What foods can diabetics not eat?
Therefore, it's important to avoid the foods listed below.
  • Sugar-Sweetened Beverages. Sugary beverages are the worst drink choice for someone with diabetes. ...
  • Trans Fats. ...
  • White Bread, Pasta and Rice. ...
  • Fruit-Flavored Yogurt. ...
  • Sweetened Breakfast Cereals. ...
  • Flavored Coffee Drinks. ...
  • Honey, Agave Nectar and Maple Syrup. ...
  • Dried Fruit.

A coincedance you should mention this JM. Been working with an old colleague of mine today who I haven’t seen for several months and he’s just been diagnosed with type 2. He’s been told to cut down on the carbs, particularly pasta, potatoes and white bread and eat more fresh veg and fruit. He had a Mediterranean salad for lunch with an orange for ‘dessert’. He’s not a big drinker and doesn’t have a particularly sweet tooth, he’s not taken sugar in coffee or tea for years.

Shock of my life when i was diagnosed, always eaten a healthy diet & lots of fruit, not overweight & do a lot of walking, never use sugar in anything

Bad news for lots of us I’m afraid, me too, I have an energetic job, go to the gym only once a week, dancing ( jive) once a week, eat an amazing Mediterranean diet, red meat only once a week, ( love fish) ah, and still overweight but I’m old, is that the key? I don’t know, who does? it’s not called the silent killer for nothing. The good news is I personally know of two people who have successfully staved it off by very energetic exercise and diet, severe diet to make a huge weight loss. I’m no doctor, and I don’t give advice, but it must be worth a closer look. I’ll clean my spectacles, Looks like I’m gonna stay fat!
Best regards to all, Bill Westley

Guys my diet has naturally changed over many years. Lastest addiction is ketogentics to where by one consumes more fat and protein and far less carbs.

This is is a good alternative to dietabetics and general populas.

The general natative is to eat organic, base your intake on alkaline foods and reduce carbs.

Just my 2 cents

I was diagnosed with type 2about 30 years ago and just take 1 metformin tablet a day.I reckon just lead a normal life, have a few drinks if it takes your fancy and forget diets just don’t overeat. The local doc was giving me stuff
That was giving me lows and you would be working by yourself on the farm
And would go into a cold sweat and get the shakes,so I had a think about it
And gave up on hismedication and just take the one tablet now.

I'd say eat what you did yesterday and last week and last year , from what i can tell from my reading even being overweight is a contributing factor they don't fully understand . Everyone is different so there can be no plan .

Every Thursday i go drinking with an 80 year ex farmer who would spend all day every day digging over his garden if the weather allowed . He eats healthy as in natural produce rather than processed rubbish because he always did , he never took sugar in his tea and maybe 5 to 10 pints a week is a sin doctors sometimes sort of say maybe he shouldn't , but only when he gets so drunk he falls over

Sure you can make changes but let them come gradually , yesterdays lifestyle didn't kill you and it won't tomorrow either , the worry will do you more harm than a beer so let the experts monitor and manage it .

My mate Yorkie takes tablets for it and through trial and error he's found instead of taking the 2 he is due before pub time they work better if he takes one sober and one drunk and if you ask him being diabetic is a nuisance and nothing more .

I take it you have been diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic Joinerman?

Im a type 1 insulin dependant diabetic. take a look at the glycemic index chart. its about eating slower release foods to stop your sugar levels spiking so high.

For me white bread rockets my sugar levels so i stick to wholemeal or granary/seeded bread.

Joe, no i am right on the borderline of having type two, apparantly if your 47 or above on some scale or other then your type two, I'm 46

Ok then you should be able to control it by swapping to some slower release foods, brown bread instead of white etc. watch out for the so called low fat yogurts that actually have more sugar than the normal yoghurts.
Tea is fine for drinks if you're not having sugar in it.

its worth a look at the Glycemic index to get an idea of your normal diet foods and see how quickly they convert, it may be a simple swap of a few items to bring your sugar levels into check.

Hi Joinerman

going On from Dervis, it can be reversed by lifestyle change. (My beau is a med student with a keen interest in sport/diet etc with a view to specialising in gastro)
I always thought that you stop producing insulin and that’s how it happens but it’s actually just insulin resistance. The same is released it just doesn’t have the effect as it’s been released so often for so long.
You could try dropping sugars/grains/carbs altogether ditch processed food and eat like monk for a while to see if it works. She makes me get blood tests for I think it’s the hba1c test you’ve taken which gives a longer look at your insulin/sugar than the simple sugar in the wee test.
Don’t despair you can get that to drop... it’s a miserable existence to begin with but you actually get used to it, the weight falls off and cholesterol too.
a few weeks ago she was excitedly describing how she got to use the “bone nibblers” to amputate some toes on a diabetic lady, that’s all the encouragement I needed, I still have the odd naughty cider but switch from beer to spirits (not in the same volumes ) intermittent fasting can help too apparently but if I miss meals I’m unsafe to be around.
Have a little read around and hope you get it sorted.
