80 Series Roll Cage

Howaya guys
Has anyone fitted a roll cage to an 80 series cruiser? - I notice most
of the 40 series rock crawlers in US have all manner of them but cant
track anything specific for the 80 series.
Looking at what type of options there are or if you can upgrade the
seatbelt to a 5 point system as part of fitting a cage.
Any pointers appreciated
Cheers
Niall
HDJ80

Not seen an 80 with a roll cage but I'm sure there is one somewhere.
Australia? Unlike the 40s and LRs, the 80 is considerably stronger in the
body department and as a consequence much heavier. If I was overlanding in a
LR I would fit a cage. I overlanded in my 80 and didn't. I'm sure more info
will be forthcoming but you could talk to Paul Marsh at Footloose 4x4 as I
think he may have put a cage in a Cruiser. He's also recently bought himself
an 80 and I'm fairly certain he'll at the very least put a 5 point harness
in. He's a good bloke and knows his cars - Footloose are expensive but imho
streets ahead of Frogs for ideas and workmanship.

Thanks for that.

RE > 80 is considerably stronger in the body department
They're strong alright but I've included safety features in my budget so
while tempted to blow it on showers and other fancy gear - I'm going to
blow it on a cage and harness

The roof crush standard they are designed to is almost certainly FMVSS
216. Here is a simplified description:
http://www.citizen.org/autosafety/industry/design/roof_crush/gm_docs/12.
pdf
It is recognised to be grossly inadequate for large 4x4s since it is the
lesser of 1.5 times the empty weight of the vehicle or 5000 lbs. Toyota
*may* have done better, but looking at the A post on mine somehow I
doubt it.
Also it is a "static" (really slow moving) load using a large platen.
So yes, the 80 is stronger than a LR, but I still wouldn't want to roll
one at any sort of speed onto rocky ground.
Would I fit a cage? Probably only if I were deliberately going into
harm's way by rallying. I think you'd survive a typical roll over into
ditch scenario, as encountered here at home, and if you tumble down a
mountainside then nothing is going to save you! It's all extra weight.

Re > I have a safety devices internal cage in my HDJ80
Will check them out - thanks. What kind of price range - if you don't
mind me asking.
Re > My safety devices cage is very well built but also quite intrusive
to the cabin space
Will bear that in mind - if you have any pictures of the inside of your
truck would be interested to see the finished job.
Re > required removing the sun roof which requires removing the head
lining
Don't fancy having to remove the sun roof as had wanted that for access
to game viewing and photography
- Did you loose some sound insulation properties with the removal of the
head lining?
Thanks

Re > roof crush standard
Some interesting reading there - some horror stories elsewhere on that
site.
The weight ratio of a fully loaded cruiser on expedition (fuel, water,
spares, roof rack etc) would exaggerate the potential for pillar or roof
failure in a roll.
The internal cage could also mean you have something else to bang your
head off.... Will be interesting to see what the finished products look
like - no point getting one if you have to wear a helmet!
Also will be interesting to see what type of materials s are used and
what the added weight is of same.
Will keep list posted of anything relevant
Re > Would I fit a cage? Probably only if I were deliberately going into

Boils down to personal risk assessment and management.
I did a Safety Risk Assessment on some of the hazards likely to be
encountered during an African expedition with one of the safety officers
on site during lunch the other day - for the craic. Lots of risks to
manage - or not manage as the case may be. This is what got me onto the
notion of a safety cage and 5 point harness.
Incidentally - you can get a Cruiser AK47 proof with run flat tyres etc
for 50K in Germany! :)
Thanks

Hello the guys,
Well then this mights not be so bad idea! Some people say your head is
worth more money than your car. I did visit some trial's Sunday and
see some crazy 4x4 actions. Most them guy's wear helmet's all the
driving. Some roll over there 4x4 too but not any body got hurt.

Thanks Jon
Some useful pictures and info on the site.
I notice you have the "full cage" version - ie the whole roof is
protected. I'm going to investigate possibility of getting protection
for the cab only - similar to the cage that goes into the Hilux single
cab
Safety Devices website have good info also.
Hopefully by now they've modified the cage so it fits without having to
butcher the arm rests!
Good work on your behalf - fitting it yourself. Will be interesting to
see if you can still buy one yourself or have to use one of their
"approved fitters"
Thanks

Re > Presumably that means no diagonal supports down to the floor at the
back of the cage because it would cross the rear door openings?
It would have the diagonal supports - but they would cross the rear door
openings. This is a potential issue but I too have no seats in the back
so not a show stopper.
The boyz in Safety devices don't rekon my idea will work with their
system.
They only sell direct to public to countries where there is no approved
installer - Frogs island being the only 4x4 outfit in the UK at present
I've downloaded some of their drawings to see if a lad in Wexford that
does cages for sports cars can make one up.
Danger is that a DIY job might not work when put to the test. The Safety
device lads do stress test analysis etc - rekon Top Load protection is
7.5 times the vehicle weight - 5 times on side weight crush test.
Approx weight is 90 to 100 KG....
Thanks

RE> What is the gain of a 'short' cage?
Less weight and lower cost.
Re > That's a shame. I wonder what it takes to be an approved installer
and weather Frogs Island will sell you one without fitting it.
Just talking to Safety Direct lads - As there's no 4x4 "approved"
installers in Eire - they're willing to flog one to me direct! Looks
like this is my best option if I decide to run with it.
Re> I wonder how many Frogs have fitted to an 80?
Or how much they'd charge...
Anyway
Thanks for your learned insight on this Jon
I am now armed with info - which is dangerous

I had my roll cage fitted by safety devices directly and they were
cheaper than the approved installer I contacted when I had my defender
90. It was Good job thou plus they had problems with the 90 as they had
to make some altered parts as it was a fixed cost they footed the bill
of the alterations .but that's a land rover for you.
Yours truly, ray

It's Safety Devices will send me one - not you know who
BTW
If I needed more justification - need one to entre the Transsyberian
Rally - starts in August. Rekon I can make it from Capetown to Moscow in
4 months.....
That would be the job!!
Cheers

Protection and Performance will custom make you an excellent cage. I
dd a photo shoot at the premises last year. They can bend compound
curves from the tubes, so make the cage less intrusive designed to be
welded in, not bolt in.
The run a Paris Dakar truck that supplies the bikes, so I guess they
know what they're on about.
