Auto box problem

Has anyone any ideas on this. I have a 96 Prado TX with about 130K on the clock. I've had it about eight years. After I have driven 50-60 miles it drops out of top gear into third and then if you stop it will pull away in first but will stay there unless you lift off, and so on into third, but not top. Leave it overnight and it is back to normal. We've changed the oil as suggested by the local Toyota dealer, which did seem improve things slightly.
It's in good nick and I am happy to replace whatever might be necessary, but working my way therough all the possibilities - gearbox, speedo, ECU, could get a bit expensive. My local auto box specialists are stumped - it won't misbehave for them because they don't drive it far enough.

I have no idea, could it be some sort of sticky solenoid that controls the gears? Also you have got the overdrive button on the gear stick on right?

Martin, might sound odd and it's long shot, but I had something similar on mine years ago. It was a fault in the 4x4 system that meant that it thought it had gone into low ratio and subsequently limited the revs and gear changes. It was caused by a rear diff lock sensor. Now as yours is a Prado it might not have a rear locker so that would be out.

The other things that I experienced was something to so with the start up where the cold engine will not go into top until warmed through. This is very common. Now is something is telling the transmission that it's gone cold suddenly then it may know it out of top gear.
