Hi,
Just trying to finalise a date for the next Salisbury Plain trip -
ideally I need to settle on one in the next 24hrs in order to meet some
magazine deadlines so please could you respond as soon as you get this.
For the new members, we would be planning on meeting up near the Plain
at around 8.30am for breakfast, after a (more organised) registration
and briefing we would split into groups for a drive around the plain in
the morning.
We would then meet up at the Bustard Inn in the middle of the Plain for
a lunch and then after lunch you will have the option to either go out
and play again or stay chatting in the pub/check out other people's
TLCs.
We split into groups so you can decide if you want to go for really
severe mud plugging or some gentle slip sliding along some gentle muddy
tracks.
Costs for the day will be ?10 per vehicle and then ?8.00 for the lunch,
payable on the day when you check in in the morning.
I'll stick another registration form on the site to gather up names and
numbers of people coming and lunch options when we have the dates
finalised.
The provisional dates are:
Saturday 8th April :
Sunday 9th April :
Saturday 22nd April :
Sunday 23rd April :
Saturday 29th April :
Sunday 30th April :
Please could you post a quick reply stating your 1st, 2nd and 3rd
preferences and also indicate which dates you definitely can't do.
Hopefully it will be a bit warmer this time around and we will have
more time (and daylight) for chatting and checking out the other
vehicles in the car park.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Oh, forgot to mention....
If you want to see a copy of the Total Off Road article, you can veiw
it here..

Thanks to Jon W for scanning them. Reproduced with kind permission of
Total Off Road, yada, yada, yada..
I like the first photo in the article - it is where I got stuck the
year before (there was a lot more mud there then!!), but it is also a
private MOD track, NOT a PRoW.
Also the photo of the white 40 series below it is taken in the mud pit
behind the Bustard Inn, which is also NOT a PRoW - something we are
going to have to be more careful about next time around.
The April issue of 4x4 Magazine should be out in the shops in the next
few days - my local WH Smiths is still stocking last months. I do have
scans of the article, but am awaiting permission to re-publishing them
on our site - once I have this I'll stick them both up.

Likewise. Any date is fine by me.
However, I can see the benefits of the latter dates - more daylight.
Saturdays - people not rushing off to avoid the Sunday night traffic.

PS - Have you got the "Super 6" modded cruisers yet ?

Hi Julia,
Either 22nd or 23rd are fine for me, the other dates may not fit too
well, but you never know.

Hi Steve,
Thanks Stevie.
BTW, have you seen the TOR article, you get a mention. Also at the
front of the mag there is a blue 40 flooded in a puddle.

Julian,
It will have to be Sunday for me (us), any one, if at all.
I am starting to have reservations about this getting too big. I
think that we should be more important to us than some magazine
deadline, they can always do it in a later issue.
I am also of the opinion that using green lanes commercially is
the cause of a lot of lanes, especially in Wales, being over used. A
good friend of mine has just stopped doing this for this very reason.
Now that a charge is being levied there is a very fine line between
the plain and the lanes in Wales, even though the army tear about on
the plain. I was one of the supporters of you charging a few months
ago but I can see the commercial argument being brought to the fore
soon.
Regards, Clive.

Hi Clive,
I guess it comes down to what you think we should be doing with the
group. We can either keep it small like it is or invite more people to
join us and share experiences.
Personally I think we should be expanding the group. With more members
we have a greater range of experiences to share, we have a stronger
voice for doing things like doing bulk purchases, etc, etc.
With the last trip to Salisbury Plain we got about 30 new members in the
month leading up to it and have had about 20 new members in the last
couple of weeks, no doubt as a result of the follow up articles.
I agree it is a fine line. I spent about a week of my time running
around and sorting out the last trip to Salisbury Plain at a time when I
was flat out with paying work and dealing with a new family member and
several people suggested then that I should charge for it, perhaps
enough to take the wife and kids out for a meal or something to
compensate for the time I was ignoring them, hence the charge.
If anybody else thinks that I shouldn't be charging, please do chip in
here.
As for using the Green Lanes, I would only ever organise a trip to the
plain on the basis that the numbers involved won't have that much of an
impact. If smaller groups want to get together to do local lanes that
is up to them.
As you know, my ideal would be to organise an annual weekend event at a
pay and play centre that can accomodate the larger numbers. I have made
some tentative enquiries about it and hope to dedicate a bit more time
to it over the next couple of weeks.

Dear all,
I have no problems with Julian making a charge for the event.
We have to thank for the creation of this web site and for the the past and forthcoming events.
Achieving this has meant a considerable sacrifice of Julian's time and no small cost in phone and internet time.
I think that his sole tangible reward for this has been a free Toyota jacket !
Time organising things was time lost earning money to put food into the mouths of the mini Voelckers, bless all 3 of them.
I don't think that meeting up 2 or 3 times a year is a problem. Now if we get 50+ vehicles wanting to attend I can see the potential for problems and this is wher I favour a change of venue to a private site such as Tixover or the like.
Discuss please.
Gareth Jones.

Dear Julian,
Though I won't be coming, due to no suitable vehicle, I think there's
nothing wrong with your approach.
You have contacts, the ability to organise and a willingness to do it. Lots
of other people would want to turn a profit from such a thing.
I'm sure there are many here who know what it's like juggling a family, work
and finding the time to bugger off and play in the mud when there are lots
of other things begging for your attention.
Hope you have a good time.
Regards

The labourer is worthy of his hire. Definitely. I hate to think how

cost of maintaining the URL and server...

Sounds eminently sensible to me.
Regarding the day itself: sorry, but as you've probably guessed I won't
be attending.
