For a shorty, 1983 or 1984 BJ42 LX. Power steering, aircon, 5 speed gearbox.

I agree, but compared to more modern Cruisers they are rougher than toast.

Hi Mike for me its 1976 and 1977 the 1976 is the blue FJ40 tax free and my red and white fj45 you have to love the 40s.

As Snowbound says, the LX versions are the ones fitted with more amenities but,to me, it is a personal choice. I have always preferred the round bezel so that meant a pre-80 model and if we'd wanted a hard top then the split rear doors , as per Tony's blue one, would have been my choice rather than barn doors.
There is little difference in the construction over the years so it is the combination of details that you prefer/want/like that make the 40 you want.
