Auto transmission qustions

Hi Peter,
API GL4 or GL5 SAE 80W-90 gear oil. If you can get a full synthetic so much
the better.
Peter please stop asking for read receipts with each e-mail as it is a PA.

I need to change the transmission oil.
Can I ask what everyone on here recommends?
How much oil is needed for a full change?
Is the filter renewable? I asked my local dealer andf the guy there said
they weren't a replaceable item.
Second, what oil is best for the transfer box, EP 80/90, or do you have any
other recommendations?
Many thanks.

Hi Peter,
My auto box has been very happy with the synthetic Difflock sell, can't
remember what it's called but I think they only stock one oil suitable
for autos. I think it's about 6 litres for a drain and refill but that
only changes about half the oil. I believe there is a method for a total
flush but I've never tried it.
I've never dropped the pan on mine but I gather there's a mesh you can
scrape and that's it? But I could be wrong on that one.
I've been putting Halfords Diff oil in my transfer. Keep meaning to try
the Difflock synthetic stuff in it.
Best Regards,
Jon.

Hi, you need to clean the filter with petrol, this is a pan type filter held on with about 10 small (8mm head) bolts (take the auto box sump off first!). Take the filter off and wash it in petrol.
EP90 (EP80/90) is perfect for the transfer box. And good old ATF for the auto box.
I think there is 7L in the auto box. If you ring you local auto factor they'll have all the info in a book somewhere.
See ya,

Pete,
The only filter for the auto box is a mesh affair in the sump, so you
would need to remove the sump to get at it.
Synthetics are recommended for the auto box, however you will need to
flush the old oil out - you can either try to track down a garage with
the kit to do a proper flush or you can do it yourself using a couple
of oil drums, some pipe and about 1.5 time the oil capacity of the box.
For more info on flushing, search the lcool archives at Birfield.com
for two bucket method.
If you want to move to synthetic, I would be inclined to do a flush,
run it for about 1000 miles and then take off the sump and clear the
filter - the synthetic oil will loosen up a lot of rubbish that has
built up.

I have done the flushing method on tractor gearboxes in the past, but not on an 80.
Your dealer is right. there is no filter to change, just the mesh one to clean.
If I get the chance later I will email over the part numbers for you.
Cheers,
Julian

Hi Peter,
As far as I can tell you should silicone sealant should be fine - I
can't find anything about a specific gasket.
What gearbox do you have? I don't recall a gasket on the
strainer/filter, although being an internal one wasn't overly fussed
about replacing it.
