Auxiliary heating

Hi guys out there
You know that LC 80 has a big motor and warms up slowly. Well I
wasn't aware of that before I bought it. But in Norway is cold and if
I have to drive short distances I sort of don't want just because of
that warming of the engine-have heard that it's not good idea to
drive diesel engines half warmed and then shut it down and start
again after a while-that's what I know...
It looks like I have to install Auxiliary heating and wonder which
one to get- webasto or ebersprecher?
Any one of you with good advice and some experience-how they
work, what is the consumption of diesel, how long you can have it on
before the battery gets flat etc...
Thanks in advance :)

Hi Lubomir,
I've never heard of the ebersprecher, but the Webasto seems well
thought of.
Also, whilst pondering what to do, does your 80 have a blind in front
of the radiator? If it does pull it down to cover the rad - this will
make a big difference to warm up times and shouldn't cause any
overheating problems (assuming same spec as UK models) - several of us
in the UK run with the blinds permanently shut down.

Lubo -
I had a second look and both Webasto and Eberspacher heaters are discussed in the archives.
One of our listers - Roman - has had one of these for a while and is pleased with it. He is out of the country at present.
If you get one - go for the type that both warms the engine coolant and blows hot air into the vehicle cabin. You can set a timer so that the vehicle has warmed up in the morning.
Check the makes web sites for details of heat output and current draw.

Hi all! or should I say 'Seasons Greetings!'
Yes I am still alive, just a bit busy!
Appologies Julian, I keep meaning to call you and catch-up on things.
I fitted a Webasto 'Thermotop C' about six weeks ago (4.5kw heater using
0.5litre/hour at full load). I fitted it with a timer and a 'Telestart T80'
remote which I found works anywhere from 0.5-2KM away.
In the summer it can be used to 'cool' by blowing ambient air through the
car.
It took a little time to workout the best way to fit it (engine bay and
wiring) but it is SUPERB!
Worth fitting yourself if you can as the Webasto dealers will charge around
?450 for fitting! That's just labour, EVERYTHING is inclueded in the kit.
I paid ?746 inc for the spec above from Vehvac 01732 868080.
There is an option to 'fire-up' using a mobile phone, in case you feel the
need to 'talk' to your truck when your in China! I didn't ask how much for
that!
A word of warning. The remote are a bit 'special' and cost ?105 each!! You
only get one in the kit and I have found that I only use this rather than
the in car timer. I negotiated a spare at cost in case the wife ran over the
original!
The lowest temp so far was minus five. 'Get up and make the tea, press the
remote, twenty minutes later-fully defrosted, as warm as toast and engine
temp off the cold stop at startup!
VERY well made. I have had no problems so far (2yr warranty) and it looks
factory fitted. It is one of the best mods you can make if you plan to keep
your truck long term.

Hi Dermot Allen
It seems to be very good stuff that ''webasto''. what I wonder is
when you started it up what about the battery - does it use some
electricity and if 'yes' how long before the battery gets flat? Also
I've heard that ''Ebersprecher'' is better and cheaper to repair. Hmm?
In Sweden it will cost me 21000 SEK,but I can get the VAT - hehehe.
In Norway 24000 NOK inclusive VAT!!!!!!
No wonder the Norwegians stay in queue to go to Sweden for shopping.....

Hi Lubo
My batteries are at least five years old and I have not noticed any
significant discharge even with the heater running for an hour (cold wet
dogs in the car, me in the pub!)
I don't think it is a problem unlesss your batteries are weak and or you run
the heater for many hours without driving.
I only know of the Webasto and Kenlowe (not a diesel burner) so I can't
comment on 'Ebersprecher'.

The Eberspacher heater is well known in boating circles unfortunately.
When fitted they usually put the exhaust out through what is
laughably called a silencer.
The effect is somewhat similar to a jet fighter warming up at the end
of the runway. Have one by all means but be wary of upsetting the
neighbours at 7.00 in the morning. (In the mornings I can hear no
less than three running the other side of the marina 75 yards away.)
They are also notoriously unreliable, and the less well-heeled who
may acquire one when they buy a 2nd hand boat soon seem to get rid of
them after the first repair bill. Be warned.
