Campin Trailers - Part 2

Someone asked me the price of a camping trailer, and lo-and-behold here
is one for sale.
This is almost exactly the same as mine, particularly the tent.

I know, a trailer that costs ?2k more than the towing vehicle, and it
hasn't eve got an engine, no air con, no heater, no seats.. doesn't seem
right... BUT they are damn nice, and the photos don't do them credit. If
I was doing the trip as a couple I would not be able to justify it, but
with a 5 and a 7 year old, we ( the parents) are going to need the
space, not to mention the kids. They have already booked the upstairs
bedroom.

A bit late in to the thread, just trying to catch up on messages.
Travelling with the wife and three children I have been considering the
trailer route, will certainly have to go that route if we bang out a
forth ;-)
I looked at the prebuilt ones, but they are prohibitively expensive, so
have been looking at going down the route of either building a new one
from scratch or converting an existing one.
LR owners can go down the route of converting ex-military Shankey
trailers, for LCs one of the better ones are the US 416 trailers -
which is good and robust, the right sort of size and it's pretty easy
to adapt the axles to take LC wheels.
I've got a stck of links on the subject if anyone is interested in
going down the DIY route.

If you go along this path have a look at the ex-german military
trailers, they are a bit bigger than a Sankey and look just the job. I
saw a batch on Ebay.de a few weeks ago and they started at 300 Euro's
for the cheapest, none of them looked ropey.

Expensive and out of reach to lots of us but fantastic bits of kit made in
south africa. I wouldn't suggest for a minute that you go out and buy one
but they at least give food for thought for what you might want to do with
one if you make it yourself.
There's also a whole deal with trailers when overlanding which I'm sure has
been covered - reversing, camp;ing, getting stuck in sand etc etc.

Particularly like the one with the built in bar over the wheel arch!
But I would be concerned about the beer getting shaken up on the road

I rekon for overlanding you should definetly have 2 fridges - 1 for
food, 1 for the bar.
No point in crawling over dusty trails all day in the back arse of
no-where if you can't have a beer or soda over ice at the end of it!

Good to see a man with taste...
I have just added a small in-line pump and whale water filter operated
by a foot switch to mine,
should save us the odd case of Giardia...
As you say, the Desert-wolf really are the dogs-b****cks... I only
managed to justify my second hand
one by saying - I will never stay in a hotel ever again in my life -
think of all the money saved...
If I was building, I would use the Desert wolf as a template, and the
only thing I would change
is I would build the load bin to cover the wheels, i.e. use the full
width of the trailer for the bin.
That is the only improvement I have thought of since January.
