Travel through Africa - Question about entering on Carnet, leaving temporarily

Does anyone have any experience with traveling through Africa on a Carnet, entering a country on the Carnet, placing the vehicle in storage, flying out of the country for a few days, and returning and picking back up with the trip? Is their any country in particular that I should consider if I...

    Figuring Pay Load

All is good, friends. I often forget about the part of he trip where I still have to drive across Europe. It's hard enough reading up on the varying laws throughout the different countries, now I have to add a bunch of weight to the vehicle, changing its manufactured design. I'll just drive slow...

    Figuring Pay Load

I knew manufacturers low balled their numbers to provide a margin of safety and to keep from getting sued, but if this is correct than Toyota really low-balled it on the 80-Series. Evidently the gutter mounts are pretty sturdy and so are 80-Series. This is a photo of an 80 in Bolivia carrying a...

    Figuring Pay Load

Paddler Ed - Man, I feel like I should pay you for that answer. If I am hearing you right, if there were no laws on weight then the uprated coils and shocks are capable of carrying more weight, but due to law it does not allow you to exceed the weight unless you get a new registration for the...

Cool man. Thanks, and great tip on the scale. I have decided to leave the partridge. I was told they don't shit, but I guess that was a lie.

    Figuring Pay Load

I figured. So, that said, is there a way to make sure I don't overload or is it the old eyeball technique? Rack, RTT, and tools (shovel/hi-lift) up top, 160l auxiliary tank and bash plates underneath, possibly a 50l water tank inside, along with African Outback short drawers, ARB compressor...

    Figuring Pay Load

Hi, I am trying to figure out my payload. I have a 1997 Land Cruiser 1HD-FT. The COC from Toyota says 2460 kg mass in working order. It then says 3060 kg permissible laden mass. When you look at distribution of max mass though (1500 kg/1950 kg max mass per axle [F/R]) and add those together you...

Shane from LabRak, after an hour and a half at FedEx, was finally able to ship the Custom Designed 80-series Modular Roof Rack in 13 separate boxes. This past weekend we drove the truck and a car down to Kulmbach. We dropped the car at Taubenreuther and headed into the Czech Republic for some cheap down hill skiing, cross country skiing, swimming, and sauna action; great food, great accommodations, and great prices. I like the Czech...

    Preparedness???????

Maybe it's my military background, but I like to take a layered approach to my preparations. I figure the better prepared you are the further you can go, and the further away from civilization you can travel. Look at vehicle mobile and foot mobile. There is a huge difference (literally) in what...

Need schooling on power output after certain upgrades - HELP!

Solved - Breaks needed bedding and power loss due to all of the things mentioned in the threads - higher profile, larger size tires. All is good. Now a winch riddle: I was taught that at a minimum you should have a winch that will pull 1.5 times the vehicle weight when fully loaded.I am...

HDJ-80 with 1HD-FT from Oxford to Cape Town

Actually, after some thought, I want to thank you Philip A. I guess most people just look at the "Home" page of the website, and if it said to you, he wants to fix Africa, then I need to change it. Perhaps it's the pictures? It shows pictures of the kids from the orphanage first, then you get...

And my trip isn't about saving Africa it's about helping wounded service members (which I am) and an orphanage that happens to be in Africa (which I've been to). Please read the full content of a website before you bash it with your political and socioeconomic commentary.

If you want to "help", the only thing that can actually make a difference is for you to come here, spend a few years learning how things work here, and use your skills to open businesses that will give jobs to those who care for, and improve economies that have absolutely nothing in common with...

I agree with you Philip A. At this point I am merely trying to stimulate interest. From the little time I did spend in Africa I noticed - as is true in other parts of the world- the things you described above. I do believe that creating jobs and putting people to work helping their own...

Need schooling on power output after certain upgrades - HELP!

Wouldn't you know if the proportioning valve was not adjusted? The valve, as I have read just has a low and high pressure side, and is used the separate the front and rear brakes. If the pressure is not equalized on both sides then the piston slides to one side and causes the brake warning light...

Roger, Ever thought of buying an old one, designing that, have somebody make you a nice version and patenting it? It's not just here, but in forums worldwide that this very same topic is covered with varying degrees of success in adjustment, from math equations to sharpie marks, from raising...

Need schooling on power output after certain upgrades - HELP!

I am in the same situation. The recommendations for my setup are to keep 400lbs of load in the rear. I think once everything is setup I should have more than enough weight to cover that. So apparently this valve and its adjustment are quite important.

I have read a few of the chapters and, aside from being well written, is as near complete a resource as I can imagine. It is a wonderful book. I guess that I will endorse it this way. I spent around 15 years operating in US Special Operations, and so my planning is always worst case scenario...
