Bull Bars & Winch Bumpers Illegal

Did you know that as from today (25/5/07) it=92s illegal EU wide to
manufacture, market, sell or fit any form of aftermarket frontal protection
device (bull bars and winch bumpers to you and me) that hasn=92t been type
approved??

It doesn=92t apply (yet?) to already fitted bars but you can no longer fit one
to your vehicle. That includes replacing one that already is fitted.

Here=92s the full text if you want to wade through it.

Better late than never. I've ordered one from Devon 4x4 and it'll be with me
Wednesday. Phew!!!
If anyone else needs one then according to every supplier I've spoken to ARB
are no longer importing them. Devon 4x4 has one more left in stock
apparently.
No-one else that I spoke to have any left in stock.

Interesting - I know that TBR and Frogs Island are both looking to
bring out there own bumpers, sliders, etc for LCs.

Also I thought that the ARB/TJM bumpers were type approved, if not I
wouldn't be surprised if they don't pull their fingers out to make sure
that they are. ISTR similar legislation is coming out in Aus.

I think the problem is (without having studied the legislation at this
stage) that to get type approval a bull bar has to be "deformable" and meet
the Encap or whatever crash test requirements although I'm not sure what
that means in reality.
AFAIK it's now illegal to manufacture market or sell any non-type approved
bull bar; there's no "cop-out" by stating it's for offroad use only, it's a
blanket ban although how workable this will be in reality I don't know. TBR
and Frogs Island both told me yesterday that they were totally unable to
sell them, even if marked purely for offroad use and that ARB are not
importing any more.
However, Eddie at Frogs did ask me to ring back next week as there may be
something in the pipeline.
Anyway, Devon 4x4 were happy to sell me one from stock yesterday so I have
mine.

A do recall a couple of years back an Aussie firm selling deformable
winch bumpers for LCs - it would be interesting to know if theirs meet
the criteria.
See: http://www.teampoly.com.au/Pages/main_products_smart.html
and

Also I wonder how the regs apply to the factory winch option with a
winch plate beind the bumper and just the fairlead sticking out, which
has it's own cover.

Alright lads (and lassies)

Re these sliders that westmidlands have for sale

They don't seem to have the wing protector attachment that connects to the front bumber - its a nice feature thjat the ARB ones have.....

In my opinion you need them as well

Hi Niall,
I haven=92t seen any ARB setups like that, sort of like the external frame the
custom 4x4=92s often have. Was going to ask if you had any links to photos
but I found one on the ARB site.
Doesn=92t look hard to add, although the ARB one doesn=92t look very heavy duty.

If not, sounds like
you can't buy the bumpers to connect them to anyway :-(
Best regards,
Jon.

These are the guys who did my CV joints, and fitted tyres at about 70%
of the price of Mr. Quik-Fit & friends.
I was very impressed by both their competence and their courtesy. They
clearly do a huge mail order business.

Hi Niall,
The ARB steps that connect to the bull bar aren't strong enough to offer any
real protection. I have seen these in use - they are a bit stronger than the
factory side steps, but nowhere near as strong as the sliders offered by
WestMid4x4, Slee etc.. They also increase the width of the car, not a
problem in the Australian outback, but a definite disadvantage over here.
I have a pair of WestMid's sliders fitted and can confirm that they are
nicely made and very strong - gave one a damn good bashing on a Welsh rock
at the weekend and it held up fine. If you wanted to add your own bit of bar
to connect the slider to your front bar, you could use the front hi-lift
jacking point as an anchor. I don't think you'd gain much though, in fact
you might well find yourself hooked up on things you could otherwise have
brushed past...
All the best,
Toby

Alright Toby

Re steps + wing protectors

When I got the ARB bumper fitted the main reason I didn't go for the "wings" was the extra width factor.

Jury's still out on the value a set of wings offer. U could be right on the nuisance factor.....

Cheers

Niallo
