[ break down again]

Hi Guys
No its not me having a breakdown although sometimes I think I could. I just
got back from a two hour wait waiting for a tow truck because the Cruiser
refused to start. The starting motor is knackered, so another job for the
auto guy on Tuesday. I have had this motor reconditioned twice so far. Any
one know of a place to buy a new motor and not Toyota please. It could be
the ring gear because it would click a lot but not engage to start the
cruiser. Im glad in a way it happened now before we go to France next
month.I have wondered where that slogan the luck of the Irish is defeniatly
not with me.

John,
Even a reconditioned starter motor should not fail so often
There are several options:
- some parts (motor) were reconditioned, (other mechanical) were not
- It was reconditioned with parts that were taken off another duff starter motor
- it was not reconditioned - the workshop only cleaned it and
pocketed the money,
I'd buy a new starter motor, send this one to a trustworthy workshop
to find out why it went wrong, have it rebuilt properly (if possible)
and keep it as a spare.
Fort buying a new (2.2kW) starter motor - check the usual outlets. .

Sounds like it might be the contacts in the solenoid not the starter ,
hope so cos they're cheap to replace.
Best Regards,
Jon.

Another long shot - how are your batteries - I had exactly the same
symptom and the main starting battery (on the RHS as you look under the
bonnet was as dead as a dodo and the main utilities battery on the left
didn't have the balls to start it on it's own.

Hi Julian and others
This morning first thing I phoned Toyota just to see the cost of a new
starter, 1056 euro not 156 euro but 1056 euro like they really must think we
own our own bans or something . So no way Jose from them. Phoned a couple of
starter guys and guess what they would have to get one in so not sure about
the cost. One guy told me he could supple one for me that was recon at 195
euro and would fit it aswell for a few more euro, that was untill I told him
I was 60 miles away from him. We got talking him asking me questions because
as he put it the starters in the cruisers really do not give trouble at all.
I told him that when I try to start the starter clicks like mad but wont
start, he said that its not the starter at all but the batteries or a
connection or connections, like you said Julian. I looked at the battery
meter on the dash and its at half same as usual before you start then it
climbs. The batteries have been in there since I dont know when, they came
with the cruiser 4 years ago. I tried to look for connections loose on the
starter but dont know where to look and can't bent over the cruiser too
much.
Are the betteries ok if the dash meter reads half.
Where are the conection/s for the starter, on top, at the side, underneath,
at the back
How can I check the batteries without any gismos.
How long should you get from the batteries in normal use.
My batteries are all faded and no numbers etc on them, is there a certain
type to get if needed.
I also checked the relays coming from the left bettery as you look in
regarding the lights and they seem fine too, the big black square one does
seem rusted a lot but not burnt.
There is a push on connector on the starter but where is it.
Thanks

I am afraid there's no escaping from getting a gizmo. =A32.99 multimeter

Hi John,
Mine currently sits around half way before I try to start - when I had the
problems I remember it was a little way below that.
One test is to turn on the lights and then try starting it - if one of the
batteries is causing a problem the lights should dim considerably.

John,
Sounds like your starter solenoid contacts. If so, you need to remove
the starter (starter and solenoid are one lump) open up the solenoid and
replace copper contacts, nice easy job and CHEAP.

Jon.

Hi Guys
I asked the auto elec guy to come down to have a look and he is of the
opinion that it is the actual solinoid that is giving the problem. He said
the starter will have to be taken apart because unlike most starters which
have the solinoid outside mine has it on the inside, he does not think it is
the contacts. He was the one that replaced the clutch and bits two years ago
and said it was a big clutch unlike the usual ones. So looks like its going
into him in the morning again on a flat bed truck. He checked the battery
with the multi meter and its fine. If it needs a new solinoid is that better
than getting a recon motor given that it should have the new clutch and bits
he replaced two years ago. Are solinoids expensive.

John,
When you say "clutch" do you refer to the bendix inside the starter motor?
BTW, a few weeks ago I took the starter off (it's a 10 minuite job
provided the small solenoid post screw has a hex head, not philips!)
and decided to give it once over. The brushes were fine, the long bolt
holding the motor cover to the body was bronken and was replaced.
Job finished, starter goes in, ignition key on, starter clicks on but
doesn't turn the engine? What's wrong?
Lots of heads scratching, still no answer. So starter goes out and on
the workbench. No visible cause inside or outside. Then a thought -
polarity! While reassembling the unit by mistake I connected the motor
wire to the wrong terminal. Both terminals look very much the same
and the thick short wire on the motor can be easily connected either
way. Doh!

Hi Roman
I do not know what the clutch is , the guy said that was the name and its
about 4 or 5 inches long judgeing by his discription of it. Sorry I dont
know whats what, but its another thing and name to remember and what it does
I haven't got a clue.

Hi Guys
Well I got my Cruiser back from the Auto Electrians and guess what you were
all right to some extent. After checking and eliminating things one by one
regarding the non starting, it turned out to be the batteries. The right
battery looking in was knackered, and the other battery was not much better.
He admitted that his first idea of it being the starter was wrong. He said
when he tested the right battery looking in it was only a little down and he
thought that because it was only a little down, he started to eliminate
other things like the starter and ended up back at the betteries. The
batteries looked like they were the original ones he said.
So It would appear that if you get a lot of clicking and the engine will not
start it may well be the batteries and not the starter at all.
He fixed the head lights main beam and again you were right it was the green
contact at fault. Again only by elimination that he ended up at this relay
because as I said when I checked it clicked and clicked well.
So It would appear that the contacts can click and be knackered so I will
get a few as spare from the breakers yard, just in case.
Thanks guys and another bit of learning, two new batteries and 260 euro
later I now have the Cruiser back on the road.
