bio diesel

Hi Guys
It seems that someone over here is getting serious about the biodiesel
issue.
A firm had committed to build a plant from scratch and supple 200,000 tons
of bio very soon , within the next couple of years.
Ill be interested to see what happens as they say they will be able to
supple 5% of the diesel market, but I think it will be based in Cork so
unless they deliver and I install a big tank in the back garden I may have
to still use Tesco.
cheers

Here too, in Humberside I believe, with the aim of supplying around 5%
of the market. I think that's 100% of the market having a 5% admixture
of bio, so you may not have to travel to Cork after all!
The most recent Scientific American but one, headline "Beyond Carbon",
has some quite interesting articles on the complete life cycle energy
balance of it. According to them it comes out a little ahead of dead
dinosaurs, but not excessively so.

john,
i know a guy who is in the process of setting up a bio plant in naas.
not sure of the time scale but it will be probably within the next 12
months, ive been running on the stuff he's been making while he's been
perfecting the setup, no problems so far!
i'll keep you posted

Hi Guys
I was wondering if you could help with a few questions I have.
A Bio Diesel place will be opening up soon close to me but not close enough
to just go for a refill.
I dont know if they will deliver, I dont have a trailer and tank or anywhere
to put one even if I had, I think.
But how long is the shelf life of this stuff (ie how long can you store it)
I know it could be different here in Ireland but in the Uk can you store it
in a tank in your garden like you would the home heating oil or do you need
a permit.
Does it work out cheaper than Dino diesel.
Do you need to make any adjustments to the injector pump or anything else in
oder to use it.
Will it mess up anything in the cruiser like pipes, injector nozzels,
filters etc etc.
Is there any difference in performance or mileage.
Do you need to service anything sooner or later than normal.
Can you run from cold start on the stuff.
Can you change back to Dino diesel if you cant get a supple of the Bio
diesel without any adjustments at all.
Is there any bad press about the use of the Bio diesel at all.
Will it mess up your rings, seals etc etc.
Does your cruiser smell anything like a chipper.
Is all Bio diesel the same , (the same grade or ingredients or spec )
cheers

John,
That is a lot of questions, to which I know all of the answers.
Rather than me answer you, go to the journey to forever website and
read up on bio diesel. They have more information on that site than
anywhere.
Regards, Clive.

Hey Clive
Thanks
John

Hi John,
I suspect that this will depend on how the Biodiesel is being made and the raw
materials - best to ask the supplier.
The chap I get it from stores it in big tanks, but I can't comment on the shelf
life.
In theory it does, but again it depends on what it is being made from and the
supplier - we have suppliers near here who sell it at a premium because of it's
green credentials.
If proper biodiesel you should be fine although it is a little caustic and can
clean out crap from your fuel system so be prepared to change your fuel filter
after the first tank or two.
See above. Also it should be noted that some pre 1990 cars may have problems
with the caustic nature of the fuel rotting rubber pipes. You should be fine
with a 80 series.
I found with mine that it realy depended on the batch of fuel, but the
supplier's big problem due to the small batches he was making was consitency.
Overal car runs quieter, smoother and seems more powerful, however it does lead
to slightly lower MPGs.
Just service as normal.
yes, I had no problems with the 80 but know that some people with other
vehicles used to add some parafin or straight petrol in winter.
You can mix and match it as you like.
The key thing is the reputation of the supplier there are stories of people
trying one local supplier and having major engine problem - he is supposed to
have 'killed' at least a dozen cars!
No, should be fine.
Depends on the raw material. My supplier reprocessed cooking oils so the car
does smell a bit like a chip van, however the smell is better then normal dino
diesel.
No.
Hope that helps.

Hey Julian
Thanks for all that info .
Just what I was looking for, concise and honest.
The supplier wont be up and runnnig untill later this year if at all.
Just a thought but it all depends on how I can get the stuff if this guy
does set up, and as you say what will the quality be like.
Ill have to check this guys or companies reputation, the last thing I want
is to have more problems with the cruiser.
But nice to know its a plus for most of my questions anyway.
I think shelf life is important if I have to buy it in bulk especially if it
has to be stored for any lenght of time.
Any idea on the good or bad ingredients and what they do or dont do.
You say less MPH maybe why and by how much.
Cheers

Hi John,
No, there are various approaches - aim for at least proper 100%
biodiesel.
But it was countered by more power. I tend to run the LC with very low
fuelling, if I increase the fuelling I would get more power, but the
consumption goes down. Using biodiesel has the same effect - I guess
if I reduced the fuelling to produce the same power as I get on dino
diesel I would guess that the mpg would be about the same.
But that's the case with my 80 with 150k miles on the clock and
injectors and pump in desperate need of a service. My pet theory is
that the biodiesel is a bit thicker than the dino fuel and the pump
prefers it and can pump it better because it is old and worn - if my
pump and injectors were rebuilt or I was using a walbro I doubt there
would be any difference in power and mpg.

Hi Julian
Seeing as how you have been using the biodiesel for a whikle now have you
come across any problems with fuel filters etc.
I ask because I remember you saying that the biodiesel will actually clean
out pipes a little.
But I came across an article about problems with biodiesel and bacteria
building up in the filters and pipes.
A city in the states has suspended the use of the biodiesel in its fleet of
trucks because of breakdowns relating to the bacteria.
Is it a case that you will soon be bringing the cruiser for a trip to the
Doc for a prescription for antibiotics to be taken three times daily.
cheers

Does this also preclude vegans from using biodiesel?

Re vegans & biodiesel

Think they can still drink it - just has to carry a health warning....

Niall

Hi John,
I found that the biodiesel cleaned the crap out of my system which blocked
the fuel filter, but after a couple of tanks full it was all OK.
You can get problems with deposits building up in the fuel filter due to it
being very cold or a bad batch of fuel, but that comes down the the
supplier.
The only thing I have had to do a couple of times is drain the some water
out of the bottom.
