Hi, I got a 89 landcruiser with the 4.0. The problem we are having is when charging the a/c it will charge up but the high pressure side keeps climbing, up to 300 plus, then the compressor will ,lock up. any ideas on what is going on?

Too much of a charge or air in the system, a vacuum should be introduced in the system before re-charging to remove air.
Also check the condition of your condenser, if the gas is not sufficiently able to disperse heat this will cause the pressure to rise.
Your 89 will use r12 refrigerant which is no longer available.
Used R406a as its designed to replace r12.
Turn a/c up full when recharging, make sure the compressor has enough oil and make sure the oil is correct.
Do not r134a, it will destroy the seals and its oil may damage the compressor.

I am assuming the system has not been converted to R134a
