AT light

I have a TLC 80 1993 4.2 auto. We were traveling this past week and
were driving through Switzerland on steep passes. The AT overheating
light came on a couple of times. I stopped and when it cooled off drove
further. This also happened about 2 years ago while we were traveling
in the Pyrenees. Any suggestions. The AT fluid were filled up but I
have not yet changed it since we got the truck in 2007. We travelled
about 13,000 miles with the vehicle since we received it. Should my
first response be to replace the Auto Transmission filter and the fluid
and if so what will be the best fluid to replace it with. According the
manual they recommend Dexron II or III AFT. Would there be any
advantage to replace it with synthetic oil.

Looking forward to her from you.

Hi Willie,
I would be inclined to drain the ATF oil when you can - if it looks
like it might have bits in it then it may be worth dropping the sump
and replacing/cleaning the filter.
If you can use Dexron III oil and preferably go with syntetic, this
tends to help when the gearbox overheats, although ultimately you
should look to get an extra oil cooler fitted.
