Brake chat ...l'beast woes

If Benoit has a handy mate he's probaly living in France...
Yeah you're a good bunch and have done bits for me before but I can't impose
on any of you, since it is unfair. And now, whilst checking (yes, checking
it myself, since a window got stuck half way up) the electric windows and
motors - shouldn't have even dreamt of looking at all four doors and
windows...because it transpired that me and a pal (who isn't a mechanic) of
mine, whislt working on the window motors found two were ceased - we managed
to disconnect one of the motors but I wasn't willing to remove the other
since it would have meant two windows would have got stuck whilst open, and
ketp closed iwth bits ofd wood..., we managed to remove the bits that secure
one window but we had to fix it so it looked secure and closed - its only
held closed supported by two wooden planks in the door...so I'm in a bit of
a predicament - its more important relatively to have l'beast looking secure
and locked (since it is not garaged) then the brakes! Its a great shame that
the MOT guys (not toyo guys) found there was this potential fault with the
brakes - the brakes had never failed yet, and this bit wasn't even looked
at, at last years MOT...so now I have a vehcile which is pretty much dead in
the water because both of the motors are ceased and since one window is
supported by wooden bits I can't drive it it case they slip and the glass
slips and shatters....
So there you have it - soon It'll get as bad as John B's problems in the
Emerald Isles...
I reckon, with best intentions the whole damn lot will take about ?600
including labour to fix, but I can't do anything (i.e drive anywhere) until
it is fixed, completely.
I'm perfectly willing to try and work things through but, as you pointed
out, I'm on my own, and now I have to save up from UB benefit for the the
foreseeable, and declare the vehicle SORN at the of September (Tax disc runs
out then), wouldn't mind, but I had the MOT done early in case there were
things that might need fixing... - but if I buy this toyo part, plus the
other work (remedial) that needs to be done, it clear out both my meagre
savings and my bank account - so I can't see an option apart from declaring
it SORN for maybe three-four months.

Well, you could ask Benoit if his handy mate is free ;o)
Sorry to have been confused on your handbrake cable/LSPV description.
I think most of us regulars would do the seals cos our labour is
free. To get a mechanic to do it at his rate then the replacement
part will no doubt be cheaper. That is if his diagnosis is correct in
the first place as Julian wonders.
Best of luck.

I do wish I did undrestand how I got in to this discussions. Yes I
live in France but my mate is ex-american woman. But what relation do
this has to brake wose? Mystery.

Benoit
It is confusing, another elco member mentioned you had a friend, I guess he
was thinking, because l'beast failed its MOT on
the Rear Brake Load Sensing Valve Linkage, as it had seized, that your
friend and me might get together and work on our cars if she were based here
in the UK.
I can see from this that its all too confusing for you, since I wasn't aware
you had a friend - I guess she is based in France too, and the mention came
about because maybe you mentioned you had a friend to the elco group
off-list as it were? I have no idea about where he got his information
about your friend from.
Basically, I usually work on my car alone or get a mechanic to do it since
I'm still a novice in relation to working on the car, but having a mechanic
means that I pay a lot for them to do their thing. In England it costs lots
to have work done on our cars, and labour costs alone add up, before
anything is actually done - all the other elco peoples have money, time and
expertise to work on their cars, but I don't, in fact I must be the only one
that is unemployed, and doesn't have the skills or the knowledge, or the
money, or the technical know-how to work on it, and I struggle all the time
with finding the money for anything that needs doing that I can't do myself.
In this case, it will be about three months before I can drive l'beast
again, thats 12 weeks of being without a vehicle, and its a long time to
wait because I use it for job interviews at places where local buses don't
actually go, because there arn't many jobs in Bristol, and my Forestry
Commission work and Wildlife Trust work - these roles are volunteer roles,
so I don't get a wage or expenses paid. I'm trying really hard to change my
career path, and need to gets loads of experience before I can realistically
apply for a paid role. I'm even prepared to relocate as far as Europe, but
this also costs lots of money, and I just don't have the means, this is all.
What this amounts to is that I don't have any mechanic contacts in Bristol
who are friends of mine who I can work with confidently, on my vehicle. I
only get ?56 a week, and out of that comes board and lodgings, food, bills,
utilities (gas and electric) and essential costs like council tax and water
rates. I try and save up when I can and that all goes on l'beast, but it
isn't enough.
So I lose out on much learning with regards to my car.
So don't get confused about things, put it out of your mind and concentrate
on the things that you need to concentrate on.
Regards
Renate

OK Renate I think I get it now, it was just some circumstance on some
threads I did not read. Oh yes I have to say my friend is my wife, oh
well yes I some times complain with some good natures, but she is my
"best mate" too as you say in English. So if your car is broken in
France we can help you some next time. I hope you have all the luck
for your reeducation ambitions. I am force to change caareers one time
and can say the bread is wide on the plate to mow, as we say.

Oh dear Benoit, I apologise for causing confusion in my banter (jolly
and humorous talk) with our old friend Renate.
I was referring to your 'garagist' - e of the surplus land rover
V8's. That is a 'mate' in terms of a good friend. Not 'mate' as in partner !
I'll go back under my stone now. (as in frog's home !)
By the way land rovers may have thicker chassis steel but it is
nothing like the quality of Toyotas and lasts about 8 years. Look in
the UK land rover magazines and you will see plenty of adverts for
galvanised replacement chassis - guess why ?

Sorry for wasting the lists bandwidth !
Most everything I wrote had already been said, but
bear with me I usually read the threads from the newer
messages down, and reply somewhat randomly.
Mind you I am often described as "special", isn't it
amazing ?
I never realized so many messages could be posted in
one day !

Methinks this is always the best arrangement - and yes, you are vey lucky.
I bet she shares your interest with offroading too!
There are not many overlanders out there who are single, especially female
ones, but this is me, unfortunately, and sometimes I do dearly miss a
companion who maybe could help me out in relation to l'beast. But the
problem I have, and I think it is a problem, is that I've spent most of my
life alone, and I've travelled extensively alone too. I'm probably much too
set in my ways to change now, anyway, even if I wanted to, and there would
be no other common ground as such, meaning I'm an archaeologist,
environmentalist and conservationist who works mostly on my own - nobody
would want to do what I do, voluntarily, but I love the freedom, but
regrettably, its a very lonesome track I drive. Its always been this way,
and I shouldn't think it would chnage now, even if it were able.

Pretty much every town in the UK has at least one Land Rover repair
expert.
How many Landcruiser specialists are there? Why?
Because you couldn't make a viable business being your local
Landcruiser repairer, your services wouldn't be needed that often....
As you say, there are at least two magazines that turn a profit
writing about JUST Land Rovers....

Benoit
Don't think many men would want to take me on...today I joined a workgroup
(all men) who gave me so very odd looks indeed - methinks something about a
woman in a man's world or something - but they soon got used to me. We're
all working on a potentially long-term environmental project; the work is
physically demanding, even for me, a hardened archaeologist, as we use a lot
of heavy tools and machinery, so I'm being trained to use them too. Its
good fun, a little dangerous, and good for getting experience. It might
even get me fit again.
Benoit, I should learn French and move to France then...
I probably don't move in the right circles - as I'm never exposed
(introduced) to any male environmental archaeologists...who happen to be
brilliant 4x4 mechanics...and who would offer me an apprenticeship for
l'beast....(I wish)

Hello then Renate you know there is no time like the pressent, non?
I know how you get some funny looks when I make my truck driver permit
there was one woman there with all us guys. Well she get some funny
look too but I take extra effort to be nice even then other guys
mostly tease her. We wind up being friends now and she has come eat
dinner with my familly too. For work she climb up trees all ropes on
her and cut down branches! Well I can tell you I would not do that so
she is more tough than me.
If you come to France you have dinner with my family and this friend too.

Benoit
Thankyou for your invite, I try and get to Europe at least twice a year. If
you can tell me where you live I will definitely come and see you and your
family! I'm supposed to be in France for a few days later this year.
Must get l'beast sorted out first.
Sounds as if the person you knew was a tree surgeon, my cousin is a tree
surgeon and he's up and down trees a lot too! It must run in the family;
we're all outdoors types my family members are, in one way or the other.
I'm the only archaeologist and environmentalist amongst them though, and I
have sometimes been lucky to work with French archaeologists,
environmentalists (got me involved working with UNRSCO World Heritage) and
conservation types.
I picked up a college course prospectus today to look for a French speaking
course (conversational French) so I can talk to them.
