Auto gearbox and filter

Hi all
About a month back I changed the a/t gearbox oil on my truck and will do it
again soon to make sure there is as much fresh oil in there as possible. I
didn't change the filter and wonderd if this should be done. Presumably
there are gaskets and seals to replace...Any handy hints that might be
useful would be appreciated.

Jeremy,
On mine (98) there are no gaskets, you use a compound. Likewise
there is no filter, there is a cleanable mesh. When I have done mine I
have never found any muck in the mesh.
Regards, Clive.

Sorry, I meant mesh. It sort of does the job of a filter. I thought I might
check as my oil was a bit cooked when I changed it.

Why did you find it necessary to change the A/T oil? Did you notice
the gearbox behaving strange?

It hadn't been changed for quite some time and had taken us to N Africa and
back and it looked a little dark on the end of the dipstick. When it drained
out it smelt a bit cooked and was indeed very dark red. As we didn't flush
the whole box out I thought it wise to drain again and re fill and get more
of the old out. No problem in changing gear, just occasional judder when
holding on the brake and creeping forward.

HI
May I advise on a Converter check? If it disintegrates the whole box is due
for renewal, and that is truly costly...
When the auto overheats, the Converter is the primary item to take
damage.... and if the oil has shown sign of overheating (as I understand it)
it may only be a matter of short time before large bills comes up...
It may be cheaper to have it dissasembled and checked than replaced... It is
some kind of a chance to take just to go on..
The judder may be exactly the symptom of a timeout for the converter...
Just a hint... :)
I have promised myself to change my auto fluid every 30KKms. And will have
my box overhauled if signs of overheating or end of Converter life...
Reason is expiriences...
Regards..

I don't think the box has overheated but presumably the oil has a life and
probably it was past its best. The gearbox does get a hammering on a trip in
very hot conditions and I'm pretty confident that it hasn't overheated. I
have also fitted an additional a/t oil cooler in front of the rad to help
keep temperatures down. I will give the whole thing a once over and seek
advice.

Hi Jeremy
Where did you get the cooler for the AT and at what cost, also what would it
be like for Toy to fit.
cheers

Haven't got the info to hand John but will post it up on the list as soon as
I have.
Not difficult to fit but fiddly to get the pipe work sorted through all the
other stuff around.

Jeremy,
On my last trip I also noticed slight judder but only when the gearbox
was really hot. The warning light did come on twice (too much driving
on soft sand in high range). After the trip I also flushed the gearbox
(once) and the symptomps completely dissapeared. I did not notice,
however, any discolouration.

I think it can happen that the oil goes a bit red/brown, but I never had a
warning light. I just need to get it together and do the gearbox and an oil
and filter change - always hard at this time of year on the streets of
London.

John
The oil cooler I fitted is a Kenlowe one see below.

I fitted it in front of the main rad, on the right if you stand looking at
your Cruiser with the bonnet open. I'd take some pictures but I'm
embarrassed that the angle-irons I used for a bracket is a bit rusty...,

Hey Jeremy
Thanks for that info. But you can send me pics of the whole set up and dont
worry I could never slag work that i cant do myself even if it does end up
rusty, at least you can do it.
cheers
