Any thoughts on this alternator?

Looks like a pretty good price to me. However a couple of things stand out. First they have an error in the listing as it refers to a Rollco starter motor, which got me thinking that this was not actually made by Toyota (again this looks suspect as, unless I'm mistaken here, it would be Nippon Denso if genuine). So it looks like a pattern part to me. Is that a problem? Only time will tell…

Only 99.3 per cent positive feedback and WTF even some of those are negatively written.

I was hoping for thoughts on the alternator rather than the seller. I guess that seller isn't the only source of the alternator.

I got this back from ROLLCO....

Thank you for your email, all our Units are Brand New, nothing is re-manufactured or reconditioned.
Well sell our products to specialists / rebuilders & Motor Factors and Internet Companies.
We as a company do not sell to the general Public, I hope this answers your enquiry.

Has anyone any experience of a ROLLCO alternator in any vehicle?

Whats drawing me to this one is the 120 amp output as opposed to this 80 amp remanufactured one...

Any thoughts at all?

I've had one of these on my 80 for quite a while now at the moment though I have a problem with dash lights, you know, the disco effect, not LR Disco, which may be just an earth problem not necessarily connected with the alternator, but I also have a spare one in case it is the alternator. Having said all that they are a good helpful company, they changed a faulty starter motor for me with no arguments.

Yep, I know the disco effect. I got it before my trip down to The Gambia and was told it's an indication that the alternator is on the way out!! Anyway I double checked all connections, cleaned and re-earthed main cables and it disappeared for a couple of months before the trip so I forgot about it and went on the trip but the disco effect reappeared on the way back up through Morocco (that was in Nov 2014). A few days ago the alternator packed up.

I've been in touch with hestartermotoralternatorco.ltd and they wave warned me....

Please note that if you are going from an 80 to a 120 then fitment can be tricky due to the wider body of the 120A

So I suspect that their 120amp is from the 100 series. I've read here that there is a bracket available to overcome that but I can't find the thread.

Can anyone link me to that thread? If I remember correctly Chris and Jonwildsmith contributed to it.

I had that problem on fitting too, but the part that goes between the mounting brackets can be ground down slightly to make it fit, not a big problem.

I fitted a new 150 amp from a Toyota Sequoia, minor mod to the adjuster bracket and bolted straight in. I would add that going from 80 to 120 amps (50% increase) may put the (now elderly) charge cable under strain, from a safety and getting the amps through point of view it might be worth upgrading?

I appreciate that advice Dave. I've actually been watching this....

...for quite a while but the fact that it's in the USA, shipping and VAT and so on it would make it too expensive for an extra amps that I probably don't need.

Where did you buy yours?

Yep mine came from the states, it was around 2 or 3 years ago? The price quoted here from Toyota was double the cost of purchasing/importing one. I would add that IME pretty much every remanufactured alternator that has been 'upgraded' do not put out the quoted amps, of if they do they run hot and do not last. I would also point out that although I did upgrade the B+ (output lead) to something nice and heavy, the small plug on the Sequoia offering is a perfect match to my 80, no faffing around, bolt it on and plug it in. The adjust bracket slot had to be filed out a little to allow the alternator to swing closer to the block, this allowed me to use the stock twin fan belts. If I had any problems my OE unit could be bolted on in a moment, thus far the alt has performed perfectly.

In the end I went for this....

...maybe the seller didn't have 100% feedback but I talked to him via ebay messages and his responses were very, very quick which in my opinion is a good indication of how he conducts business. It arrived after three days and I fitted it today.

No problem fitting it. It is a bit fatter (being 120 amp rather than 80 amp) but went on without any modifications to the alternator. After reading on here about the adjuster bracket, I had a look on Toyodiy and saw that there are two brackets available for the 100 series depending on whether it's fitted with 80 or 120 amp alternator. Ordered the 120 amp bracket at 4pm yesterday and had it this morning. It was a perfect fit and in the end everything bolted straight up and not a grinder in sight!!

I also upgraded the cable from the alternator to the battery.

Pictures are...

1 - The adjuster bracket part number. Cost just over €9.00.
2 - New bracket sitting on top of old so difference very visible.
3 - Alternator and bracket fitted.

Only time will tell how reliable the ROLLCO alternator is but I'll report back in a few months....

Unfortunately, two weeks after fitting this ROLLCO alternator it failed.

I got it bench tested and the result was "not charging".

The ebay seller has been great in communicating with me and has agreed a full refund.

So, the advice has to be - don't trust ROLLCO alternators.

Sh*t! I hope I did not put the 'mockers' on it with the post I put up on the 18th of March'

Sorry it went this way, it is possible you just got a dud unless someone else comes back with a similar failure/same brand?

My alternator is showing signs of being on the way out. Please let me know what alternator you fitted after the ROLLCO failed? Thanks.

I got a rebuilt Denso unit from a local specialist.

Hi Brian. No that is fine. The failing one is on my '91 Cruiser which is fitted with a 60A and a circular plug!
