Firstly a big thankyou to Julian for putting this list together.
Next a little about myself.
I live in Devon which is South West England. I currently own a 1997 1hdft
manual box 80 series cruiser. I have OME suspension and ARB and winch, all
in my shed waiting to be fitted.
I have owned several Land Rovers and Range Rovers but I alright now thanks
for your concern.
My first Toyota was a 1983 LHD import diesel Hilux, which I heavily modified
with ARB ,springs, wheels etc.We covered over 100k and spent 10 years
together.
This is my third 80 series and I have had a 60 as well. I nearly bought a
HZJ 73 import but it sold before I got the cash together.
Anyway 80's rule so what the hell.
If anyone is in Devon give me a call and we can meet up! Also lets get a
meet together for a days playing in the mud.
Looking forward to a wet weekend!!!

Hi,
As of now my vehicle has no serious mods. I have today gathered prices for
ARB locking diffs, winch bumper, OME shocks and springs (850's and 860's)
and stone guards for rear shocks. If any of you have fitted any of this
stuff and you have any tips please advise, it will not be long now, subject
to avail.

Hi Clive,
Welcome to the list.
Out of interest, which supplier are you going to use and which bumper are
you getting - (basically more details please, I should have found an 80 by
the end of the month and they will next on my shopping list)
Not sure about the lockers, but there is a good write up on the suspension
install at http://www.sleeoffroad.com/technical/tz_ome.htm.
If you find a good write up on the lockers, could you let me know, so that
i can add it to the list of links to go on the site.

Julian,
I am going for an ARB bumper and the supplier is either frogs island or
Devon 4x4, probably the latter as I think that their price for the package
will be the better. If we cannot find a write up on the diff install, I will
write it up when I do it.
Regards, Clive.

Clive,
If you need a real winch bumper, consider that both the ARB and TJM are
designed to take no more than 10,000lb winch (MM H12 has 12,000lb of pulling
force). I'm not sure if the ARB bumper has fittings for the hi-lift jack.

I wonder what the rating of a steel TJM T15 plus TJM winch mount kit is?
That's what I'm using and I should think it's well in excess of
12,000lb.

Maybe a dumb comment, but isn't the ultimate limit for a winch bumper what the longitudinals on the vehicle itself will take?
I can imagine that sustituting grade 8.8 (or even 10.9) bolts, or perhaps drilling out holes to take a bigger bolt size, would solve any connection problems; and the only remaining issue might be the bending moment in the bumper beam itself when spreading the load to the mounting points.
This could easily be solved by adding extra plating, although a square hollow section might be more efficient on a strength / weight basis.
Other silly question: what exactly is (or are) the 12,000 lbs you are planning to pull? That's an 80 + trailer at 90% of its total allowable weight being hauled vertically up a cliff! Maybe you could recoup the cost by selling tickets to those who want to come & watch?

Roman,
If you don't think they are suitable, what would you recommend instead? (Don't
you have a TJM?)

Clive,
Interesting. I have twice asked Froggs Island to give me prices and
availability on stuff and both times they have failed to return calls.
Also I have seen pricing for some stuff they sold someone and it was
very high (obscenely in some cases).
Here are a some starting points for you:
http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/arb.php
http://www.geocities.com/~jjjoutside/arb.html

http://www.can4x4.com/articles/airlocker.html
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/arb_locker/
http://www.off-road.com/suzuki/tech/arblock.htm
They aren't 80 or Toyota specific, but might act as a guide.

You can get an ARB/TJM and improve the mounting kit. After all the bumper is
there to protect the radiator and maybe bodywork, not to carry the load. That
costs money as the bumper isn't cheap in the UK and you have to add the cost
of parts and labour to carry out the mods. Or, you can always roll your own
mounting kit and bumper. Perhaps PWS may offer a solution, or WH Manufacturing?
As I bought the bumper secondhand and the price was right, only after bringing
it home I realised it was't quit what I was aiming at, so I had no choice and
went on with the mods. There are some pics at

your fancy.
I've pushed my winch to it's limits pulling trees (with a snatch block -
only a double pull though, not triple!), very useful tool.
And I've been stuck in bog at Tommy Breeze's so bad that 3 LR 90's tied
together couldn't resist the pull of my winch so don't underestimate the
suction of being stuck up to the floor pan in bog!
I only have a 10k OX for now but I'm sure there'll come a time when
another 2K would come in handy ...

Jon.

An 80 up to the sills in a bog, an old tree stump, what ever takes your fancy.
I can't remember exactly, but as a rule of thumb on a level surface you will need a winch
capable of pulling three times the vehicle weight when stuck up to the body in mud. If
you are then towing up a slope, then you need to increase it further.
Obviously you could double up the line with a pulley/snatch block, but you may not have
enough cable to reach the nearest tow point.
There is an excellent write up about this and all things relating to winching about 1/3rd
of the way down the page at
http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Recovery/index.html
Do a search for 'Calculating the force of a recovery operation' to find the section -
some interesting info.

For ARB:

Bending the steel tubing of that gauge may be a pain (unless you have the
right equipment. Have you, Julian?)
Notwithstanding the visual effect and the ability to wind up the PC
correct/bobble hat muppets, a straight bumper is much easier to fabricate. My
2p's worth ...

I have a row of old leylandi stumps that have been waiting for almost a
year to be pulled when I get my 80 - got to practice on something!

Hi,

Who are PWS and WHM?
I will definitely try to make my own rear bumper and tyre carriers, the prices
for them are ridiculous.
Still debating the front bumper - ARB/TJM are expensive, but they seem to do a
good job and look good. I have seen some quite good tubular bumpers on other
vehicles that look effective and reasonably easy to fabricate.
I'm just finalising the deal on my workshop so once I am in I think I need to do
some practice welds to get my confidence back before finalising what I am going
to do (I used to do a lot of welding, but haven't touched a welder for nearly 20
years).

Julian,
I mailed ARB in aus. looking for information on shocks and springs, length,
compression rate etc. I recieved a reply from frogs island, with several
pages of info. Plus pricing for stuff that I had not asked for. It seems as
if they have a few LC 80 info pages that they send out.

Think it was about 9 months from me filling in ARB info request and
Frogs Island responding .. Strangely enough I had bought from someone
else by then.
