Air con

Hello all
Been away for a coupe of weeks in Kefalonia... Very nice.
When I got back to my car, I fancied a quick blast of air con to clear out
the muggy air from 2 weeks in the long term car park but it didn't get very
cold. I don't use it a lot and didn't use it all in africa last year so I'm
assuming it just needs re-gassing. Anything else I should look for? It cuts
in when I hit the switch but doesn't seem to get very cold that's all.

Sounds as if enough gas has leaked away to reduce its efficiency, but not so much that the low pressure switch stops the compressor cutting in. This happens roughly every two years with mine.
Other symptoms would be little or nothing visible in the sight glass (left hand side in engine compartment) when the compressor is off, followed by the appearance of fluid with bubbles when it is on. Also a "sighing" noise from the evaporator under the dash, most noticeable if you switch the engine off just after the compressor has cut in.
If the system has got dye in it look for yellow at joints, especially those going to & from the a/c radiator.
A "service" (=3D inspection with UV light looking for leaking fluorescent dye) and regas cost me =A350 about 2 months ago. My system was sort of working, but not cooling much, and he sucked just over 0.5kg of refrigerant out.
When full it took a little under 0.95kg, and is now working beautifully. So losing less than 50% of the gas pretty much crippled its efficiency.

Thanks Christopher. Very helpful. I'll get it looked at when I can.

So

Also check that your air con radiator is clean.
I thought I cleaned mine well after the Salisbury mud, but now that it's
eventually summer I realised that it was cold on cooler days but struggled
on hot days.
So yesterday I made sure I got all the mud off, there was some mud stuck
between the radiators and it looked clean from the front but it didn=92t allow
proper airflow. I took it for a quick drive and it seems good again.

Marinus

Hi Guys
On the subject of salisbury, are there no more photos available from anyone
out there.
That mud goes everywhere.
I found some in the rear side panels, my fault I should know not to go
swimming in muddy water with the cruiser.

Alright Jeremy
Have the exact same problem! - Hopefully fixed now!
But curious as to why you didn't use it in Africa?
I'm planning a return trip next year
Cheers

Didn't use it in Africa because nothing dehydrates the body better than
aircon. Same happens in a 'plane - so when it comes to lasting in extreme
heat, the best thing is to just drink water and keep the aircon off. Other
dehydraters include coffee, alcohol and orange juice.
I use it more in winter to clear the screen quickly and occasionally to
blast cool air through the car after a day parked in the hot sun.
Where abouts you heading?

AC also uses fuel and when you get out of the vehicle you feel the heat

Just thinking of the plane thing, particularly long haul like the flight to
Toyoko I did last year, completely aircon environment at altitude where they
provide, coffee, alcohol, orange juice and fizzy drinks, water only on
request and when you get it there is 75ml in a little plastic cup.
For the first time ever we remembered to take bottled water in carry on,
made a big difference to the jetlag.

Jeremy - Brilliant - are you a maths teacher!
X=3Dbeer
Y=3Daircon
Z=3Ddehydration
So by reducing the amount of dehydration by turning off the air-con you can increase the amount of beer consumption!
The route is currently through europe, syria, jordan, israel, egypt - still researching the rest but basically down the east coast. Working remotely on a project in Israel at the moment so can wrangle a few months work/cash before the big push on south.
Would be very interested in any route info you've researched/completed.
Was in Froggs Island recently - left with a snorkle & ARB bush bar- too many toys and gadgets for overlanding to mention.
Next toy to purchase is a GPS
