[Admin] Landcruiser Weekend - Summer '06 - [long!]

Hi All,
I have been looking into the various options for organising a weekend
event for Landcruiser owners and I think the best option (and probably
the cheapest) would be something along the following lines:
We would aim to book a campsite in somewhere like North/Central Wales
for the weekend and then from there either have pre-organised laning
trips or trips round a nearby 4x4 off road coarse.
The focus for the weekend would be the social side of things with the
laning and/or trip to a 4x4 course being more of a side show. I would
want you to feel comfortable bringing your families along so would be
aiming to find a campsite with suitable showering facilities, etc.
The assumption is that if you have a caravan you would be able to bring
that along, otherwise it is out with the sexy new roof tent or the ?2
army surplus Bivouac from ebay!
You would have to be relatively self sufficient food wise, although we
would aim to put a guide together of local hostilleries who do good
food.
Depending on the helpfulness of the campsite owner we can look into
organising extra stuff like a hog roast or other entertainment on site.
I have looked at trying to base ourselves at an off road centre,
however it gets expensive having to add sufficient facilities for
camping.
Yes we could find a campsite near an existing off road coarse but if we
were to essentially take over the offroad coarse for a weekend things
like insurance, marshalling, medical backup, etc get expensive.
If we can't find a suitable campsite the next option would be to find a
friendly land owner with flat fields and then hire in the loos and
showering facilities - I suispect this may be a wee bit more expensive,
but would provide greater flexibility in terms of what we do on the
land.
I was initially inspired by what the Jeep club do, which is to take
over the Tong off road course for the weekend and have a few trade
stands and entertainment, etc, however it is expensive (last years
event cost ?15k for 200 odd vehicles and also a hassle to organise - I
had a long chat with the chap who organised it and he thought it took
about 2 months of his time - he is fed up with the hassle and the cost
and so is no longer going to run it).
I think that if we just organise booking the camping side of things and
then sort out putting people into groups for laning as we have done for
Salisbury Plain it should be relatively straight forward. If there was
a local off road centre that people could use we could provide
directions and possibly negotiate a discount, but it would be up to the
centre owners to sort out the marshalling, insurance, etc.
At the moment I am thinking along the lines of a weekend towards the
end of the summer holidays, close enough to school term dates not to
interfere with family holidays but also not to clash with school dates.
We could even try to go for the August Bank holiday so you get the
extra day to recover.
Rather than storming ahead and organising something I would like to get
some feedback from you lot on the following:
* I've chosen North/Central Wales on the basis that there is some great
scenery there and some pretty good lanes - do you have any other
suggestions? Hell we could even wander over to France!!
* Do you have any views on when to hold it?
* If you know the North/Central Wales area, do you know of any suitable
camp sites and/or off road centres?
* Would any of you from outside the UK be willing to come over?
Please give it some thought and then let me know what you think, either
by replying to this thread or dropping me an email directly.
So fire away!

Hi Juliana (just making up for the last time),
Sounds great as long as we are in the UK we would more than likely be there
as a family, although Wales will cost a quite a bit to get there with the

Hi Julian
I think that the idea of a weekend be it in Wales or in France sounds really
good.
The more organised it gets the more the cost and as you said the bigger the
pain for you, not on.
The idea of a camping weekend is even better because it will allow people
the freedom to bring Caravans, Tents, hire the campsite mobiles or stay
locally.
I would think also the use of a campsite with all its facilities for a cheap
price would be great, the bar, restuarant, maybe pool, rubbish collection,
electricity, water supply, showers, toilets, curfew, etc etc is much better
than a field with a toilet especially with family involved.
I think the more that people could be involved from the start the better ,of
course depending on if they can and have the time.
I also like the idea of the family aspect of things and think this is very
important in this day and age when families can be going in their seperate
directions a lot of the time.
The freedom to partisispate in or not as you choose in the organised
activities would also be good.
I think the simplier the better which means less organisation and more
freedom for all.
The more you organise the more you could be responsible for and its
important that all including you my friend have a good time.
If the campsite or land was booked, the activities that people want or dont
want found out, what could be available nearby if they want is really all
that is needed.
The more that go especially with family the higher the risk with all those
cruisers driving about.
It would be important that the drivers are kept busy in the 4x4 centres or
greenlaning, after all thats important aswell as all the other stuff.
yea go for it why not geting distracted by the family for awhile now so hope
it helps .

Ah steve think about the cost if you lived outside of the UK, sure wouldn't
it be worth that drive for you, could not be any longer than the 12 or so
hours it would take me to get there.

Fair enough, but are you going to go?

Hi Steve
I would love to go, I think it would be great and will do my best to be
there.
I think it would be good to see a big turnout of like minded people who just
love their cruisers (most of the time).

Hi Sripadmanaban,
Certainly worth considering, many years ago I used to work for an
Agricultural company based in Alton and think I know the farm.
Does he have an off road course there or is it a case of using the
local lanes?
My personal vote is still for the Wales side of things for the scenery!

Julian,
The campsite side of things is a good clean option. Your quip
about France is not so silly, they have a more relaxed attitude to
people enjoying themselves than this country and the ferry costs are
only =A319 each way.
Is brick kiln farm a pay and play, if he 'allows' camping then it
is a secondary thing and the facilities might lack because of it.
Regards, Clive.

Hi Clive
Just to keep the treads right. Where can you get the ferry for ?19 each way
and with whom, surely not for a cruiser and passengers for any time of year.
Im heading ther in April so come on tell me.
cheers

John,
=A319 was the standard fare for Norfolk line late last year on the
Dover to Dunkerke route. Good route as you can get on to the A26 North
South motorway in the same miles as going to Calais. Norfolk line do
not take coach parties or foot passengers so they are a bit quieter. I
even got my lorry back for that rate by booking it as a motor caravan,
the check in guy did not raise an eyebrow. They also only charge about
=A310 if you turn up for a different ferry, and nothing if you phone to
change the booking. Look up their web site.
Regards, Clive.

Hi Clive
No luck there its ?68 return but thanks anyway.
cheers

John,
I just tried it again and got =A319 for out of hours, it only goes
up to =A329 in the peak hours. Be sure that you are on the Norfolk line
website, not some rip off travel bookers, www.norfolkline.com.
Regards, Clive.

Hi Clive
Got ?27 for end of April each way and the same for the end of Aug maybe for
the 4x4 summer trip, still not bad as they charge the same for a car and a
cruiser that weighs a lot more. Thanks

Hi All
Just to update you, Jon Wildsmith has kindly provided the following image
showing lanes in Wales that he has explored and has marked out the grey
area as a suitable area to choose to base ourselves.

Any feedback or local contacts would be appreciated.
I'm also keen to get feedback on dates, etc.

Julian,
Hope this is not to forward.....
As a member of the J33P Adventure Club I've attended various organised trips
to Wales, mainly mid Wales. The next green laning trip is scheduled for 25 &
26 March with 29 vehicles attending. The base will be Brecon from where
groups of 5 - 6 vehicles will go off in different directions, swapping lanes
between Saturday and Sunday.
Angela Royston is the organiser and is extremely helpful and can be
contacted on [Email address removed]
With it being too cold for camping everyone will either be booked in at
B&B's or hotels. There is a very nice summer event in early July on a 2500
acre site close to Glyn-Neath. A camping site within 20 minutes drive from
the site is used as the base camp. The facilities are superb and they cater
for both tents and caravans. The site is www.showcaves.co.uk . I've driven
this site 3 times during the last 3 years and believe it's the best site
I've ever driven in the UK. It caters for all sorts of activities. There are
endless opportunities to do rock crawling up or down rocky river beds, some
so extreme it has never been driven. There are muddy areas as well, however
much less than the rocky areas. Loads of accents and descents, some quite
challenging. It takes you the best part of the Saturday and Sunday to try
and cover the whole site.
For further reference (Ok, I know people don't like checking out the
opposition sites, but as a reference I think it's worth while) take a look
at www.j33p.org and click on events (I think you can view the events when
logging on as a guest).
Cheers
