Hi guys
I have some problem going to 2nd gear when the car is not warm
enough. Does it mean it needs to be repeared? The clock shows 225000km.

Standard with these boxes, and mine is exactly the same for the first
mile or two on cold mornings. I've done 118k miles (190k km).
I just double de-clutch until it warms up a bit.
I wouldn't worry about it unless it becomes a real problem.

Hi Chsistopher
Do you have some other major troubles with yours LC?
I just bought that one and put a lot of trust in Toyota, but there
are many things that bothered me.
the worse of all is that in Toyota the guys said that all seems OK!
But I drive with a bad feeling in my guts :-(
cheers

Since October 2001 when I bought it (with 58k miles on the clock) the
problems I've had are:
+ ABS fault (I bought it more cheaply because of that, and it turned out
to be gunk in rear sensor air gaps)
+ Faulty electrical connector in rear tailgate causing intermittent rear
wiper & courtesy lights
+ Needed new radiator at ~90k miles due to big hole in top.
+ Needed new passenger side front wheel bearing at ~90k miles
+ Needed new rear roll bar bushes at ~100k miles (trivial, and a wearing
part anyway)
I also had the starter rebuilt when I thought the contacts had worn out,
but it turned out to be due to a bad battery so I can't really hold that
against Toyota.
It has been totally trouble free and 100% reliable for the last 30
months / 25k miles.
All the problems I've had are known issues with these vehicles, and the
advice I've had from this forum and also 80scool has enabled to deal
with them without getting too paranoid!
What sort of things are you worried about? We may collectively be able
to put your mind to rest about some of them at least.
By the way have you got the 24 valve 1HD-FT engine, or the older 12
valve 1HD-T? I'd assume that a 1996 machine would probably be 24 valve.

Well it is 24 valves and that was one of the reasons I bought it-just
to avoid the big end bearings, but Julian didn't
comfort me that much about it either. So I hear some tickling -don't
know where comes from(around the engine I supposed)
but in Toyota said it was 'normal' . I changed the whole exhaust ,
some breaks and something with the inn exhaust which
made my turbo working properly. the point is I can't describe the
things in English that's what troubles me and i didn't got
the manual either...when the car goes it is quite smooth in gear, but
in free is coming some vibration and that vibration is when the LC is
idle also. I think that six cylinder engine shouldn't vibrate like
that!!!!!! even my old LC 73(87-mod.)was better at that point. And
when I shut down the engine the car shakes which I think it's not
normal either. But I was at two toyota services and they said that
this is 'NORMAL'
So the tickling is normal ,the vibration is normal i mean everything
is normal but me :-(
I had MB 300TD mod 90 never had such experience, not with my LC LJ73...
that's why I have that bad feeling in the stomach-this should be a
luxury 4X4 but I don't feel it like that

Lubo,
Chris is spot-on, its a 'feature' of the 80. But agree its a bit of a
worry when you are not used to the car.
I started to drive 80's in the office fleet and thought they were a
bit clunky but put it down to a lot of hard work in the mountains
showing-up. I then bought a 4Runner and although it had served its
time with the UN for 9 years, it was such a sweet box. I then bought
my own 80 (made an offer I couldn't refuse) and it too was bad when
cold. I then found out that the 4Runner box was derived from a car
box, and the 80 box is from a light truck - its a lot heavier
construction internally. But keep a check on your oil level and put
some additive in it to give it every chance.

I don't know what to suggest. Mine shudders briefly when I switch off,
so I wouldn't worry about that.
To be honest if it returns a reasonably good fuel economy, doesn't burn
a significant amount of engine oil and doesn't blow out too much blue or
black smoke I wouldn't worry too much about the engine. To give you an
idea mine will do at least 27 mpg (10.5l/100km) in typical "mixed" long
and short journey usage. A lot of short journeys in town will be worse,
and long motorway trips will be better - a constant 70 mph will return
29 mpg (9.8l/100km) or better. It uses less than 0.5 litres of engine
oil in 5000km unless I've been working it really hard.
When cold my engine makes all sorts of ticking, clattering, whirring,
whistling and other noises; when warm it is quieter, but it still sounds
like a truck engine - which is exactly what it is!
If you are getting vibration at idle try adjusting the idle speed very
slightly. Start off by very, very gently pressing the accelerator to see
if the vibration changes at all: you may find that at (say) 600rpm it
shudders horribly, but at 650 rpm it is fine. This means that you are
hearing "resonance", where the engine is rattling in tune with something
else in the body and magnifying the noise, in which case a small
adjustment to the idle speed screw will fix it.
If it judders over a range of revs then possibly you do have a problem,
but do the simple things first: replace the air and fuel filters, and
give it a good dose of injector cleaner. Only then move on to worrying
about injectors, timing and fuel pump - and Julian will be able to
advise you there.
As Jon says: it's really a truck engine and chassis to which Toyota have
added a turbo, ABS, air conditioning and a moderately smart body. But
it is still basically a truck: people who ride in mine are sometimes
surprised that a vehicle with such an upmarket reputation is so
agricultural in many ways.
In fact when I bought mine the salesman tried quite hard to talk me out
of it, saying that I'd like the Colorado / Prado more because it had
better road-holding, miles better gearbox, smoother engine, and so on.
All of which is true - the diesel 80 series is NOT a luxury 4x4 by the
standards of 2006. (But compare it with a Range Rover of 1996 vintage
and it looks pretty good.)

Well well guys-thank you so much for the answers! :)
Now I feel much better and begin to understand what I had as LC.
At least the engine use exactly what you pointed out and very little
blue smoke when cold
I should change the diesel filter-that's the only thing I haven't
done yet and then enjoying
the 'truck' . Now with the 'webasto' installed it is real comfort to
come inside :)))
Now the single thing to worry about looks like who's gonna stole it?
That kind of LC
was not imported in Norway at all
Cheers and thanks again for your support !!!!!
