Hallo everybody
Sticking my head out again. I sorted the insurance story at 342 ? fully comp. Thanks
for the Tesco tip. Sometime ago i asked for a quote from 4WD sys. in OZ:
long range tank 170 li(Where spare is, independent supply to engine)including
twin solenoid kit, factory dual filler, fact.gauge sender unit and fact.fuel
gauge/altimeter roof console
1091 Oz $
Snorkels
267 Oz $
Suspension lift 3" under load, shocks and castor kit
953 Oz $
airfreight to manchester airport for 2 tank kits, 2 lokka, 2 safari snorkels,
1 suspension kit
900 Oz $
There should be more discount on the prices; i will negotiate some 5 or 10
%(is possible)
Then one will have to add 27.5 tax to all prices ( the chap is willing to
send a second invoice with less on it)
If you think the prices are any good let me have your feedback. Eg. you battle
to get the auxillary tank in the uk (footloose, frogs).the two tanks will
make up 90l + 170/190l(two versions) Intersting for the africa travellers.Delivery
time 2-4 weeks.
Regards
Mike ( 1gbp =2.45 $)

Hi Mike,
Looks like a better deal than I got from FL4x4, as it contains all the
extra bits and the factory dual filler.
Just wondering, do they sell the castor kit sepearately?

Hi Roman
Yes they do. I can find out the price but dont expect an answer to quickly
as the Ozis are very laid back.

Hi Mike,
What is the current exchange rate with Oz?
27.5% tax seems very high - when I looked into importing stuff from the
US the pricing worked out at upto 5% as the import tax (varies
depending on kit - e.g. No tax on Winches) and then VAT at 17.5% on
top.
Have you done comparisons against UK prices - Frogs Island are usually
pretty good at providing price sheet for kit of an 80 to act as a
guide, most other suppliers will want specific part details before
getting back with price. At the end of the day they all source ARB/OME
kit via the same distributor.
Also, it seems good that you can get the factory filler, etc, all UK
suppliers seem to supply tanks but then fabricate the fillers.
When I last looked, aux tanks seemed cheaper in SA.
Have you put all the figures into a spreadsheet - would be interested
to see if you have - can supply a template it you want.
Don't forget that many quoted exchange rates, might not relate to the
actual rate you get from your bank, etc.

Give a bit of time to is the exchange rates - the prices you quote seem very reasonable - I've got stuff in from australia on a couple of occasions, at that time the exchange rate worked extremely well in my favour in that the last import was an 'industrial strength' (well, this is what I call it) air compressor for the desert trips - wonderful piece of equipment. It cost me =A3140, excellent piece of equipment, its better than any other air compressors I've ever tried including the best badged ones. I guess it is taylor made for desert terrain - I'm after another, and one of them will be mounted underneath the bonnet together with a third battery and relay for auxiliary power.
Compare exchange rates, they might be in your favour too.

Mike et al.
There emight also be an issue with customs, so check this too, as we
have to pay customs and excise (cash on delivery) when the bits are
delivered - they can be quite expensive

Where did this 27.5% come from? If it is aus. tax then we would not
have to pay as the goods are being exported. The price for the tank
kit looks good but I@d like to know if there was a way to cut the
shipping charges, Canal barge, or whatever. With the shipping the cost
is going to exceed the cost here.
What is the tank made from? I know of a company in the UK that
make nylon tanks and have been thinking of going that route. I may be
interested in the rest of the kit.

Julian,

Hey Clive
the Oz vat is off the prices - it is HM finest who wants to see some money.
But Julian is right : on certain parts you dont pay 10%. the realistic add
will be 5% and 17.5% which will come down on a "red invoice" so all in all
it should not be more then 15-17%. Further the prices will go down another
10% on discount. The Shipping charges i find little for 2 tanks,springs,lokka,2wd
kit,2 snorkels and same small bits, 392? divided by 8 items = 50? each. Cant
ship one tank to london from leeds for that. I have a little experience with
plastic and nylon tanks, when travelling in the bush, i would be reluctant(broke
one plastic and had one leaking nylon) not saying this cant happen to stainless
steel but they are easier to repair. Also maybe our South African material
quality was not so good...The tanks I want have to have an independent feed
to the engine, just the tanks are 669 oz$ feeding into your main tank(includes
pump and sender unit)
regards
mike

Mike,
I don't need another pump. The petrol cruiser has a pump for
feeding from the sub tank in to the main tank. The diesel has a two
way valve, switching from main to sub. All of the pumping is done by
the double pump in the engine bay.
Are the tanks stainless steel? I have been advised by a SA.
website that it will crack. Ali is the best apparently.
The nylon idea is from a company specialising in them. I have
lost their catalogue but will turn it up in a day or so. When I do I
will ask them about their reliability. I don't know if they do a tank
for cruisers yet but they will make them to your drawings.
If I go this route I will be after the fuel filler and the
instrument cluster, possibly the solenoid kit. There is no pump
mentioned in your original list.
Regards, Clive.

Personally I would be wary of stainless steel tanks in the bush - what
is the likelihood of someone having the kit to weld it? (And the same
for exhausts).
The advantage of the Aus tanks (I assume that they are LongRanger) is
that they are designed to use the LC sender unit to tie in with the
fuel gauge.
If you want to get the maximum range you can also get a direct
replacement of the factory tank taking it (from memory) up to around
160litres - you should be able to get upto around 1500miles range.
That is the route I would be inclined to go so that if one tank gets
contaminated, you can still run on the other. The recommendations is
to get a pair of Walbro pusher pumps down on the tanks and then a pair
of Racor filters under the hood.

S II landy, nissan patrol and a 15 ton 4x4 Magirus believe me i have broken
alot of things:(, but i assure you of one thing you will always find someone
with a welding kit or soldering flame. My old SII broke constantly the chassis/cross
member on the drivers side. Even in Zaire we welded the chassis of a landy
and i was going to put put my head on the block that this time we were out
of luck. I have once welded with my battery, works but not to rave about.
Superglue or epoxy does help also. I have tried to glue my tanks with various
epoxy and special glues- all a waste of time. When it has a hole....An interesting
observation was on the patrol that the tank was so badly battered after having
been stuck many times. The car` rear takes more battering when u get stuck
in mud.(rainy season, Mozambique:( )So for my taste steel is the better option.
Do not worrry to much about things breaking most are fixable in africa(not
neccessarily to uk standards). Few days ago there was a discussion about
roofracks. Everybody wants one infact you can have mine> and i tell u why
as well: corrugations will break your A-pillars with too much weight on the
top.I have seen many vehicles coming from Europe and by the time they got
to Kenya nearly all had cracked the A pillars. But I am getting carried away
and boring.

mike
