I brought some connections from eBay.
I'm swapping the fuse box so it will just be 'one out, one in'.
Going to add all the extra stuff to the fusebox, CB spots etc. and repair the damage done by the previous owner.
You need two small flat blade screwdrivers and and a pair of long nose pliers
Lift a tag from the fuse side which locks in the metal connection.
Some connections are across two fuses so need a second screwdriver and long nose pliers .
The doubles are fiddly but once you work it out, it's still...
Couldn't handle the cheap eBay key so got a full set of new locks from Toyota, ignition, doors fuel caps and glove box.... $480
Could have got a set from Toyota with just the ignition and doors, $300
Locksmith wanted $60 to change each fuel cap barrels to match ($120) but that would have left...
Worth pointing out that my aftermarket replacement ignition barrel and door locks have a different cheaper style key to OEM.
Now I need to carry an original key for fuel caps and another for the door/ignition.
You can't get the fuel cap barrels swapped either.....
My money pit of an early 2006 HZJ79R is trying my patience
Sprayed lubricant down the keyhole of the ignition barrel as the key release button was getting sticky.
Now I have to wobble my key to turn on the ignition.
I'm going to assume my ignition barrel was full of gunk...
Early 2006 HZJ79R
When I first twist the knob to turn on my low beam it works fine.
Occasionally when I flick the stalk forward for main beam my lights will go out for 2 or 3 seconds.
After that it usually works fine
Finally ..... the sender on the sub tank had a 'gradual dead' spot so would read different if it was on the flat, slope, going up hill etc...
Ran a wire across the main wiring sender to check the gauge.... showed full
Checked the rear sub tank sender for continuity and ohms resistance...
Bugger.... I'm falling out of love with this car... fuel gauges both went to just about empty at the same time.
If I short out the sub tank it reads full without the engine running.
Alternator voltage with the engine at a tad above tickover after starting is 13.4v and no warning lights
Seat belt has to pass around the seat, not through it.
Has a cheese wire action in a crash but check with your engineer.
Look for my footprints as you're walking down the same path I took.
If you're in Perth maybe call Custom Cab in Bassendean.
2 ways you can do it...
Weld a plate to the top with captive nuts, easier than the way I did it.
Seat belt bolt holes are 165mm apart on centers.
I removed the fuel tank etc, drilled spot welds, cut the box section, insert a 'golden' ADR approved seat belt bolt retaining plate and knocked up...
Given that there is an intermittent fault I'm thinking it's a poor connectiosome some where. Next time I have a free weekend I will pull out the seats and take a look at the main tank.
Back of the gauge cluster is a printed circuit on a plastic backing.
I spoke too soon..... I have 2 gauges on the left side.
Both tanks are full at the moment but the gauge for the main slowly dropped so low it looked more like a broken wire.... then I turned off the sub tank button to feed from the main tank and it creeped back to where I would expect it to be...
Charge rate is 14.2 but I couldn't unplug the alternator without fear of breaking it.
Guess it's one of those 'once you know it's easy' things.
However think I might have fixed it.
Cleaned all the connections, including behind the dash, with 'Electronic Circuit Board Cleaner' and an ear bud...
Both gauges move slowly. When I move the sub tank sender to the full position it slowly reads full. Disconnect the wire and it reads empty. If I put a wire across the sender gauge side, (unplugged) it reads full.
HZJ79.... fuel gauges are all over the place. Main is full but gauge moves between full, half then back to full. Sub says just above empty but it's at least half. I have removed the sub sender and it reads full when it's out of the tank...... Are the two gauges on the same circuit? Is there a...
Good morning beautiful people
Digging around my 2005 HZJ79R I'm finding several spare electrical connections.
One large connector but with only 4 wire in the drivers footwell by the fusebox
Several behind the dash underneath the heater control
In the engine bay near the fuel filters...
Looking to fit switches for driving lights and diff locker into standard spots in my 2005 HZJ79
Also keen to find a dual battery volt meter display that will fit a standard place on the dash.
It's pretty sparse at the moment and only has the button for the sub tank
Any links and...
Had a look at the Huracan seat conversion for my 79 series.
Didn't like the passenger side because it left the rail behind and the seat belt arrangement was IMO dangerous.
Looking to add a bolting point for a seat belt in a better location
Reflection of the drivers side would be ideal
