A tale of disaster averted?
A friend recently bought his first 1HDT 80 series (1994 UK model) and
while discussing what he should do to it the subject of big end bearings
came up. I've been meaning to do something about our two for about 5
years but finally got round to doing something about it!
My friends 80 went first (115K miles) and the bearings were like new, I
suspect a previous owner must have changed them. Then my 1994 went in
(approx 150K miles) and it looks like lady luck was smiling at me for
while now because one of the bearings was in a very bad way and all of
them were covered in surface spots that I suspect are a precursor to
delaminating.
A picture of the bad bearing:

The crank is surprisingly in perfect condition so all that damage must
be tiny particles slowly coming away.
Our 1993 HDJ80 is next, probably next week so I'll update you all with
the results of that one.
Jon.
