Found this "some where"

It is about the "fiber washer" relating to the torque converter in the auto box, of the 100 series.

When did the problem get fixed by Toyota?

Not really but hopefully you don't have debris to worry about. My understanding of this fault is that a washer is wearing so that will just be making paste. AFAIK the terminal problem is that eventually it wears very thin and then breaks up into bigger fragments that cause the gearbox failure. The lock up friction plate may start to break up eventually as well which would throw more unwanted debris into the box.

Having had an 80 series box out with the transfer box attached, and swapped the transfer box on my 100, I would take the extra time to take the transfer box off the auto box, then drop the auto box as it will make the box much lighter and better balanced and really isn't much extra work or complication.

All - I've spoken to an AT specialist in Bristol (JP (Automatic Transmissions) Ltd) and they seem to know their stuff! This is what they had to say about the thrust washer problem:

"The bakerlite converter thrust was in the Aisin A440, A442, or 450-43LE series of transmissions... If you have the AW30-40 it may suggest they are deeper rooted transmission problems...

We normally find both the thrust and the metal wear. It might be best to check the sump oil and maybe change the filter. If we do the converter we can let you know how much debris their might be by the level of wear. I know a lot of people just change the converter and seem to get away with it - the amount of debris created is not massive - it should be sorted by the filter. Sometimes the friction lining may start to come off as well - so you might see friction - but again we can let you know this if we do the converter."

It turned out that my tranny is an A442F which has the 'Bakerlite' problem. After stripping out the AT sump and filter, I couldn't find any metal debris. Will be stripping the rest out tomorrow and sending the TC off. Will keep posted

If any one can put a time period that this problem was alive for, until Toyota fixed it, I would be most pleased.

Thanks Jon,

Quite a good starter for TC issues.

Thanks Uhu,

Interesting, so does that mean that after vin # JTEHC05J904005603, that the 100 series being manufactured were already containing the newer revised washer ?
