Folks,

There's a big upgrade coming soon to a screen near you :)

The platform I use for this forum is now getting a bit old and lumpy and lacks in the latest and greatest features. So, to keep up with the times and bring new features I've decided to take the plunge and upgrade everything. "Why?" I hear you cry.

Some of the reasons:

  • More user friendly interface.
  • Latest features and internet standards
  • Mobile-friendly (It is a dream to use on your phone / tablet etc)
  • Much easier to upload and manage pictures.
  • A very good image gallery.
  • Faster loading times.
  • A busier community developing tools and add-ons for it.
  • A better, more advanced search function (Laz... oh Laz....)
  • Better user engagement.
  • More secure.
  • Many more under-the-covers benefits - some of which will be noticed, some will not.

The last time we changed platforms was sadly just before the announced end-of-life for the software I had just bought! They new version of their software was not included in the license so there was no room for me to move. I refused to purchase another license from them. In hindsight, this was a good thing because their new version was pretty grim and would have been a waste of money. There are also vulnerabilities in the software which keep being found and patches and updates for them are slow to come from the company.

So, after many years or playing along with this version I took the plunge last week and bought a new platform and a whole bunch of add-ons for it.

For the last week or so I've been setting it up on the side, out of the way of all the normal day-to-day goings on and it's almost ready. I thought I would add a bit of a preview so that it's not a total shock when you log on in the morning and see something a bit unexpected :)

I am still in the process of getting it all setup and working as smoothly as I can so it'll be a few days yet before you get a real glimpse of it. I am trying to make sure that all the main features are there before I cut over. I might have finished it if Tony had not dragged me out t the pub last night until silly-o'clock. Or was it me who dragged him out? Head is still fuzzy....

The interruption during cut-over should be minimal. I'll give a bit of a heads-up before I switch over. You'll see a holding page while it's happening and all being well, you'll eventually see the new forum and all it's glory. :)

Right, can't think of much more to add at this point.

Comments and suggestions on a postcard :)

Thanks CP. Appreciate the effort. It looks much prettier. Like you say, we need to make sure that popular functions aren't lost or blood will be spilled. I just want to be able to come on, see what's been posted since the last visit, have look at selected threads, wipe that history clean and leave. Then come back another time and repeat. I'm on a few forums and they don't all have the features that we do and it's infuriating.

Looking forward it seeing it

Well done Cris, it all looks very neat and tidy but none of the links on those pages you put up are working. :laughing-rolling::laughing-rolling::laughing-rolling:

looks like an improvement, cant wait to give it a run :)

You clown. Before I finished reading your sentence my brain was saying "oh ffs chas...." :laughing-rolling:

Will I see any improvement when posting from Spain Crispin? At the moment, it would be fair to say 7 from 10 posts go straight up since the 'Doctor Who' scenario we both experienced when doing some sorting, remember that? :wtf: So, we have moved forward however, if I try to edit a post, then I am lucky if 2 from 10 load without a freeze?

Dave

Crispin,
Quick question, will it still integrate with Tapatalk app?? Mud moved to something that didn't and now is nowhere near as easy to use. Cheers

Hope so Dave. It's a whole new platform and a much more modern one. Things should be a lot slicker on it.

A quick update -

As with everything you do without much planning things take longer than expected :)

I think we're mostly there with the migration. Most of the features have been moved across. I've parked a few which were not used and will get through them once the whole thing has shifted over.

We have content, all the users have been moved over, some of the posts have gone for testing etc.
Everything has been secured and encrypted so your emails, content and passwords are safe from prying eyes.

There is a small problem that I'm working on with the tech support guys which is will be a show-stopper at the end of the month so would rather get that fixed before we cut over.

I'll add more details as and when I get it.

Don't like changes.

Dunno why they had to mess with the money, nothing wrong with shillings and pence, it's never been right since, and another thing, these meters, how many feet in a meter, it just doesn't work right.

Bloody socialists.

Don't like changes.

Change is good Clive. At least, that's what the doctor at my gender reassignment clinic says.

Reassignment? That's a fancy word for getting castrated isn't it?

I don't want want to be reassigned, that's for sure

Well, that sucks piles. :(

I've lost everything I've been working on for the last week or so :(

The backup I did just before I pressed-the-now-known-as-self-destruct-button button is not looking promising either.

Well, always quicker and better the second time round they say....

Looking forward to it with dread , will it still have a scroll bar at the side of the page for people who hate touchscreen

Sorry to hear this Crispin but, you just knew it would not work straight out of the box right? :icon-cry:
