Air Con Charge - Helpful Hints

Morning guys
Cruiser has a new compresser and condensor fitted and is going in for a charge.
Just wondering if anyone has any helpful hints that may or may not be
specific to charging an 80 series Aircon system.
I'm going to get my man to put a pressure check on it to make sure
none of the seals are leaking.
Is there anything else I should get done when charging?
Any insight appreciated
Thanks
Niall

Niall,
Current legislation obliges engineers to test AC systems for
leaks when they charge them. A pressure test is not the best as it can
take too long, he should use a gas sniffer.

I have a local(ish) mobile bloke who does mine roughly every two years. He is an ex-Toyota mechanic and knows these beasts. My last bill, he came to my house, was =A350 for a check, test & refill (on 26/4/06).
While chatting to him he told me:
(1) Make sure they put a good vacuum on the system, and leave it there for 10 minutes or so. This gets any moisture out of the system and dries out the moisture separator as well.
(2) They should recharge the system with the right amount of gas (R134). I can't remember the quantity but I *think* it's about 0.8kg for front system only, and 1.1kg if you have a rear one too. But treat those figures with caution! The chap doing it should know.
(3) The recharge *must* also include lubricating oil, and it's wise to add fluorescent dye as well just in case it leaks.
Once filled he should run it and check for leaks using a UV light and sniffer.
In an ideal world it would be worth rechecking after about 2 weeks just in case you have any slow leaks. If you have a UV light you can do this yourself by inspecting for dye. The common places for failure are the connectors with the front "radiator", and on the pump itself, all of which have "O" ring seals in them.
If it discharged quickly last time it was filled I'd get him to replace those seals pre-emptively, but if it stayed working well for a year or more I wouldn't bother.
Hope this helps.

I know he goes at least as far north as Bristol, but London is pushing
it a bit! However if you are coming down this way maybe you could make
a date?
It takes about an hour, and he is completely mobile with all the
required kit in the back of his van, so all you really need is a safe
location.

Thanks Chris, but I think it would be more convenient to get it done locally
even though it will certainly be more expensive, but I will obviously save
on the diesel.

Many thanks for the advise.
I'm going in armed with info and a budgie ;-)

Niall,
The gas amount is 900 grams plus or minus 50, if you have not had
it done replace the drier, this will make about 2 degrees difference
to the temp. A drier is approx. =A330 from Toyota. Lubricating oil only
needs to be added if a component is replaced, with the right amount
for that component, too much is bad. The dye is second to a good
sniffer. I use an engineer from the Guildford area that also covers
London. He is also an excellent engineer, he has all of the kit, some
of it most costly. His company is called 'Aircare automotive', should
you be interested.

Good to kknow as the cost goes up by =8030 if more than 1000grams. Will
be watching his measurements closely...
The guy that supplied the compressor has confirmed that the unit is
supplied pre-lubricated. So will need to make sure that the guy
charging it dosen't add more.
Thanks - i'm keeping it country.
