Thought i'd put up a small build thread for my truck (only had it for four months!)

When I first got the truck I knew the brakes needed doing. Since I work for a aftermarket parts supplier, It's a pretty cheap and easy to get stuff from work. :D

Decided to do the fronts on the weekend, and the rears the following weekend........ :hand:

So far so good, Untill half way through, trying to undo the little torx screws were so tight they kept breaking our torx drives. Turns out someone has loctite'd them in (maybe you're supposed to?) So we had to drill them out. Had to wait a couple days to get new ones from Toyota!

Just as bad as I had feared.

After waiting for the following weekend, take two! Done... Backed it out of the workshop to test the brakes.. BANG! lost all pedal pressure.

The rotor had gotten so thin, that it had snapped the hat off the actual rotor, and snapped the rotor into 3 pieces and this had caused the piston to pop out of the caliper, dumping all my brake fluid.

Parked up the truck untill the following day, went into work and got the parts for the rears, unfortunately we didn't have a caliper in stock, so had to flag that for now.

Anyways, many more successful plays later, i was driving home along the motorway, and noticed a clanging noise. Only under load though. Not being too familiar with 4wds, i didn't really know where to start. Tried everything I thought of, and was adamant that it was the transfer case. I drained the oil, looked at the sump plug and there was some fine metal shards. I thought yep, this is defiantly it, as im running a bit more torque than factory. After a month and a half, i managed to source a gearbox/transfer case for it.

I had a holiday planned to go south for a weekend, so the race was on to get the box in before the Saturday. Managed to do it on the Friday night, but couldn't test it (loud truck + angry neighbors = police visits).

Saturday, woke up, packed the truck and set on my merry way. Before I had even hit the end of my street, The dreaded clanging was back. So, Decided to drain diff oil.

7182829469_540f722574_c.jpg

Yup, Defiantly the diff. (Diff has been welded locked which i knew about)

After making a few phone calls, I went around to a buddys house (40mins away) as he had a lockrite locker in his an axle from his old truck.

Said truck

7368065324_732c0e84ac_c.jpg

Managed to get the old diff out, and new one in! Choice only 5 hours late on my departure time. :naughty: Apparently not.

This is what my diff looked like

Truck decided to run like a bag of D!¢k$!! replaced plugs as old ones were fouled.. still no go. Went home and threw my toys

Auto sparky mate came over, said coil pack wiring. (Common problem with 1JZ engine that the coil pack clips get hot, crack, and break.) The previous owner of the truck has just put spade type terminals onto the pins, so went to Toyota again, and got some of the clips. Well f&*K! $25 +gst each (GST is like VAT for you guys? 15%?) but I thought it would be a good idea to get them anyways.

rc1010.jpg

Got him to wire them up.. still no go. Pulled out the ecu to find this lovely wiring.

7368045442_a39bef7240_c.jpg

Another common problem with early jap Toyota ECU's is they used shitty capacitors, that ended up leaking and shorting circuits out. Sent it to a customer of mine from work, and he replaced them all for me with new ones

But NO, still no go. Truck is running an Apexi SAFC (Can cange A/F ratios etc) which had been wired in with Ethernet cable from a computer :shifty: which i did not know, but in the process of removing the ECU, had broken the Ethernet wire for the MAP sensor. Great! heres my problem.... :naughty: NOPE!

After re-soldiering the wire, nothing changed. He checked the ECU voltages and stuff and found the ECU was putting 5V out, rather than receiving it! So the ECU is at some guru that is pretty good, to be fixed. And here I am for today.

Still truckless.

It's a great tale. Sorry for the grief, but another real story about adversity. Just goes to show that it's not Toyotas that are unreliable - just their previous owners

Keep us posted.

Do we have a JZ lurking under the bonnet then? 1 or 2 GE or GTE???

I'm a big fan of the JZ engines, I've built many & run a 1JZ-GTE in my Toyota Cresta drift car, 485bhp

[youtube:wfcp7prf]4j4TCfvnSt8[/youtube:wfcp7prf]
(speedo is about 30% out)

1J. The older Non VVT twin turbo engine

Mines pretty stock, Bosch 044 Fuel pump, FPR, Custom Y pipe to full 3" exhaust. I'm guessing you've got a big single? gt3076r? link me to some pictures? Looks like a JZX81 by your sig?

I used to have a S14.. Nothing too special.

Yep mines a JZX81 Cresta & a good guess: Garrret GT3076r single turbo, emanage & 650cc injectors.

300hp at 3000 rpm & 485hp at 1.4 bar & 510 ftlb of torque, its a torque machine for sure.

ETA: Just out of interest what gearbox/bellhousing are you running??

JZX81%20CRESTA%20EDC%2011-R6-03.jpg

It's running R154, and a custom bell housing. You can source them locally off a guy for around $600NZD (270 pound?)

GReddy Emanage? How did you find this? I've read it's not that great for the money? Running VVTi?

great truck, and thread!

same colour as mine.

im pleased to see im not the only one cursed with electrical problems.

never seen a brake rotor (we call them brake discs over here. ;) ) break into pieces like that!

how many k's has your truck done?

Trucks done 290,000. So like, 76% of the way to the moon

Friday night here, Made some more progress. Auto sparky mate came back with the ECU, and had a lot more knowledge about 1J ecu's etc. Turns out the actual map sensor is fried now, So can't do anything until i get another MAP sensor. I'm going to the biggest Toyota wrecker in NZ, so hopefully they have one on the shelf.

Dirtiest 1J you'll ever see!

7374294606_88c689d7e0_c.jpg

To create a full time locked diff.

It's pretty much free to create, quite popular over here in 4wds and in drift cars etc. They are illegal however.

Trying to find a MAP sensor is trying to find a needle in a haystack. Couldn't find one in NZ what so ever, And cannot source any new. (Toyota NZ has never even brought one into the country before) I've found one, but it's being shipped from AUS.

And now the waterpump is leaking. GRRRRRRRR.

So new Waterpump, Tensioner, Idler, Crank seal, Cam seals, Thermostat, and cambelt.

Oh well, Least I won't have to do it again.....

Replaced all the seals, timing belt, Idler, Waterpump, Thermostat, Tensioner etc

Drove it round for a bit, Was running like crap after been sitting for so long so took it for a looooonnnggg drive. By the end of the night was running much much better.

Since it was running good, I decided to go out to a 4WD park a little over an hour away from my place, Was awesome.. Until I realised I didn't have 4WD

Swapped around the vacuum lines, wasn't working, still don't know why? Will look later on one night after work one day this week.

Did what I could in 2WD.. Wasn't bad, good to drive this thing after nearly 4 months!!

I'll add some videos later on, spent a bit of time on 3 wheels

[youtube:j39zgyer]PuvKb6F-tmk[/youtube:j39zgyer]

Need to get my new shocks and springs in for more flex :shifty:

have you managed to gt the 4 wheel drive working?

im guessing you have, from all the driving on 3 wheels you did in your video?

what suspension you thinking of getting?

i want to change mine soon.

Nope, Haven't had a look at it just yet. When I get home it's too dark to have a look at, So will have a look tomorrow after MudFest tomorrow!

Can get shocks and spring super cheap through work. $600NZD/300Pound

Dobisons Coil springs and Raw Nitro Shocks (Subsidy of PowerDown) Not sure if you guys reconise those brands, but super big over here.

After work on Saturday I decided to fill up the truck and head down to mudfest.

Ouchies.

Mudfest was super cool, I really wanted to enter, maybe next year?

That first pic is weird - is it just me or at first glance, so all the trucks look like models ..... :?

The 2nd pic - is that a model Suzuki? If it is a real Jimny, then the tractor in the background does look huge, however the driver is still in proportion (with tractor) but looks massive against the Jimny .....i.e. The Driver, the tractor and the Suzuki scales all look wrong? (assuming that the Suzuki is real???) :?

i can see why its called mudfest.

$1.43 a litre works out at £0.73, and your saying ouch when you fill up!

were paying double that over here, due to the stupid amount of tax the government put on our fuel!

i was thinking the exact same thing Chad, they do look like models.

that suzuki is one of suzuki's first 4x4's, its a suzuki LJ80!

it went LJ80 then SJ then Samurai then Jimny.

http://www.globalsuzuki.com/automobile/ ... /1977.html

$1.43 is Diesel, I use 98Octane ($2.16 - £1.09) + an octane booster per tank of gas (Another $12 :p)

We just had a massive drop, used to be $2.24 for 95Octane £2.13

That tractor is probably the biggest one I've seen in New Zealand.

It's only the way i've edited it in Instagram, using Tilt shift method.

Shit you guys must think im weird :p
