A test match special eh? The way we're going at the moment there will be no mention of test matches here! I had to look up how Pioneer manage a three way in one driver ... neat! Good point about clearance. I'm not sure yet. I did have a preliminary look when I had the panels off the doors to...

    Speakers.

Interesting. I've got an Alpine head unit in mine and I'm going for a pair of 6.5" Alpine mid range speakers in the door with their tweeters dash mounted in pods designed for gauges. If you go for mids with inbuilt tweeters [co-axials as an example] at knee level or below you lose much of the...

1970 Front Brakes - Dual-Twin or just Twin??

Wow, don't try googling leading/trailing shoes, there's a lot of complete misunderstanding out there! This is pretty good to illustrate both types, though it's not a twin leading as illustrated in the diags above. The "expander" cylinder in the diag below has two pistons: leading v trailing...

1970 Front Brakes - Dual-Twin or just Twin??

Looking at diag 10.9 it appears that it's a standard twin leading shoe with the piston [part 11 in diag 1, bottom right of page 174] only acting on one end of the shoe with the other end being a conventional adjuster. I reckon the cylinders only have one piston each, though anyone who's pulled...

Still retrospective with this one but nearly up to date ... 1970 Front Brakes - Dual-Twin or just Twin??

... but if both of the cylinders have two pistons it would seem to do away with the need for an adjuster, so what are the adjuster rings for? Jules

    Rethinking a 2014 VDJ79

Next up, and this is still retrospective, I attacked the wheels and suspension. The narrow rear track troubled me for various reasons, so I fitted 50mm spacers to each rear wheel. High quality steel items and I used loctite to attach the spacer to the hub. It proved a point and the highway...

    Sad day, Don't hate me

Not sure if you're talking about John Deere but I was pleased to see that in the US they've backed off a little from their policy of not allowing farmers to fix their own machinery. I understand it was in anticipation of EU law changes in favour of giving the owners of many different types of...

    Rethinking a 2014 VDJ79

This is retrospective but the first mod I've done was to buy and install a stage 4 Carbuilders 4X4 dual cab sound proofing pack: Carbuilders soundproofing At nearly $1,000 it seems costly but it's been worth every cent. The link above has an excellent Youtube instructional clip on how to go...

    Rethinking a 2014 VDJ79

There are a hell of a lot of LCs of all types still running around here. I admit I hadn't really noticed until I bought one, just how many and how varied they are and yes, there's a great choice of aftermarket parts as a result. Jules

    Rethinking a 2014 VDJ79

Hi everyone! I bought this car late last year and I've been meaning to start documenting the various changes starting from here: As you can see it was on standard wheels, with the narrow rear wheel-base. There's 3" of lift with parabolic springs on the rear and Formula 4X4 dampers all...

1970 Front Brakes - Dual-Twin or just Twin??

Sorry, I'm not understanding your terminology there. Twin leading has a pair of pistons, one in each cylinder, with each the leading edge of each shoe adjacent to the piston. They're often used on front drums. The common alternative is a single cylinder with two pistons, one driving the...

    Sad day, Don't hate me

I've moved from a Porsche MacanS to my 79 series LC. Much as the Porsche was incredibly comfortable and quick to drive, the cost of parts and potential repairs in an accident is horrific. On top of that I'm sick of the modern trend towards manufacturers controlling their product through computer...

    GRJ76K GVM and Towing Specs

In Australia you'd need to get an engineers report to have a plate fitted and you'd have to have the plate present for the spot checks that are part of our road using "experience" here. Can you get anything out of Kaymar that might identify the bar and give some sort of guidance for it to be...

    Bump stop issue

In relation to the 2" lift and changes to caster, I've just had the wheels aligned and the caster for both front wheels is around the 2 degree mark. The specified limits are 3 degrees 20 minutes to 5 degrees 20 minutes, so there's quite a difference. According to the recommended alignment specs...

    Bump stop issue

Thanks, wheel alignment is fairly badly out and the wheel bearings needed adjustment but I haven't found any serious issues and the oil changes were frequent, which is always good to know. I discovered breather tubes fitted to the diffs and gearbox ... some rather casual fixing of parts with...

    Bump stop issue

Spring rotated, problem sorted, thanks for the answers. I can't see how anyone could have put it together so carelessly but there's signs of a few things having been done like that on my car ... good ideas and parts, poorly implemented. I'm contemplating caster correction. At 2" of lift...

    Bump stop issue

Latest theory. In the pic below you can see that the bottom land for the spring is shaped so that the end of the spring has a particular place to sit: It looks to me as though the spring should be rotated about 180 degrees so that the end of the spring sits in that stepped depression on the...

    Bump stop issue

Thanks Shayne. The radius arms at the point where they connect to the bushes pretty much shroud them, so it's not easy to judge if they're off-set or not. I managed to contact the previous owner to ask him a few questions and he reckons he's fitted caster correction bushes plus the lift is 2"...

Camber/Castor adjustment on an 80 Series

I'm digging up an old thread here but I've got much the same problem with my 79 series twin cab. Front right wheel has too much +ve camber. I haven't measured it yet but it's noticeably more +ve than the left side. Wear on the outside of the tyre is also significant. I've never been a fan of...

    Bump stop issue

Thanks for the suggestions Shayne. Could you recommend a source for a workshop manual? I think I'll have to settle for digital but some sites can be a bit dodgy for manuals and I want a genuine version. Jules

    Bump stop issue

I have no idea and I can't find out from the former owner. I've got an alignment booked in so that might bring some clarity. There's no oddities in the handling.

    Bump stop issue

I've been wondering about that. The Panhard rods appears to be the original ones so yhey could be an issue. The other side spring/bump stop is fine though, being centered. There might be an overall suspension misalignment problem. The tyre on the LHS looks to be f eathering slightly on the outer...

    Bump stop issue

Hmm, looking at the pic, it seems as though the whole bump stop assembly might be positioned too far outwards at the top mount and could actually be straight. Is that possible? How is the top of the bump stop located in the top mount for the spring? Is it possible it just hasn't been settled...

    Bump stop issue

My 79 twin cab has been raised, 3" [I was told by the previous owner though I'd like to check that measurement]. Aside from that I've noticed that on the RH side the bump stop cone, inside the spring, is slightly misaligned and at max compression comes into contact with the spring and...

    Grease nipples?

Thanks, I certainly didn't pump until there was grease oozing out around the shaft, so I'll monitor it and limit myself to a couple of strokes next time Jules

    Grease nipples?

Thanks everyone. One way or another, this sounds like a good idea. Maybe a chalk mark on the tyre, rotate the right number of degrees? I'm now slightly paranoid about the possibility that I pumped too much grease into the slip joints, though I haven't noticed any strange behaviour from the...

    Grease nipples?

This is horribly basic but I haven't had much to do with greasing universal joints in quite the same configuration as I've got on my 79 series twin cab tail shafts. The grease nipples are exactly where you'd expect them to be but I find it's really tricky to get the joints into such a position...

Anyone fitted stiffer anti-roll / sway bars?

There's definitely scope to tune any suspension for specific situations or even driver preference. Most car manufacturers set up suspension for understeer on the basis that it's safer in a loss of traction incident, if the front wheels lose grip under braking and the car ploughs off the road...
  37. A

Anyone fitted stiffer anti-roll / sway bars?

On the plus side, a heavier roll bar on the front will reduce roll but it will also increase understeer and decrease articulation. A heavier roll bar on the rear will also reduce roll and it should decrease understeer. Again, the disadvantage will be decreased articulation and more of a tendency...
  38. A

Anyone fitted stiffer anti-roll / sway bars?

Yes, the lever arm is very long so even with a 30mm bar it's not as stiff as it might look to be, if that makes sense.
  39. A

Anyone fitted stiffer anti-roll / sway bars?

I'm a new owner/member here but my initial impression of the handling of the 79 series is ... considerable understeer, and although the loss of articulation is a minus I'm thinking that a Whiteline rear, 30mm, sway bar might make cornering slightly more balanced.
