fuel gauge sits just above 1/2

hi all just got my 80 love the old girl and is a bit of a project for me my fuel gauge sits just above 1/2 it has dropped to just above 1/4 once but gone back to where it was sitting be for where would be the best place to start looking and check cheers in advance

The windings on the level indicator tend to break with age, remove centre seats lift carpet, remove oval plate, sensor below, fuel pick up pipe below with sensor in one unit. Good idea to clean the filter and also clean any rubbish if any sitting at the bottom of the tank.
