just taken the trip to toyota to take advantage of their air con service offer. they never batted an eyelid when i told them the age of the vehicle, so i assumed all was ok.

alas i got a call later in the afternoon to say 'er, we've never had this before, but the connections are not the same and the mechanic says its the old illegal r12'.

in hindsight i should have specifically asked when booking if they'd do an r12 system, but never mind. at least they washed the car for nothing.

this hasn't deterred me from wanting to get my a/c and cooler box working though so i'm trying to find the best way of doing this. Should i be going down the conversion to r134a route or is it worth trying to find a specialist with the r12 substitute (RS24 google tells me)?

if anyone can point me in the direction of an air con specialist in Scotland, that would be much appreciated. a mechanic told me there was a poster 'climacool' on pistonheads who was a specialist in glasgow, but i've not been able to find that poster or company.

thanks for your help

its not a particularly special offer, just £49.99 for an air con service (clean, degas, leak test and re-gas i think). i think that's about what kwik fit charge, so i thought toyota would have a bit of a better idea of what they were dealing with.

not sure if it's a local thing or not, but i daresay you could phone your dealer and ask.

Thanks. I will mine a call
Now I am using the Aircon again, it would be nice to get rid of the smell of the Sahara

Hi,
Advanced radiators in Newcastle upon tyne charged me £160 to fit a updated system to my 91 land cruiser see websit: http://www.adrad.co.uk/

Now works perfectly even the Ice maker!!

Hope this helps

after trying a couple of places, i eventually got it fixed locally. it was vacuumed out and then r134 put in with additional lube of some sort.

the leak detector showed a seal a leak at the condenser, which was sorted with a new seal.

all working well now, so i'm quite pleased. chilled my beer on the way to the beach last weekend.
