Automatic Gearbox Service- Whats involved?

The Auto gearbox on my 100 series is begining to change a bit lumpy, changes
ok under hard acceleration but when tootling along the engine revs up for a
few milliseconds while the gearbox changes from 2nd to 3rd but not always.
I think I will have the gearbox serviced, any idea what that invloves. Can I
trust my local mechanic who has Autogearbox/Diesel engine experience but
very little LC experience, or is it a dealer job with specialist equipment?

If it were me I would change the fluid first and see if that improves
matters.
Mine began to be a bit lumpy 18 months or so ago, two changes of fluid (to
give a decent "flush" effect") and it's been fine ever since.

My gearbox does something similar. At 1800 rpm in 2nd it jums up and
down by +/- 200RPM - have changed the fluid - but no change.
But it's easy to drive it in such a way that it dosent happen.
I talked to mr Toyo about it - recommended a specialist auto
transmission man. But to be honest - I wouldn't trust anyone to open it
up and not make it worse. I've put 40,000 Km on it with the reving thing
and it hasen't got worse....
It is a worry with an overland trip planned for next year - last thing
you'd want to calve on the road to nowhere...
Will watch this with interest..........

Hi Anjam,
Best bet is just to start off with getting the oil flushed through - that's
properly flushed as opposed to just changed - your guy should know the
difference.
Next step would be to drop the pan and check to see if there is an crud on the
sieve, although hopefully a proper flush should shift some of that.
Beyond that the next option is to take it out, strip it down and then check all
the tollerances and replace any worn parts which is when it starts to get very
expensive.

It may be unrelated, but on my manual box machine I see something
similar. At around 1800rpm under certain conditions of load I sometimes
get a slight hesitation.
That engine speed is more or less where the turbo comes into play, and I
reckon it is due the various doo-dahs attached to the injector pump not
doing their thing to inject more fuel quite properly as the inlet
pressure rises.
How this would appear on an auto box I don't know, but it is just
possible that it is nothing to do with the auto gearbox, or maybe only
partly due to it.
And no, I don't have a cure! Sorry.

Hi Niall,
Have you checked the setting of the Throttle Position Sensor - this may
have gone out of adjustment causing erratic changes or changes at
inappropriate times.

I was going to flush mine properly but it's a bit of a fag to do so I
settled for a couple of changes.
It cured the problem.
Try it and see, there's little to lose - 1/2 hour of your time and =A310 worth
of fluid. You can always flush it / have it flushed later if there's no
effect.

Thanks guys,
I will give that a go at the weekend. Not done it before on an LC so will
have to swot up and get myself a Mr Haynes.
Any particular Fluid recommendations?

I just buy 5L cans of whatever-the-latest-spec-is from the local motor
factor; Dexron IV is it now, I forget, but anyway, nothing fancy just
ordinary auto-transmission fluid. Ask your friendly local motor factor -
mine always looks my motor up and tells me what fluid / oil I need according
to the specs.
When you drain the old fluid out you will not by any means get it all out,
probably about 1/2. Collect and measure what comes out and put the same
amount back in. Otherwise it's a pain to get the level correct.
I've just checked my notes and I actually did it three times - maybe
overkill but hey. So drain & refill - run for a week or so - drain &
refill..etc.
I noticed a big difference as soon as I did the first change, the second
improved things further and the third made little difference. 18 months now
and still running sweetly.

Struggling to find a service/repair manual for my 100 series. The only one I
can find is http://tinyurl.com/z2w6l but there is a warning on the page
stating it is for the Australian spec. It does say that it covers the
1HD-FTE, is that the best I am going to get? I would like something that
would cover the Active suspension as well, not that I would dare fiddle with
it but it would be good to understand exactly how it works.
Anyone know of any such manuals? I would be happy with electronic format on
CD.

My 80 Series Haynes is for Aussie spec but it's been OK for me.

The only other alternative is to ask your dealer for the official workshop
manuals, but you are looking at a couple of hundred quids worth if you get
all of them.

Thanks Julian, I think I will stick with the Haynes for now, even that's
probably way advanced for what I am going to be attempting for the near
future. Been pouring down with rain so haven't attempted to change the
tranny oil.
Did however get you some pics under the hood. Looks like not much on the
exhaust/turbo/air filter side but a fair bit pump side and a good 7/8 inches
between the air con rad and the front grill. Will post the pics to your
email address.
