BP Ultimate Diesel

I'm scouring the web trying to find hard data on BP ULtimate Diesel -
anyone seen any real evidence if it's any good?
Ian.

I tried a tankful a few months ago. It was noticeably quieter & smoother, but gave exactly the same fuel economy as the supermarket stuff. Not a scientific opinion though ...

I can't say I noticed a definite difference when I tried. I thought I
did but am wary of my imagination! If it keeps the engine in better
condition then maybe it's worth it. Certainly any consumption
differences, if they existed, were so minor that they don't offset the
price. If I can't tell improved economy the power increase is going to
be just as negligible so it's all down to any benefit on engine life.

Morning All,
Just thought I would provide some initial feedback on a mistaken use of
BP Ultimate Diesel.
I actually put it in by mistake because the pump didn't have a normal
diesel spout on it, however am reasonably pleased with the results.
My LC needs work on the injectors and valves and as a result is only
doing about 300-315 miles per tank.
After filling with the BP Ultimate fuel I managed to get 360miles out
of the tank on a trip up to Newmarket and back which included some bits
at 80-90mph, around an hour in crawling traffic jams and then mixed A
and B road driving - so pretty average usage.
Whilst the increased cost was around 8% the fuel consumption improved
by around 15%.
I did tweak the fuelling a bit about a month ago, but haven't really
monitored the changes so have I have just put in a tank of Tesco's
finest for comparison. I'll let you know how I get on.

Ouch! or is it a small tank on your 80? I could drive from London to John O'
Groats (nearly 700 miles) on a tankfull of ordinary diesel and have done
that trip many times, normaly I would fill up in Inverness as the price
diffrence was quite a lot between Caithness and Inverness. Normal cruising
in mine would return about 30mpg to 33mpg and that is sitting at about 80ish
on the motorways, I had my cruiser on the weighbridge and my normal running
weight was 3.275tonnes + me and I had a largish Thule roof box on the top as
well

Interestin' Julian.
I got a tankful last summer, and couldn't see any noticeable improvement in MPG. But then my MPG varies hugely due to different usage patterns, and it would be hard to distinguish variations due to fuel from those due to usage.
Anyway they don't sell "designer diesel" to us yokels in this part of the world - I've never seen it for sale locally.

ps: I actually needed 4 wheel drive last weekend while doing some fence-judging on a very damp cross-country course for our Pony Club's Tetrathlon competition. I also had to get someone un-stuck, but couldn't be bothered to hitch up the tow rope & pushed (by hand) instead.
Advice for latter-day Walter Raleghs pushing ladies out of mud: don't push from in front of a driving wheel on a front wheel drive car - you get totally splattered by mud when they spin the wheels, and give everyone else a good laugh!

What on earth have you done to it to get that sort of economy? The best I've ever had out of mine was 31 mpg.

Whaaaaaat!!??
30 - 33 mpg - is that a 4.2 turbo? Mine just averaged about 25mpg on a
journey and I believe that's normal cruising at 60 - 70 mph. Even if
it's manual it seems too good to be true. Has it been modded in any way?

I normally stick in Sainsbury low sulphur diesel - i guess its as
'ultimate' as you get, but it does give me, on a 95 standard ltr fuel
tank about 560 miles or so, generally about 589 or near as dammit, I
don't really know whether this is average, good or not, on british
roads, but its used on motorways, in traffic, so its on the urban/rural
cycle.
I would be interested in comparing other LC user's comments about
this.

Everybody is driving me insane with these wonderful fuel consumption
figures - are they manual? - is something wrong with mine?
I get 25mpg on a journey and 20 - 22 mpg on urban.
It is a 4.2 ltr truck engine how can people get 35 mpg? I want some of that!
Ian.

35mpg? Wow I never managed to get it that high 33mpg was the best I ever got
out of the 1997 VX 4.2 turbo diesel manual. No mods, the engine was bog
standard the only mod done there was to the transfer case and the manual
centre diff switch fitted.
Normal for me was around 30mpg on the motorway cruising at around 80, on the
A roads I would get around 32mpg to 33mpg if I kept it around 50mph, just
never screamed the engine and never let it labour, always thought that the
80series was one of the worlds best kept secrets, yes it was expensive to
buy new but the running costs were quite small in comparison, once I got rid
of the terrible Dunlop Grand Trek tyres and put on Yokohama SD05 she was a
transformed vehicle with loads more grip on and off road.
One other thing tho filling up from near empty took about 105liters.

Alistair

That's a good point, I can stuff about 105 ltrs in my 95 ltr tank too,
but 33mpg @ 80????!!! that seems mighty high, even for a younger beast
than mine.

Hi Alistair and others,
No, standard tank, but I know the injectors need servicing and the valves
could do with adjusting.
I bet you have a 1HF-FT.
Usually I work on the following basis:
1HD-T 12 valve
Auto - 25-28mpg on long journey to around 22mpg around town.
1HD-FT 24 valve
Auto - 26-30mpg on long journeys and around 25mpg around town
Manual - 28-32mpg on long journeys and around 27-28mpg around town.
Basically the 24valve is more economic that the 12valve and the auto is
generally around 10-15% less efficient than the manual.

injectors and valves - this is what does it? I mean, this ups the mpg?
Is it something that I can do (well, me a c ouple of friends...)

Hi Renate,
They will only increase the mpg if you have very bad mpg ;-)
You would need to send the injectors away to get them done by a
specialists, but you should be able to swap them out and do the valves.

Hy all,
Just for information, mine does almost exactly 27 m.p.g. on a variety of
different pump diesels.
This seems to equate to about 535 miles / tankfull, (by the way, I thought
standard factory tank was 90 litres, not 95).
This figure is worked out over a distance of 5000 miles, or ten tanks of
juice.
Cruiser is a 1997 1HD FT with 106K miles and manual trans. no excess
weight, was on standard tires until very recently, and I drive it quite
hard.
As a point of interest, the old 2F in the 40 series did 14m.p.g. towing a
caravan and loaded with 3 adults and gear for a fortnight. It did exactly
the same empty (except for me, silly) and with no caravan attached. ;^)
