    Non-starter...

I think the power steering failure is most likely electrical but will test today.

    Non-starter...

OK, thanks for all the responses. Well, the primer did the trick - only to find I have no power steering . I'll look into a non-return valve, but I need my ACSD here in Sweden!

Thanks guys - I didn't know there was a primer as I've never needed it until now. Will let you know tomorrow!

    Non-starter...

Hi all, been a long time since I've been on here! So... after getting it running just how I wanted it, work suddenly picked up and my truck has been standing for increasingly long periods of time. I first noticed a problem when after a couple of weeks standing, I went to fire it up and heard...

    LED headlamp bulbs

I hate to be a party pooper, but yes it does matter. The tester should be looking for any bright or 'white' light appearing in a zone above the horizontal plane and to the offside. The outer edge of a beam from a filament bulb is relatively dim (yellow), and so with the beams directed down and...

Thanks for the input folks - I'll see if any of that leads to a cure!

    Unbearable engine squeal... advice please!

Ever since I bought my most recent 80, approaching 3 years back, I've been plagued by what most would conclude must be fan belt squeal. The noise didn't worry me when I bought it, and I took the truck straight to Overland Cruisers for a midlife service, which included all new genuine belts...

    LED headlamp bulbs

Well, I certainly agree you get what you pay for! Wish I'd tried the Phillips before I splashed £350 on aftermarket headlights
  11. GuyB

    LED headlamp bulbs

Wouldn't you say it's both? Surely the brightness dictates how the beam must be directed... Headlights designed for filament bulbs permit quite a lot of the 'peripheral' beam to be directed at oncoming traffic. Put an LED or HID bulb in them and you'll be dazzling people. Whereas, headlights...

    LED headlamp bulbs

Back to the MOT question... it takes some time for the regs to catch up with the tech, so IMHO it's only a matter of time before LEDs are subject to the same controls as HID. They both emit a much brighter and more intense light and therefore need different lenses from regular filament bulbs...

Diff lock actuator refurb... advice and parts needed!

Hi all, I replaced both front and rear actuators about 18 months ago with genuine units. To be more accurate, I went to a local mechanic and handed him copies of the relevant pages of the Service Manual. Both worked to begin with, but I noticed about 6 months ago, the front wasn't engaging...

    Set of Suplex springs, anyone?

Hi all, I'm replacing my knackered Pedders shocks with EFS Elites and decided to pair them with a corresponding set of springs. The outgoing springs are Suplex (2in lift, from Roughtrax), for no other reason than I had a shipment coming from there, and I needed something in a hurry! In the...

    Winch Bar 80 Series

I have a spare new one... one of two I imported from China, from a decent manufacturer. The other is on my truck and had endured all manner of abuse, including lots of thick brush and heavy winching over the last 2 years and it's stood the test very well. It's 3mm powder-coated steel, nicely...

    Weatherstrip replacement

Hi Dervis - it's a quick, easy job. No need to remove door cards or glass, for sure. I vaguely remember having to unbolt the wing-mirrors from the inside (in which case have silicone on hand to re-seal after) but I was doing a couple of other things at the same time, so not certain if it was...

    Ouch! How serious...?

No plans to make it a regular thing - I like getting out on trails, but the whole rock and tree stump thing..? Meah, not for me. :relaxed:
  20. GuyB

And there goes another pedders shock... best place to buy a new kit?

Yes , that rings true, Clive - the truck I drove with OME has had plenty of abuse and miles, also fitted over 10 years ago, and felt completely solid. I wonder if the newer kits are as good as the old, given today's commercial pressure to outsource everything.
  21. GuyB

And there goes another pedders shock... best place to buy a new kit?

Indeed - I wouldn't have had a bad word to say about Pedders for road use, even IOM roads! And others have put them through worse with no issue. Maybe a bad batch, maybe they switched suppliers. There's a company in China called Unity4x4 that seems to have a tie-up with Pedders since last...

And there goes another pedders shock... best place to buy a new kit?

Thanks, Grant and Chris! Really interesting, re the slinky springs - I had wondered how the softer end of the progression would fare under load!

Yes, skid plates are on the shopping list!

Anyone fitted stiffer anti-roll / sway bars?

Oh and if like me, you need a 'somewhat' sensible 2nd car for day to day use, but occasionally load up with family and kit and hit the trails, then airbags are a good shout too!
  25. GuyB

Anyone fitted stiffer anti-roll / sway bars?

So I would conclude, as is often the case, there's no single right answer. Clearly, you have to be careful about doing these mods in isolation, and a bit of joined-up thinking will spare you expensive surprises. I've recently driven an 80 with an OME Kit 50mm lift kit. The ride was a little...

And there goes another pedders shock... best place to buy a new kit?

To be fair, it was never supposed to be a permanent solution. I needed a lift kit in short order, and Pedders were both helpful and had available stock. I went for their foam cell, heavy duty shocks (not the entry level kit Milner used to sell) with 50mm lift springs. Bout the same money as the...

Thanks Clive - yes I do have a 3 inch lift. Would have needed several more to come out of that unscathed:-)
  29. GuyB

    Ouch! How serious...?

Hi all, Went to a 4x4 meet nearby expecting a friendly knock-about on woodland trails. Turned out it was a bit more serious, and a very technical course. In spite of being the only entrant with smaller than 37 inch wheels (I run 33s), no 3-point harness or a roll cage, I actually did ok (much...

    Keyless entry options?

Update 2... got it working by wiring the dome light supervision relay to the passenger door switch instead of the driver's. Annoying workaround but it works. Obviously the failsafe that prevents you from locking your keys in the car is triggered by the driver's door switch, and I couldn't work...

Anyone fitted stiffer anti-roll / sway bars?

Thanks all - some food for thought. I'm OK with a bit of roll, but there's something not right about the way mine handles since I fitted a 2.5 inch lift (Pedders). Having killed 2 of the shocks, leaping over sand dunes, I'm minded to change the whole set-up. What is with these links BTW?

Anyone fitted stiffer anti-roll / sway bars?

Hi all, Handling is a bit sloppy since I've been carrying a roof tent around - thinking about a Whiteline aftermarket sway bar or two. Has anyone done this? I note there's a 'Heavy Duty' or 'Extra Heavy Duty' option, and very little price difference between the two. To my mind, the less body...

    Keyless entry options?

Update... the problem appears to be the dome light supervision. I had it connected to the driver's door switch, which seemed like an easy solution, but the system doesn't like it. Well at least I can lock and unlock the doors now - but I'm dead set on getting the dome light relay working!
  37. GuyB

    Keyless entry options?

Well, I'm stumped. I opted for a Viper kit (around £80) because it has lots of nice features I like an inbuilt dome light supervision relay, lock/unlock with ignition, and a couple of programmable auxiliaries for things like open/close windows or honk the horn when I forget where I parked:-) -...

    Keyless entry options?

Good shout Dave, thats an investment of time you needed to make anyway, before fitting a keyless kit... one thing being unable to lock, quite another if your fob fails with you locked out, and not to have the back-up of the key! Don’t be put off by all the wires - most of them aren’t used...

    Turbo replacement

I just checked the prices and unless G-Turbo has increased the price in the last year, the equivalent (Grunter) ticket price is on par with wink... BUT, you have to factor in that they want your old turbo in exchange, so 2 lots of shipping that will set you back another hundred quid or so.

By way of an update - I went to visit Wink.4x4 in Leek, the Netherlands. I was taking the truck to Sweden via the Harwich Hook of Holland route, and they're kind of on the way. I must say, I'm seriously impressed with these guys. They're designers, engineers, and Land Cruiser fanatics. They...

    Keyless entry options?

I spent several hours at the weekend on this subject (separate post on that as I'm trying to do more than just unlock) and it's a bit tricky. On my last 80 I fitted a £20 kit from ebay. No actuators, just a negative signal to the appropriate wire in the door control loom and it worked a treat...

I was trying to decide between Wink 4x4 and G-Turbo... Both have excellent reviews and similar performance. In the end I went dot Wink due to locality and I’m glad I did as I needed lots of help getting boost/fuel settings right, and they were very responsive and helpful. The performance is...

80 series alarm Keyless Entry Help

Bloomin 'eck! Are you a prison guard, Clive? I had a factory alarm but no fobs. So...

Apologies if this isn't the appropriate place to ask this

A couple of things to add: If you don't need 3rd row seats and factory lockers (which probably won't work anyway) keep an eye out for a jap import - they come up often and don't usually have the rust issue. There are several forums and Facebook groups specialising in landcruisers - there are...

    Which Boost Controller?

Thought I'd try the eBay cheapie first at a tenner. Waste of time, didn't control boost - was all over the place. Upgraded to a midrange model, also eBay but this one about £40. Worked fine with a stock turbo when I just wanted to increase from 0.8 to 1.0 bar, but now I've fitted a Wink 4x4...
