Starting Problems

Earlier in the year when starting I would get a loud clunking maybe every third time I started her up. Some times she would clunk and still start with one turn of the key other times she would clunk and not start. She would always start by the third try though and there was no pattern as most times it would start first turn of the key. This went on for several months until the "click" of death also started happening and it wouldn't crank at all and the starter finally gave up. I then removed it and replaced the contacts and plunger which solved the click of death and she would start again. The clunking problem didn't go away and it is now getting more frequent to the point that it is regularly taking more than 3 key turns to start and consequently I'm getting less confident that it will start or the battery will drain. Again there is no pattern hot, cold or whether I start her on LPG or Petrol. She runs fine with no problems it's just when cranking I get the loud noise, and again it is not everytime.
Anybody think this is still a problem with the starter or is it something else?
cheers

Sounds like the starter to me. When it clunks does it try to start? or
is it not turning the ring gear? You could have an intermittent
contactor not connecting the batteries to 24v, only having 12v at the
starter would not turn it.

Hi Clive, Yes it clunks and tries to start and sometimes clunks and starts
or it just clunks and clunks and doesn't start and then sometimes it starts
first time with no clunks?. It just such a scary noise when it happens that
I instinctively turn the key off and then try again. My gut feeling is that
it's the starter as it wasn't in the best of shapes when i pulled it out to
replace the contacts, and had already been repaired . If I have to bite the
bullet and pay for new starter then so be it, but I need to be sure.
Anybody know where I can get one apart from Milners.
And yes it's single battery 12v Petrol

When you rebuilt it I suppose you did re-grease the piston? It sounds
as if you either have a low voltage problem, check the connections and
the voltage while trying to start, or a loose component or missing
gear tooth.
