    Rear axle question

Hi all - hoping your collective wisdom can help. I want to replace the rear axle case (close to rotting through and all over in nasty condition). It's an axle with rear differential lock, so I know that I need an axle case that's the same. My 90 does not have ABS but the only new rear axle...

    Hub nut

Hi. Is it possible to overtighten the front hub nut and cause any damage (e.g. to the bearings or the dustshield on the outboard end of the CV)? I recently changed both complete driveshafts. I nipped up the hub nuts with a massive breaker bar (which is what it took to get them undone). On the...

    Wheel bearings

Hi all, Just a quick question - are the front wheel bearings adjustable? I'm sure I've read the answer is 'no', but I can't find where. Dave

First time for everything: snapped anti-roll bar

Snapped the rear ARB like a twig of celery last weekend laning in Northumberland! I've removed it and - predictably - all four bolts holding the brackets in place sheared off (despite heat and lube). Will it fail an MOT if I leave it off? (My MOT guys are pretty sympathetic) Also, for anyone...

    Power output - 140bhp?

I'd always understood the standard power of a UK-market Colorado with a 1KZ-TE was 123bhp However I just looked up my car out of curiosity on a VIN decoder site: https://en.vindecoder.pl/ It tells me that my 1997 car has 140bhp I could believe this to be true as it has always felt fast for...

    Toyota red coolant, mixing ratio?

Hi all, I've only ever used the ready-mixed Toyota coolant before, but I can't find any going cheap. Does anyone know the mixing ratio offhand for the concentrate version? Is it 1:1? I.e. will 5l of concentrate give me 10l of antifreeze? Does it have to be distilled water that you mix with?

Just a little lower ball joint reminder for everyone...!

Today my lower ball joint separated on a lane in the North York Moors, about 1km from tarmac. I had mine done a couple of years ago so I thought I was safe, but the truck gets a lot of green lane punishment Check 'em, change 'em and don't ignore steering-related groaning noises! I got out...

    Toyota bronze sticker

I got my Toyota bronze sticker recently... Not long till the cruiser qualifies for the silver one as well (200,000 miles). I bet there's a fair few cars out there that will qualify for gold (300,000)

    Laning in Wales/Herefordshire/Shropshire

So we spent last weekend laning on the Welsh border. I can't believe how many great, interesting, challenging and downright beautiful lanes there are in that area

    Rear difflock actuator

Right! I've decided to tackle this finally after getting stuck for the first time greenlaning (easy pull out from my friend, but I'll never hear the last of it). I've got my new actuator (good second hand) and I'm just putting the last coat of paint on it (white radiator paint over two coats of...

Nice snowy and icy day out on Rudland Rigg

Xmas laning trip - we took in a few lanes around the area, but caught some nice snaps on Rudland Rigg. On a day when the rest of the country (so it seems) was covered in snow, we only got a few flakes.

Cheap snorkel pictures and cutting template (product ST090KZA)

Well (following a discussion elsewhere on the forum) I pressed the button and am now the proud owner of a £69-95 Ebay special snorkel It was UK stock and arrived within a day of ordering. The box was labelled SNK-170759. At first I thought that the manufacturer has simply ripped off the...

Do you recognise this alloy wheel pattern?

My Colorado came with what I thought was a standard pattern alloy wheel, which I immediately replaced with some black steel wheels and they've been gathering dust and bird poo ever since in the back garden so I want rid of them Since then, I've noticed that my wheels are different from every...

Whine (the car, not me). Do I need new wheel bearings?

I hadn't really noticed it because I'm used to the mud tyre noise, but now it's been pointed out by others I think that the car is more whiney than usual. (It's variable with speed and doesn't change if you drop the clutch and freewheel.) I think it might just be the tyres getting older but...

Laning in God's Own Country (photos)

We were back 'home' in Yorkshire at the weekend for a day exploring the green roads around the River Esk in the northeast part of the North York Moors, in the Grosmont, Glaizedale, Egton area. Blessed with Indian summer conditions, we spent the day fording the River Esk and its tributaries and...

CB radio installation... and aerial mounting

So, I had a weekend free last weekend and the weather was ok so I carried out some jobs. I fixed my intermittent reverse light (new gearbox switch for £9-99 from Ebay), engine oil and filter (4500 miles since the last one... I left it a bit long!) and a new fuel filter. BUT the most...

    A new toy...

I took delivery of a very exciting parcel today... Can you tell what it is? That's a big 10-4 breakers! Er, yes, it's a CB. Specifically (top left to bottom right) a quick release bayonet fitting to allow me to remove the aerial from the roof with ease when not in use or when doing tight...

Powys laning: Lower Claerwen and others (photos)

We went off to mid-Wales last weekend to do some of the many classic lanes, amongst them Lower Claerwen. You may recognise the dam as it's the one that Richard Hammond winched himself up in a Series 1 LR in the last series of Top Gear. Just looking up at the dam made me giddy. As it happens...

North Wales laning: Wayfarer and others (photos)

Last weekend we took a trip to the land of mist, dragons, and beautiful scenery (and poor-quality restaurant food). The Wayfarer is thought of as one of the best lanes in the UK. It's not technical at all, but the landscape is special in a way that you can't quite put your finger on. There is...

    Odd idle problem

My 1KZ-TE with 182,000m idles fine in normal circumstances (although it can vary between 750 and 850rpm (always steady) depending on how hot/cold it is, which I don't see as a problem). From time-to-time, only when in slow-moving traffic after a longish (1hr+) journey, the idle drops right down...

Laning on Salisbury Plain - photos

Last month my fiancee and I met up with some old hands for a guided tour of Salisbury Plain or as ex-army types know it, Salisbury Plain Training Area. That's because although there is a mass of really good unsurfaced byways and unclassified road, you have to share it with the army. That's...

    Milner CV shaft woes

I apologize for just having a whinge, but I think brand new CV joints should last more than 6 months! I had my garage fit two complete CV shafts bought from Milners (as a precaution before a long trip and because both inner CV boots needed replacing on my Toyota originals) 2 months after...

    Ramsden Lane, West Yorks, photos

Took a cheeky Sunday afternoon trip here. Great byway with some slight rocky steps and axle-twisters but straightforward for a solo vehicle with decent clearance. Great views over the valley and the chance to pose with some articulation and popping the odd (slight) front wheelie. Recommended...

    Colorado in deep... Yorkshire Wolds

A handful of pictures from last weekend's laning trip in the Yorkshire Wolds. Deep ruts that were bone-dry and rock solid. Our mates in a Ford Ranger needed dragging over some of the deeper ones. Beautiful part of the world, but a very different experience when it's wet! (Several of the lanes...

Yorkshire Dales in my Landcruiser 90

A handful of photos from last weekend's laning in the Dales (quite a gentle trip, especially now Cam Steps have been filled in). My 90 now has 181000 miles on it and feels pretty much solid. It's mostly on its original bushes and nothing major has gone wrong (although the front diff has had...

+2" Monroe rear shock absorbers part number

I recently fitted these to my 2" lifted KZJ90. I've always been pleased with Monroe shocks in the past - nothing fancy, but decent kit at decent price. The part number for the +2" version is D8433 (confirmed by the sticker on my shocks and the label on the box). I think the standard length...
