4.2 intercooler

Hi Everyone
I am thinking of getting an intercooler for my 1992 4.2 auto 80 series.Just wondered if anyone had done this and what the results were?
Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,
Generally you can expect 20-30% increase in power and torque, with more
benefit coming from a larger exhaust as part of the package. In theory
you can also improve economy if you aren't too heavy footed.
You get more benefits from intercooling a 24valve engine, but they are
sometimes a bit more expensive to intercool because more work is
involved.
Before doing so, it is worth making sure that the injectors and fuel
pump are in good condition so that when the intercooler is added the
whole lot can be properly setup.
Do you have a particular supplier in mind - there are an increasing
number around with varying grades of kit and varying prices.

Hi Julian
is LC100 with the same engine as LC80 24valves and added intercooler?

Hi Lubomir,
It's basically the same block, but has electronically controlled
injection system and a smallish intercooler.
I'm not sure if the heads the same, but doubt it.

Hi Julian & Lubomir,
This is my intercooler.
The top two brackets attach into the upper radiator support panel (the
ends tanks are reinforced with 10mm plate where the mounts screw in and
has internal guide vanes in the top corners) the hoodlock requires some
trimming so that the lower bolt is only just usable. The width is such
that it clears the grille brackets on the headlights at each end by
about 10mm. The bottom lines up roughly flush with the lower rad support
panel. It is a VERY big intercooler. The same intercooler is used for 12
and 24 valve trucks the only difference is the last pipe attaching to
the inlet manifold is different between the two engines. This is 'All
Americans' intercooler from the Netherlands as used as a factory fit
option in the Netherlands. Depending on whether you upgrade the turbo to
the 'Sport' model or not you can expect 250-275hp and 500-650Nm (vs
stock 180hp & 380Nm) on a 1HD-FT and a easy 20+% improvement in economy.
The pic shows some of the parts the majority of the hoses are either
stell or Samco silicone it is a beatifully made kit that looks better
than factory when fitted.
FTE injectors are different to FT but I don't know if the heads are the
same or not.
The front covers and some of the gear train are different.
As Julian states the factory FTE intercooler is very small.
