Hi Peter/All
I know I am going to have to get under the car again tonight...... This ABS
thing is doing my head in. I can't stop thinking about it so will have to
get to the bottom of it. Pulled the back sensors and both were metal bodied
with plastic caps and a small metal strip across half and flush with the
cap. Cleaned them up (both covered in metal filings, oh dear) and re
installed. Nothing. Pulled fuse tested ok. Nothing doing light still on.
Will now have to test the wiring as per instructions.
I will also find a supplier/breakers yard for a spare back-up set.

Hi Julian
I was wondering about the ABS systems and I took it apart again Friday
night. There is a thin stainless steel plate that goes between the metal
bracket of the sensor and the knuckle housing. There was some grit and dirt
between the two so I pulled it off and cleaned it. Re-assembled it and
drove car and still ABS light on. Disconnected both bats and still lights
come back on. I was thinking.... I have changed the knuckle bearings and
had to increase the shim at the top of the bearing mount by a small thin
shim (can't remember the size but it was the thinnest. This gave me the
right preload. Could that small difference have meant that the sensor is
too far away from the ring to get a reading? It is a tiny amount like .025
of a mil??? And what would the implications be to remove the shim on the
sensor so moving it closer to the ring?? Not being able to pull the codes
means I am floundering!!!!!
Also here's a weird one. Stuck in traffic on M2 last night. Hot car but
temp is in normal range. Oil gauge is looking sluggish and when finally get
chance to get going will not move past 1/2 way even revving it makes little
diff so by chance turn on heater and oil pressure rises???? Huh???

Hi Simon,
The smallest shim is .1mm and this will only affect the knuckle - I am
not sure of the purpose of the shim on the ABS sensor, but it will not
be affected by the shim on the knuckle - the birfield is held in place
by the brass guide in the knuckle spindle so it is pretty well fixed in
comparison to the ABS sensor.
I don't think the spacer on the ABS sensor is actually a shim - it is
more than likely a type of gasket to prevent the sensor rusting onto
the knuckle. By all means try removing it but I doubt it will make a
difference.
Your best bet is to ask another LC owner in London with ABS if for the
price of a beer one evening you could swap your sensor with one of
theirs for a test run.

Hi Toby
Not good news as I do really have to get the car Mot'ed. Tonight I will
have another go at pulling the code from the diagnostic in the engine
compartment and see if I can get the engine light to blink. Snag is that I
have looked all over the dash and cannot see a "check Engine" light.
Anybody got an idea what it should look like???
I may try locally here in Deptford, South East London and see if I can find
a "dozy" tester.
Finished the drivers side wheel bearings and birfield re-pack. Much easier
than passenger side but have not taken the car for a test drive yet. So wait
and see.

Hi Simon,
I don't think that we have a specific one on the diesels, although it
could be the low oil level light.
Unfortunately Jon has my manual for scanning that might contain the
diagnostic info for the ABS.
Jon/Roman, can you shed any light on diagnosing the ABS from the
manuals you have?

According to the manual the ABS warning light is the one that will flash
out the diagnostic code when the correct procedure is followed. There
are about 36 pages of relevant ABS information in the manual so it can't
really be condensed into an email but if you can wait a few days Simon
I'll scan them and mail it to you. It details how to get the codes, what
they mean and how to test different parts of the system, seems quite
comprehensive.

that is fantastic but I fear time is running out for me and my car...... I
am sitting here in the office completely fed up and facing the harsh reality
of a main dealer visit and the terrible cost implications this means. If I
could get away with disguising the lack of ABS I would try but from the
postings and a small amount of research (called my local mot place and they
are well aware of missing lights tricks)I am stuffed.
