Just chucking this out there chaps as many heads are better than one. Especially mine.
I'm running 35" or thereabouts BFG Ats. On the road I cannot fault them. Except they pick up stones worse than kids pick up worms. Having had a couple of off tar excursions recently and adding that to what I have experienced in the past, the AT is just useless in any kind of off road situation ON AN 80. Good on snow oddly, but mud and wet ground has it stumped and that's with lockers in. Do remember that my 80 is very heavily laden and probably tipping the 3t mark. I have had them on lighter vehicle and found them superb even in deep mud. But this vehicle is just too heavy for them.
I am not trying to create another off roader, I have been there, but the thought of pulling off the highway for a coffee and being stuck in the verge has me waking with night terrors. So I do not want 44" Super Kingzilla Swamper tyres.
I have re geared my diffs and I am not swapping back so we can forget that. I could put standard tyres back on at 285 or something. Right, and I could hide an entire family of refugees in my wheel arch. Have you seen my lift?
The sizes I really need are equiv to
315.70.17 = 35.12.50.17
315.75.16 = 35.12.50.16
Current choices are Cooper STT. Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ. Maxxix Bighorn MT762. Hankook Dynapro RT03. I'd go with KM2 BFG if I could but they don't come in that size in the UK because they aren't EU rated unlike the rest of the range
The load rating has to be high. I can't fit Bingking Mashers from Singapore at £63 each. They'd disintegrate. Oh you can't get the Cooper ST Maxx in this size.
I'd need a new set of wheels on there too. I do have two sets of 80 alloys knocking about but I'd prefer black so I'd go with some new rims too.
For every review that says 'These have been the best tyres I've ever had' there is one saying 'Awful, mine exploded after 1 mile' so it's really hard to say. The evidence does seem to stack up against the Cooper though. There are some people out there who get through a lot of tyres (Oz) who really hate them
I don't need a superb mud tyre, I need a superb road tyre that won't leave me in trouble every time I pull over. Yes noise is an issue and so is wear, but I can live with those if grip is there. If I hit a wet roundabout in the BFGs, it's like driving a normal car. Brilliant. I do want to be able to stop!
So any thoughts? Experiences good or bad of any of these tyres would be helpful. Yes, I know I could just be more careful where I park and stay with my current tyres. Yes, that's just the sort of help I need. Going to Morocco in Oct so would like to have some new rubber on by then. I'd keep the BFG of course just for running around on.
I'd also like to keep below a million pounds so suggesting flying to the States to pick up 5 tyres and fly back with them one at a time isn't going to happen. Yes you know who you are!
Cheers chaps.
