Right so it turned out to be a scam - seller has stopped communicating with me after I asked for the VIN, ad removed and won’t answer phone or text. No idea why people bother doing that kind of thing. Thanks for Grimbo for your input - I learnt something about Diesel engine pumps at least!
Thanks for the replies already! So it’s the middle bench seat I was after - although I guess the third row would work - it would make the load space less usable. So the front seats are grey fabric (see pic). I don’t have the trim code yet but have asked for this info.
Can’t believe I’m looking at another land cruiser but anyway……a 1993 HDJ80 with a missing back seat. Looks like a nice one but I need at least 4 belted seats so what are the options for a replacement? My guesses below, but if anyone knows I’d love to hear what’s possible:
-OEM: seems unlikely to...
Thanks Grimbo! That’s a great explanation and makes sense. If it is that then I’m not too concerned- I think a new solenoid runs to around 100 euros but do you know how difficult is it to replace? Hopefully I’ll get to see it in a couple of days time.
So I have a possibility of buying a 1987 LJ70 with an engine fault. After 30 minutes of running it cuts out. When cold water is poured over the diesel pump it will start again.
Any ideas on what the fault might be and how much it might cost in parts (approx) would be greatly appreciated so I can...
Hi Rodger,
No problem - I am even slower than you and have made almost no progress with anything since last posting! I am still undecided. I do like trying to keep things stock as much as possible but it would be nice with greater stopping power. Using 60 series could be a good compromise. I’ll...
Many thanks! I don’t really like the idea of it so will cut and block both ends off. Check fluid levels and then replace with factory setup once I get hold of the plugs.
cheers
So I wanted to check that the transmission and transfer boxes had enough oil in them but found both filler caps were joined together with some hosing. I’ve never seen that before (limited experience!) nor is it shown that way in Haynes. I assume the hose allows fluid from the two boxes to mix...
My troopy has finally got new rims and tyres. It has passed its roadworthy test with no problems so is clear for another 2 years (hooray!). I have already gone through the rear hubs and changed brake cylinders, pads and tidied the rear springs up. But I have yet to change the bushings. It seems...
Aghh! Just working out some other parts to order with my rims from megastore4x4 and the rims are now €46 higher for each one! They were already quite expensive now they are ridiculous. I think I'll have to keep what I have or work something else out.....
Thanks for the offer Tony but I’m set on some solid steel rims grey paint that hopefully look fairly original.
I also finally got round to measuring the offset on my existing rims at -17mm. So following paddlered’s advice I guess the -10 rims at megastore4x4 is the closest to the existing set...
Nice rig! I really like the pick up versions of the 40 series. I once drive an old fj45 in Namibia fitted with a game viewing platform called Bessie. Looking forward to seeing how your restoration proceeds!
So do you think they are original Toyota rims? Although the vehicle is from 1982 not 1988 The cut outs are not how I’ve seen them on other vehicles - triangular but sloped, see the picture below
the spare is like I’ve seen on other spiked rims.
I attempted to check over the rear brakes on my fj45 - first drum is stuck fast and no amount of hammering or wd40 seems to make it budge. No movement at all though the pads are retracted I think - spins fine. I guess this will be a longer job!
Looking great - it really is. I guess the parts will be put to good use but it was kind of painful watching the FJ troopy getting dismantled...I'm a lucky owner of one myself so didn't mind the camera falling over. Must have been an awesome drive out there and back.
A little progress on working out the right rim - megastore4x4 day that the 0 or -10 offset is purely aesthetic, though I am not sure myself. They asked me to give me info on the offset of my current rims but the info stamped on them is not very clear as to what the offset is. Can anyone work it...
Hi Ed, so Megastore4x4.pt have some 16" x J6 rims with either 0 or -10 offset - do you think the -10 would work? What is the reason for a negative offset anyway? Is it for clearing the brakes or something else? thanks
Seems more complicated story that I imagined - 4 companies do have access to the tooling:
https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.autoblog.com/amp/2019/04/24/land-serwis-series-i-defender-original-tooling-land-rover/
I’m surprised how difficult it is to get 16x6 rims then. I will try my local Toyota spares department tomorrow. I found a couple of Toyota sites that appear to have oem rims for delivery from UAE or Japan to the US which doesn’t really help but at least they do seem to exist. I’d like to hear...
So it could indeed be a vanity project but what puzzles me is why the tooling wasn’t made available? What else were/are they going to do with it? Scrap metal prices aren’t that high are they? Do they benefit financially from a limited stock of defenders on the road that need spares made with the...
I wonder if these would fit a 40 series - seem to be the right dimensions - 16 x 7, with 6 bolt holes and bolt circle diameter of 139.7. The offset is 35. They don't specify whether this is negative or positive so I am not sure if that is correct. Also doesn't say if they are J rims or not also...
Non LC vehicles are not off limits in the lounge I assume - anyway if I had 30k lying around the Grenadier looks great. I like that functionality seems to be a high priority

Anyone else?
Thanks! - yes they do look good - so am I mistaken to think that 16" wheels are original? I tried using Toyodiy for my vehicle and it seems there is a mix of 15" and 16" tires but it's hard to decipher which part is the actual rim:

Mystery Road on iPlayer has loads of Land Cruisers- various series and the crime scene at the beginning is FJ45 ute

They look quite similar to what I have already - but with a different shaped spoke cut out in the rims. I don't want split rims and really wanted something like this*:
*EDIT: granted these are probably split rims!
I'm thinking of changing the rims and tyres on my FJ45 troopy to something more original/more aesthetic. It currently has some white 15 inch rims with Cooper AT 31x10.5 R15LT tyres that I have the invoice for from 1999 and so I am not that convinced they are particularly safe anymore. The rims...
Thanks Rodger - it seems I did have that one in the version of Haynes I have. It set me off in the right direction and with the help of another forum at ih8mud I found my solution!
