CB Radio recommendations

Hi,
I'm looking for recommndations for CB radios.
Looking on ebay there are plenty around the place for not much money -
any particular makes and models to look specifically for.
Ideally looking for something that I can hide away from prying eyes of
some of the custom's officials in N. Africa in countries where they are
banned, but failing that am happy to settle for the time being with a
cheap 1 DIN one to put in below my stereo.
Thanks in advance.

Possible alternative option to the full blown CB
Was in convoy in Morocco 2 years ago and we used Icom handhelds radio's
for inter vehicle communication.
They come with a 12V battery charger that can be stuck to the dash with
double sided tape and left on charge continuously. Plus they can be
stashed away from officials easily.
Range was supposed to be 3KM but actual is more like 1km or less.
We found them very useful and more than adequate for keeping together
and letting each other know if it was safe to overtake etc
Cheers
Niall
SNIP I'm looking for recommndations for CB radios.

Hi Niall,
Yes, I already have a couple of PMR radios which we used in Morocco,
however had problems with them on convoy in the dunes, the combination
of using them in the vehicle and being the other side of dunes didn't
help that much.
I did have use of a hand held CB as well in Maroc and that provided
better range, however in future if travelling in a group would use a
fixed CB - the range is just that little bit better.
I however specifically need a CB now.

Julian,
Apart from the radio, make sure you get a proper aerial. I've got a
Sirio Megawatt 4000. It has the longest whip I could get and it does
work much better than the bargain basement jobbies.
The PRM466 is usually fine when used in line of sight, but that's about it.

Hi Sripad,
That would be handy with a proper base unit in the truck, but I want to get the
base unit first.

Hi Jon,
OK, will keep an eye out for one. How many channels does it support?
Interesting - I remember my CDs getting warm, when I used to use the
factory player - what problems did Ray have?

Whilst on the subject of CBs, looking around there are some with only
29 channels and then others with around 400+.
Are there any particular standards that I should be looking for to
ensure that the kit I get can be used abroad so that I can talk to
fellow travellers from other countries?

Hi Julian,
regarding the border controls - I would also recommend hand held device
or something which can be quickly dismounted.
I was using yaesu hand held device which uses 50/144/430 MHz bands (no
CB ... but 5 Watts of Power) and with a magnetic mount antenna on roof.
It performed really well and you can dismount whole setup in few minutes.
just my 2 cents ... of course on the first place you have to be
compatible with the rest of the group ...
regards,
Tomaz

Julian,
I bought one for iceland, after a bit of research. I got a
Midland 48 excel multi, this set lets you choose the country code for
major European countries and then uses the right channels for that
country. Features abound. Call Knights CB and have a chat with
Russell, he knows plenty and is so helpful. Don't be tempted to put
the aerial on the winch bumper, or anywhere halfway down the vehicle.

I believe only two brands are really professional enough : either Motorolla
or Icom.
For car-to-car communication, it is best to fix an antenna to the roof.
The easiest solution would be to buy a handheld radio with a magnetic roof
antenna, so that the setup can be dismantled easily at border crossings etc.
equipment.
In order to be able to communicate to others, it is important to be able to
program the frequencies.

Is that the same as the Sirio Hi-Power 4000 ?
http://www.thunderpole.co.uk/sirio_hi-power.htm
I've had good results with one of those.
Best regards,
Jon.

Jon

Clive made a fair point about mounting the antenna as high up as
possible. No point in getting a 2M ariel and putting it on the bumper.
There are some good gutter mountings available. Which are easily
de-mountable.
I wonder if a magnetic mounting would stay put on sustained corrugation
driving?
Cheers
Niall

Hi Niall,
regarding the magnetic mount - mine is approx CD size and it is very
robust. I did a lot of corrugations with it without any problem.

Cool...
Niall zzzzzzz.......

Hi Somers,
I know that height is important, however I thought that it was also
important to ensure that the aerial was on a large surface area.
The problem for some people is that the roof gets cluttered so mounting
there is impractical.
Does mounting on the gutter suffer from problems due to the small ground
plane?
When in Morocco I used a hand held CB for a while with the aerial
mounted in the middle of the bonnet - it didn't work that well, but I
suspect that this was due to the equipment rather than the positioning.
