Please could you all try to respond to this one:
Bearing in mind the proposed changes, in future would you prefer to
access messages via email or via web forums?
[Note: If you opt for email you will also be able to access them via
the web when you want]

Re quick poll - I'm easy, happy either way, whichever you think is the
best way forward - I would prefer the option where I can still access
emails from the works server here at the college, since I'm here most of
the time. But if its the web forum option I won't be able to access the
forum for most of the time (I don't have a personal home one as yet -
added expense for me unfortunately, since there is no land phone line in
my flat).

Hi Renate,
The point with the new system is that there will only be one system -
you will be able to post and read messages on the web by default, but
if you prefer email, you will be able to have the messages sent to you
and will be able to send messages into the list (like you can now).
In other words you can keep on receiving the messages via email as you
do now, but if you want to check on a friends computer of from an
internet cafe in Marakesh, you can just log into the website!
Personally I prefer email - I can never be bothered to keep on visiting
a website to view messages every day.
Having said that, I also keep all my messages - I have an archive of
pretty well every messages I have sent and received since about '94!!

E-mail - definitely. I have the computer on all day here in work. As
everything comes in via groupwise it is easy to save/delete as required
and put the saved ones in their own folder.

Julian,
I'd like to have both: email for archiving the content on a gmail
account and forum for the ease of organising the material and for a
quick glance at what's going on.

Hi Julian
I would like to recieve the e-mails, it only takes a few minutes to scroll
through them and is a lot better than watching the TV. I am getting addicted
to this after all.
Thanks for all your hard work

Hi Renate,
Sounds like you are deleting them, not archiving them.

Hi Brendan,
OK, not 100% sure about what you are asking.
I suppose I could have a button on the web system to enable you to forward a
particular message or thread to your email account.
Obviously you will be able to reply to messages on the web via the web, but
it would be tricky replying message you have seen on the web via email
because you would need to maintain the subject line a some header info in
order to maintain the threading.
It would also be tricky to reply to messages that you have forwarded to
yourself, although could work around that.
How about the idea of being able to subscribe to a particular thread? If
you see a few messages in a new thread that is of interest, you could press
a button and then receive copies of all the emails to date in the thread and
also all future emails in that thread.
A couple of things I forgot to mention for the web version - you will be
able to get notifications via email if someone replies to a message you have
posted - the notification will basically say that a reply has been posted
and provide a link to go and view it.
You would also have an option to track a thread when you would get an email
notification every time a new message is posted to a chosen thread.
Would that do?
OK.

Hi Julian,
Sorry for the late reply but I have only just returned from Newport this
evening. Wow it is just as well that e-mail doesn't come through your
letterbox because I would be swamped what with 80scool,ELCO, personal mail
for me and her indoors I had sixty plus and have only time to scan them.
I would much prefer a WEB FORUM please, as most of this I just would not
bother with but with a web forum it would be much easier to be selective
with what you read especially if it were split into appropriate headings:
Tech, Chat, Vehicle Type etc. Sometimes the editing can cause confusion as
you can't work out who sent what originally especially when people don't put
signatures.
It is very easy for us to be critical sitting home when not involved with
all the hard work that you are obviously putting into developing the ELCO
site. If it were to remain an e-mail only site and grow exponentially then
it would just be horrendous as a lot of what passes by is mainly chat
between two individuals which could easily be done by private e-mail. If it
were just technical stuff then it may get by. I guess it depends on what
you want of it as it is your site, it could remain small and friendly (or
not so friendly) with every one knowing each other or very large, personally
I prefer a moderate or small size especially if e-mail based. I hope it
does develop to a web forum because if it gets much worse then I will
probably sign off because I don want 50+ e-mails that may or may not be of
use. Best of luck.

Hi Julian
I currently have a gmail account, which is really great for this kind
of thing. i keep my own archive of all the threads. It's really easy
to search through and really quick. So if it was up to me, everyone
would have gmail and of course get these via email! ;)
