Hi Guy's,

I don't know if any guy's have had this problem. I start the engine which is a full reconditioned 2H engine it will run for say a second and then stop. I do this about 3 times and the last one shows the oil pressure and the engine will stay running.
I have a new relief valve and spring and or so the other presser valve near the oil filter. But still does this when cold. Tried new oil filter and other things but still the same when cold. I have removed the sump and checked the pick up line to see if a washer is there and the other line as well but all seams to be tight so not air can be picked up. It's like the engine oil drains back into the sump. I thought the relief valve would stop that or is it a gasket that has been left out round the oil pump that would let oil run back into the sump. I have checked every thing but the taking off the housings to see if a gasket is missing.
if you have had the problem can you let me know so I can fix it please. Cheers
John

Hi John,
Just another line of thought.
does your engine has an edic for starting and stopping?
On my 3b engine the edic shuts down the engine when there is no oil pressure.

I turn the key and it starts but stops due to no oil pressure. I start it again and the same thing happens. No oil pressure. I do this for 3 to 4 times. The engine only runs for less the a second and stops. But on the 3rd or forth time after it gets engine oil pressure which is shown on my ext oil gauge the engine will stay running. I just thought I would ask if some person had come across this problem. I do not have the dash board in dash as it is just about ready for the top coat of paint. You see I have fully restoring the 1984 HJ47. every thing has be renewed. my seats will be the next job to be done after the panels have there top coat of paint on them. It has been a very big job. But this engine stopping and starting because no engine oil pressure has got me.
John

I am sure the edic is doing that. But with nothing on the dash knocked up yet I wouldn't know where it would be. It would have to be that as I have said no oil pressure the engine will stop. So now that we have some good weather it is getting close to putting the colour top coat on. Then I can finish it off by adding all the dash stuff and hope I can find the problem.
John

Hi guy's,

It looks as fi no person has had this problem. I'll get back to you when I have my HJ47 painted and read to rock & Roll. This has taken me about 5 year for a total restored cruiser. Its will be paint the white colour as to the number on the com/plate.
Talk to you then.
John

Well I still have not found the problem. no oil pressure after 3 or 4 starts. It runs for about a second and then stops. Does this each time and on the 3 rd or 4th the oil pressure will show and the engine will keep running like a top. So to me it is draining back to it sump. I have a external oil pressure gauge so I can see the oil pressure when it there. These 2 H engine don't have a pump they have two gears that pump the oil through the engine. But I have changed and checked every thing. I even removed the sump and check the pick up pipe. all good. Love to add a one way valve in front of the pick up that would stop it or show up some where hay.
Anyway that's all I can do.

Cheers John

Sorry, I missed it before.

My H does the same; what oil are you running? I'm wondering if I'm running something a bit too thin, or modern (may need to go back to dinosaur). It didn't used to until I changed the oil when I first got it - so that's why I think the oil is the cause of the problem.

I'm likely to go to an old fashioned Penrite or similar; the Penrite oil finder suggests 20W60 mineral for the H, whereas I'm using about a 15W40 (in line with Shell's recommendation)

What are you running as oil?

Also @Rodger is good on the 40 stuff, so we'll see what he comes up with.

Hi John,

I have been thinking through your problem ...
My 2H takes a few seconds to show oil pressure on the gauge but, as I do not have an EDIC fitted, I don't give it any extra revs until the pressure shows. It was a lot worse when I first got the truck nearly 18 years ago and an engine flush really helped but your engine is reconditioned so that eliminates most of the causes leaving only the grade of oil.
When in the UK I used an old style 20/50 but since moving to Spain , which is much warmer as is Australia, I use 15/40. I only use Total non synthetic specifically for non-turbo'd engines.
You state 'fully reconditioned engine'. Did you rebuild it or was it an engine specialist? The reason for asking is 'running in ' oil is very thin and assuming that you have changed it some of it will remain in the system, thereby thinning whatever grade of oil you have added.
Another thought... the EDIC rod has adjustment on it, perhaps this needs setting up for the rebuilt engine...

Let us know how you get on

Regards,

Rodger

Hi Guy's,
I am using RX Super oil by Castrol 15W40 in my 2H engine. I ran this oil from day one but changed it 2 times because trying to find the problem. I also don't have a EDIC filter on my engine. It a 1984 HJ47. Some how it is running back into the sump but I don't know how and where it would do this. It was fully recon engine by a recondition engine place who have done 100's of these engines. I have rang him and he doesn't know why. But to bring it down once on the road so they can check it out and see what it is. That is in Sydney NSW. Because of the very hot weather and the bush fire smoke and now it's raining I haven't put the colour on my cruiser yet. So when some nice weather comes my way that's what I'll be doing.
Cheers
John

Hi John,

You appear to have a plan by taking it back to the engine builder but I was thinking that maybe the oil pressure relief valve or the spring are not seating properly. Particularly if the spring is not holding the valve closed then, potentially, the oil will drain back down (IMO) over a period of time.

Let us know how you get on.

Rodger

Hi Guy's
Thanks for your help in trying find out the problem. I have bought a new relief valve but waiting on a spring to turn up as well.
I spoke to the guy that does the reconditioning these engines nd he said no it would not be that valve. But I will try it as soon as the spring turns up. Right now here in NSW we are having a really bad weather is wind and rain. It has put out the big bush fires thank god but hard to work on my cruiser with it pouring down.
I will let you know as soon as the spring has turned up and is fitted.

Hay Rodger,

It was the relief valve that was the problem. Which means that the hole the relief sits in is warn and I do need the larger valve so the engine oil doesn't run back into the sump.
I spoke to so many people about my problem here in Australia and even talked about if it could be the relief valve and all said no. Just add a new valve and spring which I did and still had the same problem. After talking to you guy's I thought I would have nothing to lose only money to buy the longer relief valve and see.
Yesterday I put the longer valve in my 2H engine and ran it to make sure the valve did it job. But I wanted to check it the next day to see if the problem was still there. Starting it up this morning and a very cool morning the engine started and up came the oil pressure.

So guy's if you are worried about your oil pressure being a little low and takes a long time to show. Go and buy the longer relief valve to get back the oil pressure your 2H engine should this also works on a 12HT engine same relief vale used.
So there you go the problem fixed.
All the best guy's and hope some of you use this longer relief valve to fix and up the right oil pressure.
Cheers
John.

Hi Rodger,

I added the picture of the two relief valves and you can see the longer one that has done the trick in not letting the engine oil past it. There was suppose to be a new relief valve added when the engine was reconditioned. But I'm not sure. But if any guy's have a problem with engine oil pressure and their 2H or 12 HT engine have done a lot on K's or miles. It would be better change to the longer relief valve to get the pressure back that it should.
I happy now that I found the problem.
Cheers
John

Hi John,

Delighted that the longer valve has cured the problem, so much so that I think I will change the valve and spring in my engine for the longer one. Could you let me have the part numbers? I am assuming that they are from Mr T's emporium but if not who is the manufacturer?

Regards,

Rodger

Hi Rodger,
You know I live in NSW Australia. That relief valve and spring cost $64.4500AUD with postage. this is the company that sells the longer relief valve. Part # 15131-220105 valve. 15132-760115 spring. Hope this helps. They do have an email address which is
[email protected]. see how you go.John

Hi John,

Thanks for the part numbers which look as if they are Toyota part numbers. I shall follow up.

Many thanks,

Rodger

Hi Guy's
That was the problem with no oil pressure on start up. I let it go for 5 day with out starting the engine just to make sure that was the problem. Sure enough I have oil pressure just about on start up. Happy hay.
So guy's if any of you have low oil pressure and the engine is in good condition I would change the relief valve over to a longer one as it just maybe the hole is warn where it sits.

Anyway my problem is fixed now so no more racking my brain to what it could be.

Cheers and have good days.
John

Hi Guy's.
Today I started my engine and 6 times it started and stopped because no oil pressure and on the 6th time it stayed run because the oil pressure come up. The only problem I see is the relief valve isn't closing right off or sitting all the way home. Maybe I should take it out again and crank the engine to blow oil out the relief valve hole and see if there is any crap in there to stop the valve from closing right up. It's funny that this engine didn't have that problem before. it still ran once you got it going. I had to use the glow plugs even when hot to start it. I'll take the valve out and scratch around and see if I have any crap and cover the hole up so oil doesn't go every where. 'I'll be back to let you know if some thing came out the hole.

Hi Guy's,
Nothing I could see come out. so I will give it a go on Friday my time to see if any thing did. Ranting cats and dogs is a saying here maybe your way as well Ha. Tomorrow Thursday more. First dam very hot weather then dam bush fires and rain which we need. But not raining in the whole of Australia. Unreal hay.
Take care guy's and I'll be back on Friday to let you know if it is ok or still the same.
Cheers
John

Hi John,

You should not have to use the glow plugs after the initial morning start and particularly as it is hot out there. And you do not have an EDIC unit fitted....
Assuming you do not press the throttle during the starting procedure, could it be that the idle screw on the throttle body is closed or not open enough?

Just a thought...

Regards,

Rodger
