Car SOS - doing a Landcruiser

Just a shame Fuzz made a song and dance about using grease in the front knuckles being a 'cheat', if he had checked the manuals the production team were offered he would have been able to do the job properly. All the 40s we have seen here have had steel bodies so the GRP version is a rare...

Suspension advice please for overland trip to China

Always worth looking at these in context. It looks like the shocks have over heated, probably because the springs weren't man enough for the load resulting in excessive stain on the bush. Do you have more details on the spec of the truck and suspension setup?

Thanks Jon, will report back on how we get on.

Strata Florida this Saturday - anyone been recently.

Hi Shayne, To be honest you will be better off going with other members of the club who may be taking in a selection of lanes. Our focus for Saturday is supporting the guys on the motor bikes and a bit of light entertainment for the children so I'm wary about escorting others down the track -...

Hi Jon, Do you have a grid reference for that part. Looking at my MM, the last time I went was with you on an ELCO weekend back in 2009!! Thanks.

    Rubber Floor Mats

Thanks guys. Jonnyboy, don't suppose you have a Disco 2 or P38 around to measure the approximate width? Actually is a P38 a 'classic rr'? One of my mechanics has one (can't afford an LC yet :icon-wink:) here.

    Rubber Floor Mats

Thanks guys, shame there aren't any that provide a single full width mat for the 2nd row.

    Rubber Floor Mats

Hi All, Anyone come across some decent rubber floor mats for an 80? I've survived for years without, but having skipped out the old girl for the Adventure Overland show I would like to try to keep her a bit cleaner over the winter. I know you can get some nice fitted ones from firms in Aus...

Strata Florida this Saturday - anyone been recently.

Rob, would a stock Defender or 110 get through? I assume so. Shayne, unless things have changed big time I doubt a winch will be required although I recall it can get quite wet so perhaps a snorkel would help. Need to see what the others have planned at the moment.

Strata Florida this Saturday - anyone been recently.

Morning All, A friend is trying to persuade me to provide support for a bunch of friends heading out to Strata Florida on their motorbikes this Saturday. I get the impression they will be running it a few times so I'll just end up pottering up and down it. I've not been down it for a few...

    Dual tank switchover

Andy, Assuming it is a straight 100 series the switch should also switch over the fuel gauge and will give you a 'SUB' light on the dash to indicate it is reading from the sub tank. Just be aware it can take a few moments to change. I can't remember if the low level light will also work or...

    Overlander Show

The key with the Overlander shows is that it isn't just about going to buy shiny things, it's more about going to get ideas as well as meet like minded travellers to chat about your travels. You will get so much more out of it if you go up for the full weekend, look around the stands, go to...

Fan belt change - Milner strikes again?

I wouldn't waste time with cheaper belts, just bite the bullet and buy the matched set from Toyota they are well worth the extra money. On a few occasions we have looked at 3rd party suppliers, but always struggle to match the lengths - typically from a batch of 20 Milner one's a couple of...

Kevin, The safest thing is to just do them, it's cheap insurance particularly if you don't have detailed knowledge of the service history, oils used, etc.

    Front axle seals & birfs

Just to add to this based on the axles we have done over the last few years and chats with Christo Slee over in the US.... The HDK CVs from Milners seem fine for general day to day driving and overlanding, they struggle when playing on off road sites when the axles are locked up and there are...

    HubbUK 30th May

The HUBB started as a forum for motorbike travellers, but has expanded to cover trucks, 4x4s - basically any overlanding vehicles. Most customers planning their own LC trips from basic forrays in to Morocco or longer round Africa or Asia trips find the HUBB a great resource. I've never...

Andrew St. Pierre WHite's ITSALONGWAY Trip in jeopardy

Hi, I don't know if you are aware, but Andrew St. Pierre White the 4x4 film maker from South Africa is organising a trip from Cape Town to John O'Groats this year with his Brother in law Tom as the source of a new TV series as well as to raise funds and awareness for the Save the Rhino...

I have a stand there so if anyone from here does go, do drop in to say hello. I've never been to the event before, but the impression from people from past events is that it is worth going for as many of the days as you can - there is a fair amount to see and a lot of people to chin wag with...

    Auto gearbox knocking

It is unlikely the problem will be in the gearbox, more likely the drive line. Check the universal joints in the prop shafts as well as check for play in the drive flanges on the front hubs.

    Rear Brake lights stuck on?

Is it the brake lights or side lights that are stuck on? Do you have a tow bar and associated electrics? - most odd electrical problems with lights we usually find we can trace back to the tow bar electrics.

Smoke Problem in land cruiser 2005 UK Model

OK, sounds as if you are suffering from the injector seat problem and a possibly in for a bit of a big bill. First thing to do is to drop the sump and check the oil pickup - the chances are that it will be caked in burnt oil sludge. Assuming it is, the chances are that the head gasket is...

    trying to contact Julian V...

Yes, sorry guys. After a steady spring the summer has just gone crazy. We have up to 15 trucks outside waiting to be worked on and a stream of customers here from dawn to dusk working on their vehicles and with only two of us in the workshop at the moment we struggle to get to the phone. The...

    Expedition 80 Series Build

Yes, I would pull them off and mark the two halves and then split them and thoroughly clean out the slip joint - might as well fix the pinion seal whilst at it. As have said, we have found that with shorter pipe runs on the front axles you can get a small amount of diff oil in the air box...

    Expedition 80 Series Build

One of the first 80s I ever worked on was up on axle stands outside my house for nearly four weeks and the axles were the last thing we did - when we popped the breather off there was a distinct sucking noise that lasted a couple of seconds so that axle had held that negative pressure for four...

    Expedition 80 Series Build

OK, see what you are saying, however ;-) With the one way valve arrangement on the factory breather and the expulsion of air when hot you cannot avoid negative pressure in the axles or gearboxes as they cool. I've looked briefly at the maths and from winter cold (5 degrees) to running hot...

    Expedition 80 Series Build

I could get all technical and measure it, but I am pretty certain that the negative pressure that builds up in a standard axle with the standard breather is much higher than what you would get in the air box - when you pop the breather hose off you get quite a loud hissing noise that takes a few...

    Expedition 80 Series Build

Covered this a couple of times before, but here goes again...... In Lorin's case the suspension was lowered by removing spacers, but we didn't clean out the props - (having never had to lower suspension before it never occurred to him or us). Lowering caused the props to be compressed but with...

Fuel twiddling on the 1HD-T engine

I use RVS in Swindon for all our pumps and they have always done a great job, however the pumps will always come back at factory defaults and will need tuning up.
  42. Julian Voelcker

Fuel twiddling on the 1HD-T engine

They can't. They only ever know about the injection pump. Yes I guess they can find out about the injectors and spray patterns, but then they need to know the injection timing, the piston shape, the engine capacity, valve timing, the compression ratio, etc, etc. They would need to know all...

Fuel twiddling on the 1HD-T engine

Pump guys will only ever set the pumps back to factory defaults, you can only really 'tune' the pumps on the engine.

Fuel twiddling on the 1HD-T engine

I generally force the seal on the load volume screw. As you know it does give instant results, never adjust by more than 1/8th of a turn and turn clockwise to increase fuelling, as soon as you begin to get smoke under acceleration, stop, back off an 1/8th of a turn and then start the fine...

Fuel twiddling on the 1HD-T engine

The key to tuning is to understand what each tweak does - please don't randomly crank things to the max because no two vehicle are the same and so what works for one vehicle may not work for the next. I've had 24 valves where I have started by doing the standard LCOOL tweaks and they have ended...

    wont rev after rebuild

OK, I would check the engine earths as a starting point. As for the low revs shouldn't be down to kick down cable - actually just disconnect it on the pump to rule it out. What work has been done to it? Are you getting any smoke? How is it running at tickover?

    Alarm system suggestions

I can't remember which truck it was on, but there is a cover on some stop solenoids held in place with security bolts (that snap off) that has it's own wiring controlled by the alarm so powering the stop solenoid on it's own had no effect. I think it was on either a 100 or a 24valve 80. The...

Yes, can do, but am short on donors at the moment - one of the problems is that the housings are often cracked which means that they end up being a lot more to refurb.
