AC compressor.

Has anyone any experience of these siezing up. I have just heard the
belt screeching and the AC was not driving, turned it off and all OK.
I cannot touch it yet as it is too hot, I was out in the car when it
happened. I am sure the compressor is siezed.
Regards, Clive.

Mine is seized - exact same symptoms.
New from Toyota they are the guts of 500quid.
I wonder if you can get them re-conditioned??

Hi
Aricon compressors desperately need fluid to lubricate and cool them. When
leaks are present, fluid evaporates and compressor runs hot and seizes. New
unit needed... Resonably enough it gets very hot before disaster, after
that it will never get hot again... :)
Maintenance is needed every two years or the like, checking level of fluid
and looking for leaks before disaster happens..
If overfilled with fluid problems can occur too.. thus not an option to
overfill to make service interval longer...
Sorry to bring such news, but this is what I have collected from elsewhere,
happily not my own personal expirience..
Regards..

I don't know where you are in the country, but I use a mobile A/C bloke
down here (Devon) who is an ex-toyota mechanic and has a lot of
experience of the systems on these beasts. I would definitely recommend
him.
His name is Rob Lane, tel 01404 47903 / 07754 795853, based in Honiton.
I'd suggest giving him a call as he will give you sound advice.

Same thing happened to my dad's cruiser in August. It's still broken,
we haven't had time to look at it yet, and since my dad doesn't use his
cruiser that often, it'll probably stay that way for a while.
Please report back if you find out it's possible to recondition the
compressors.

Thanks for that Chris
Was just talking to Rob.
Rekons that theres no easy - or cheap fix. New compressors, filters &
charge up required - your looking at 7 or 800 quid.
Cheers

Oh dear, sorry about that, but at least now you know.
Next stop a scrap merchant then (or Ebay I suppose, see:
http://tinyurl.com/ymz9z4 )
I suppose the moral is: make sure whoever gasses you're a/c adds oil, or
did he give another reason?

Good e-bay link there!
I'm going scrapping!!
He didn't give a usual cause for the failure - expect a drop of oil
would do the trick

I went out today to have a poke round at this, it ssemed to be working
fine. I will get it checked out just in case.
Regards, Clive.

Hi Nial
Just happy if it was of any help - I'm too getting a lot of useful
information from this and other forums, and of course experiences and
knowledge from fellow yota riders :)
