there is more chance of there being a welder in a town or settlement
able to fix a steel tank leak then having an aluminium tank that cannot
be fixed once it has been damaged, it cannot be repaired, its the same
problem with alloys - if they get bent they cannot be knocked back into
shape because aluminium under stress becomes brittle and breaks, so
can't be knocked back into shape without ruining the whole wheel.
It has to be steel or another material, not aluminium for long range
treks

Personally I would be wary of stainless steel tanks in the bush - what
is the likelihood of someone having the kit to weld it? (And the same
for exhausts).
The advantage of the Aus tanks (I assume that they are LongRanger) is
that they are designed to use the LC sender unit to tie in with the
fuel gauge.
If you want to get the maximum range you can also get a direct
replacement of the factory tank taking it (from memory) up to around
160litres - you should be able to get upto around 1500miles range.
That is the route I would be inclined to go so that if one tank gets
contaminated, you can still run on the other. The recommendations is
to get a pair of Walbro pusher pumps down on the tanks and then a pair
of Racor filters under the hood.

I was responding to an email - do you REALLY think I'll get some person
somewhere to weld a fuel tank? the thing is, ol man, I do things this
way: I check these things BEFORE I go, and get them sorted, repaired or
whatever whilst they have NO fuel in them.....then I put a bit in, see
how it all hangs in together (i.e. that there are no leaks) then it is
sorted....thent he tank is filled - so far so good, then the upping and
downing and side to side-ing goes on, swishing around inside, them I'm
ready to rock and roll......see as eay as that! my advice, check out
everything before going anywhere...
So there..! I understand toy from bosnia is in the Uk, I was wondering
whether you would be adverse to us meeting up, when he is with you too,
discussing vehicle importation, and things related to this.

Roofrack - thanks for this, as I'm still thinking of having one of
these fitted, I've looked at several but am still undecided. I haven't
been following the threads on the group so much, so I was wondering
whether there are any links that might be useful to check out - I can do
that today because where I am working today they're all quite laid back,
not like the place I usually work at...

For off the shelf racks, adjusted to your car, try Patriot racks, from I
can't remember where. Living in chaos at the moment because of building
work, so main computer off the air. Also have my car back from final piece
of work so now ready to go. Hope I can afford a LRFT before september but
unlikely. Car drives like a dream, quiet and comfortable, looking forward to
the real drives witgh it in Africa.

thinking of having a set of lights fitted on the rack which I can do

That should be aimed at Roman, not me!
What sort of welding is most common, gas or stick?
Personally I wouldn't venture into Africa without my own on board welder.
With regards fixing fuel tanks, one of the best things I have found is a
product called Milliput, one of those things that you can only find in a
good old fashioned hardware shop, but can be used to fix pretty well
anything. I have used it for sealing boats and fuel tanks and it can
cure when wet, which is ideal.

I was born and brought up in Kenya and Swahili was my first language,
although not quite so fluent any more...
We're going to Morocco, Mauritania, possibly Senegal and Mali, although
getting in and out of both is full of hassle and hustlers, and dependant on
the situation, Algeria and after that not quite sure. It is a 3 month
sabbatical for my doctor partner and a great opportunity to take medium
format stills. What we are going to do is ever changing and 3 months would
give us enough time to get to the Cape but we don't want to drive all the
time. Car is almost ready but I continually worry about weight on the rack.
Cannot face the expense of additional fuel tank at the moment but will have
to soon.
What are your plans? May get a bo*****ing from Julian as we;re off topic but
shhhh. He may not hear...

Out of interest, how well is the overlanding market catered for with
regards mailing lists and forums.
It has occurred to me to setup a second list off the domain
specifically for overlanding, since it is increasing in popularity and
with LCs being the vehicle of choice.
I know a few here would be interested, but what about other people you

Possibly the most used and best current site is Sahara Overland, an addition
to Chris Scotts book. There are some Italian, French and german sites, but
certainly for the English speaking overlander Sahara Overland is the
probabvly the best known. Have a look at the forum here:

It's broken down into several areas but from a 4wd pov, LRs dominate as you
might expect.

It's a much bigger forum: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com and the The
Sahara topic is a mere subsection. It was created mainly for bikers
but has outgrown the format. The trouble with overlanding forums is
that overlanders are usually scattered all around the globe and have
better things to do than idle their time away in internet cafes. :)

I have often been to kenya and some of my best friends live out in karen.There
is also a strong southafrican community shattered all over but mainly in
the highlands.I always thought of kenya as the epitomy of africa. That has
all changed in the recent years and living there is not necessarily as attractive
as it was.They have made the parks so expensive( u probably lucky, kenyan
passport?)it is for the masai mara now 60$us per day. Still cheaper than
Tanzania.(125$). That is barely affordable.Gone are the eighties with 3$
entrance fee.
I am eying the route libia,niger,cameroun,centrafrique,gabon,kongo,angola,
southwest,SA.I wont have much time as i just want to take the car to SA and
putting it on a barch is not for me. The second car will stay with me in
the UK for trips to Russia, middle east and northern africa. I know this
sounds strange but my working situation is a bit peculiar/different.When
i work than its lots but there is also weeks with spare time.And that bit
i want to make use off.
I ll be back in the UK mid June and we should really sit/drink together.
By the way the plain tank filling into the main is not so expensive. I will
place my order only in july.

Hi Guys
I have only two questions today for you all. while looking out the window at
the cruiser today and reading some threads from another forum about some guy
having a problem when he installed OME springs. He noticed that his cruiser
did not sit level and of course he checked every thing again and again.
While looking at mine it looked a little uneven, I thought it was the window
sill but then checked the cruiser. There is a difference of 20mm in the
difference between the driver and passenger side, the driver side being
higher by the 20 mm. Is this normal, some sort of reason like when the
driver gets in it levels out. What speed does your auto box change into
fifth, mine changes at 50 MPH.
