Cautionary tale about fitting a snorkel!

Hi,
We fitted a snorkel to an 80 over the weekend and ran into an
interesting problem.
All the write ups about fitting snorkels are unified in advising you to
trust the template when you come to drill the holes.
However our template had been sitting in the boot of the 80 for a while
and had got wet!
When it came to fitting, we were lucky to have checked the template
against the actual snorkel - it turns out that the paper had expanded
when it got wet so all the holes were out.
No major harm done, but worth bearing in mind if you ever have to work
wih a paper template.....

Well.. I had kind of the same problem fitting a Safari snorkel on my 80.
I took a quick look at the bolts and drilled holes using the template..
and that didn't fit the snorkel at all (this is where i started to sweat
a bit)
But if you read the instructions you will find that the holes they tell
you to drill is quite big for the bolts.. (as I remember you are to
drill one 14mm hole and the rest 16mm, except for the big one which
they say needs to be 92mm) This will account for some of the inaccuracy
in the template..
Well.. I drilled the holes a little bigger and everything fitted nicely. :)

Yep
I fitted a safari snorkel on my 80 series it was a bit tricky fitting
the last bolts up by the door end but( hands and arms to big)but all in
all nice snug fit and very strong .The only modification I did was to
not use the plastic captive nuts on the A pillar. I drilled them out
bigger and installed steel captive nuts,
If not when out playing in the heavy stuff they would have been ripped
out. Since doing so I have rested against trees, soil banks with the
weight of the car resting on the snorkel and yes it did deform but
stayed on (thank god)
