95 series dual batteries

Morning Reinhard,
The battery on the passenger side (assuming UK model) is purely for starting whilst the battery on the drivers side is for starting and most accessories - they join together for starting using the 24volt starter.
You could re-wire the sockets to run directly off the battery, however then you run the risk of flattening the battery. If you are planning on running a lot of accessories you should consider fitting a third battery and split charge system.

Reinhard, the 95 is not so common as the 90 but Toyo do have a lot of
variants according to climate, especially on the 70/80 series. On
these for north European conditions there is 24 volt starting (look
at the spec plate on your starter motor, best seen by putting a digi
camera down beside it and looking at the picture standing up !).
So, assuming that your installation looks an obvious OEM fitment and
not an after market addition. You will see that there is a changeover
switch/relay that puts the batts in series for starting only, to give
the 24 volts, otherwise all systems are on 12 when the engine is
running or the vehicle is stationary with engine switched off. So
just check that yours is the same, it may be.
On the accessory issue, a lot of their models have an accessory
position counter to the usual rotation of the switch, and in my
experience one can remove the key. In fact on the 70/80's I come
across the key can be removed whilst the engine is running. But I use
mostly military spec vehicles which may be different to a
retail market spec. I don't know.
HTH, if not and you are now confused then someone else may be able to
help, but there are few 90's on the forum unfortunately.

Denis,
Actually my mistake, I was thinking of a '95 80 series, not a 95 series - sorry.

Well I write that the 95 was rare !
It just emphasises the need to always have a workshop manual or at
least a wiring diagram for a new vehicle. With a 4WD these things
have to be sorted and a deep knowledge acquired before going out into
the wilds and then wondering how it works after one has broken down
! But thankfully breakdowns are not so common with the TLC.
I am pleased a factual answer appeared in such a short time.
cheers

Reinhard,
For the price of a good quality deep cycle battery and to avoid the
hassle of an extensive rewiring job, you can try this:

http://www.noflatbatteries.com/
I have Priority Start on each battery. It's a clever design using a
geared micro motor providing clamping force on the contacts. It does
not disconnect and reconnect each time the vehicle is started. I got
it half price from the USA and only fitted it recently so can't
comment how good they actually are.

Reinhard,
The question also is, how long will the aux batteries last until
they are drained flat by power hungry gismos? If you use a typical
single battery, like Optima yellow top, the answer is - not a lot. A
decent fridge will run it down in a day. On the other hand, a laptop
or sat nav will not make a dent, but even less so on your dual starter
battery setup, which is twice the yellow top's capacity.
Unless you are worried you may drain your batteries while leaving the
car for days with extra power devices switched on, I would not bother.
Pls also consider that if you rewire your power sockets, internal
lights, etc, and then happen to leave the main lamps on (you would
not rewire them to run from an aux battery, would you?), you'll still
be left without juice in the starter batteries.
