Hi,
I notice that we are getting a number of people posting html formatted
messages to the list as well as many failing to strip out unnecesary
text like copies of the messages they are replying to, virus check
messages, etc.
Please take a moment to re-read the list rules and amend your future
posts accordingly.
Many thanks.
Have a good weekend.

Hi Julian,
Why is it necessary to strip out the message that is being replied to? left
in, it lets any person reading it, other than the ones who either had asked
or were answering the question, to know the subject that is being referred
to, not always obvious from some answers that we get. I can understand
snipping when a whole string of mails get left in, but surely the previous
one is OK.
When some answers arrive with the original mail chopped up with replies
stuck in between I find it hard sometimes to follow what is going on. Grey
matter probably shrinking!

Julian did say unnecessary text COPIES of the message, suggesting
duplicates. Sorry about the caps but it is harder to express things in
plain text, I am too used to using bold, italics or colour.
I posted a new message today in HTML if anyone can response watch out, you
have to change the message to plain text.
I did set outlook up to use plain text for elco and outlook says it is still
set up but it lies (surprise surprise).

Hi Chas,
Because everybody has already seen the original message and therefore it is a
waste of bandwidth, also it makes a mess of the daily digest message.
Your mail program should be able to group messages by the subject, or provide
proper threading - when you switch to this way of viewing the messages it is
a lot easier to follow them when they have been properly trimmed.
It is passable, but in reality could have stripped out half the content of my
original message when replying, which should detract from your understanding
of the message.

Hi Malcolm,
If any of you have been using email for a decade or more might recall
that you can enhance your message by surrounding words with * to make
it *bold* or _ to make it _underlined_.
These are old styling techniques for text messages and hopefully will
still be supported my modern email programs - if not it still helps to
highlight words.

Hi Julian,
Sometimes an answer may come back long after the question was posed how long
are we supposed to hold them in our memory or Inbox? and what about
people, like me, who choose not to use digest mode?

Hi Chas,
Personally I have every single message from every mailing list I have ever
joined going back to when I joined them - so some of them go back several
years!
However, what I recommend is that you do try to keep them for as long as
possible so you doon't run into problems like that. It is pretty easy to setup
a filter or mail rule in your mail pogram to filter all ELCO messages into a
seperate folder so that they don't clog up your other work/personal messages
and make it easier for keeping an archive.
You are lucky enough not to see the mess that the others see - take a look at
http://www.landcruisers.info/lists/list_nonhtmlprobs.html for an example!

Benoit,
To save Julian the typing, you are right we don't see the html in normal
email's but in the digest mode (where emails are put together in batches)
the html is all visible. Don't worry, we all forget sometimes and we have
been reminded a few times - in your case it is quite excusable.

But why is the html message so bad to the list? No body see all those tags
stuffs in there mail programmes any more. That was only problem 10 years
earlier.

Hi Benoit,
I don=92t think you did anything wrong, the HTML makes a mess of the daily
digest and causes all the code/tags to be stored in text format which is
obviously a pain for the end user who decides to receives it daily digest
format.
Julian
Could you just send it out as a file and rename it to .html instead, I
appreciate its probably automated?
Are you using anything in particular software wise to do this or is it
bespoke?

Hi Martin,
Not really. One of the biggest problems is that none of the mail
packages seem to follow any particular standard with their HTML
formatting so it is best to strip it all out and revert to plain text.
Just using a basic mailing list function on our mail server. It does
the job OK. I guess I could spend some money and get better software
however the only thing they do better is stripping out the html.
I do however have a bespoke version on the cards.

Gulp just checked my mail settings, mine was set to html :), was mine in
html?
Ok that sounds the best solution to me, then it can be tweaked as necessary.
What you using out of interest and a bit off topic, C,C++ php ...(assuming
you are doing the work)?
Thanks
Martin.
