Auto Gear Box Replacement

Guys
My A442F auto gear box has 360K KM on it, is knackered and I'm replacing it.
There's quite a selection available both second hand and reconditioned
- ranging from =A3520 to =A31,500 (delivered). NASA Mars Rover Spec boxes
are available from Australia but out of my budget range.
I'm shying away from re-conditioned as I don't believe a garage can
replace all the bits to the equivalent standard of OEM.
So have narrowed it down to 2
Second Hand 1996 A442F box with 88K miles for =A3520 - delivered - 1
month warranty
Second Hand 1998 A442F box with 42K miles for =A3800 - delivered - 12
month warranty
Both of the boxes are out of UK registered vehicles. Mine is a JAP.
Does anyone have any experience of putting a UK A442F into a Jap motor?
Is it a straight swap?
Is there any gremlins waiting for me? ie. it ain't going to fit!
What about Transfer Box - Worth doing a deal on that while I'm at it?
Existing TB has 360K KM also.....
Any hard learned experience or comments welcomed.
Thanks
Niall
1995 HDJ81 - 360K KM on chassis and AT, 140 on engine, 40 on the rest of it
(bit like the yard brush my uncle had for 60 years - just had 10
handles and 15 heads replaced on it)

Hey Niall
What's wrong with you AT, I ask because I know a lad who is also looking for
a box because his is also knackered , something to do with slipping gears
and also does not believe in recon.
I wonder is there a fault in the ATs that shows up after years or mileage.
This other lad is in Dublin
cheers

Hi John
I've lost 1st gear. Have to take off in low range, then change up when
the speed gets up.
Box tends to rev out - ie when you give it gas the revs rise - clutch
effect I call it.
OD light flashes constsntly
I've cleaned out the oil pan the magnets were coated in alot of metal filings
I've cooked it a few times in africa and generally trashed it.
I rekon its wear and tear
Has yer man gone for prices in Dublin - I was quoted 2.5K + fitting
for a recon box - robbery.
I'm looking for a man thats swapped out a box in a cruiser before to
no avail - very poor experience base in Ireland with these cruisers.
Cheers
Niall

Hi Niall and welcome back :)
my poor knowledge tells me there is something suspicious about the mileage!
Simply don't believe '96 mod gone 88

Hi Lubo
Agreed, but when dealing with a wreckers yard in another country -
what can you do... except take a punt on it....
Thanks

Morning Jon
Thanks for the info. Good point re models and stall speeds.
Someone else will be doing the swap. I can get it done for =80300 in
dublin, and in the UK I came across an AT specialist that does it for
=A3175. This same UK mob will recondition the box and converter for just
over a grand. So you're right - a recon'd box in % terms is not that
much over and above a second hand one (with unknown history).
80 series are very rare over here - can't even find a second hand box
over here, never mind someone that has worked on a 80 series before.
Yep - comes with the second hand boxes.
Thanks
Niall
